CONTEXT: The internal auditory canal extends from the porous acusticus medially to the fundus laterally. At the fundus, a vertical bony plate formed by the falciform crest separates the canal from the inner ear and divides it into compartments. Owing to its role as a conduit for vital neurovascular structures, the internal acoustic meatus (IAM) is clinically important in otologic and neurosurgical procedures.
AIM AND OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the morphometry of the IAM and provide reference data for neurosurgeons and otologists.
SETTINGS AND DESIGN: This descriptive cross-sectional study was c

We report the case of a 77-year-old woman who presented to the emergency department (ED) after being unexpectedly struck in the head by an arrow while walking through a densely populated urban area in Barcelona, Spain. This highly unusual presentation in a modern city context prompted immediate multidisciplinary evaluation in the ED. Initial radiographs showed a metallic arrow tip in close proximity to the skull's cortical surfaces. Non-contrast head computed tomography (CT) and 3D reconstruction confirmed a left parietal soft tissue injury without intracranial penetration. The patient underwe…

On the skull, the best known and most frequently observed autopsy findings are the heat fractures of the skull and the burn hematoma. The macromorphological changes of the brain have been described comparatively less frequently in the primary and secondary literature. We have evaluated the fire deaths of our institute over a period of 10 years with regard to the macromorphological changes of the skull and brain and described four stages (0-III) after postmortem fireexposure. In stage 0, the scalp showed up to third-degree burns, but the skull and brain were not affected. In stage I, in which t…

Teratomas are embryonal neoplasms composed of 2 or 3 germ layers. We present the case of a female neonate who had a rare, mature, skull base teratoma that was managed surgically by fetal surgery, neurosurgery, otolaryngology, and plastic surgery. Imaging revealed an anterior skull base teratoma with extension into the nasopharynx, resulting in gross enlargement of the right nostril and sinonasal cavity. An ex utero intrapartum treatment procedure was performed to establish an airway before placental support was removed. Subsequently, neurosurgery and ENT performed endonasal resection of the te…

OBJECTIVE: Endoscopic endonasal approach has revolutionized the surgery of benign nose and paranasal sinus tumors. In this study we describe our experience with this approach for schwannomas of anterior skull base which are extremely rare, vascular tumors of this region. We also discuss the strategic management and their outcomes to enlighten the existing literature.
DESIGN: Ambispective study.
SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: A total of eight cases of anterior skull base schwannoma were included. These cases were operated between 2018 and 2023 at a tertiary institute. Institutional ethical committ…

The role of hybridization in morphological diversification is a fundamental topic in evolutionary biology. However, despite the accumulated knowledge on adult hybrid variation, how hybridization affects ontogenetic allometry is less well understood. Here, we investigated the effects of hybridization on postnatal ontogenetic allometry in the skulls of a putative hybrid population of introduced Taiwanese macaques (Macaca cyclopis) and native Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata). Genomic analyses indicated that the population consisted of individuals with varying degrees of admixture, formed by mal…

OBJECTIVES: To analyze the overall long-term outcome of surgically treated skull base and temporal bone chondrosarcomas.
METHODS: The medical records of patients with surgically treated skull base and temporal bone chondrosarcomas between 1983 and 2024 were thoroughly evaluated.
RESULTS: Out of a total of over 5000 skull base surgeries performed at our center, only 29 patients had histopathologically confirmed chondrosarcomas of the skull base and temporal bone. The mean of patients age was 45.6, and the male-to-female ratio was 1.9:1. The most common symptoms included hearing loss (58.6%), …

Congenital anomalies and defects of the skull base and calvarium encompass a broad and complex spectrum of pathologies. The clinical presentation is highly variable, and these anomalies may be discovered incidentally in asymptomatic individuals. Radiological assessment plays a pivotal role in precisely characterizing these abnormalities, facilitating the diagnostic process, and assisting in any preoperative preparation.

Growing skull fracture (GSF) is an uncommon form of head trauma among young children. In prior research, the majority of GSFs were typically classified based on pathophysiological mechanisms or the duration following injury. However, considering the varying severity of initial trauma and the disparities in the time elapsed between injury and hospital admission among patients, our objective was to devise a clinically useful classification system for GSFs among children, grounded in both clinical presentations and imaging findings, in order to guide clinical diagnosis and treatment decisions. Th…

OBJECTIVES: Modular architecture of traits in complex organisms can be important for morphological evolution at micro- and sometimes macroevolutionary scales as it may influence the tempo and direction of changes to groups of traits that are essential for particular functions, including food acquisition and processing. We tested several distinct hypotheses about craniofacial modularity in the hominine skull in relation to feeding biomechanics.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: First, we formulated hypothesized functional modules for craniofacial traits reflecting specific demands of feeding biomechanics…

The skull base is an anatomically and functionally critical area surrounded by vital structures such as the brainstem, the spinal cord, blood vessels, and cranial nerves. Due to this complexity, management of skull base tumors requires a multidisciplinary approach involving a team of specialists such as neurosurgeons, otorhinolaryngologists, radiation oncologists, endocrinologists, and medical oncologists. In the case of pediatric patients, cancer management should be performed by a team of pediatric-trained specialists. Radiation therapy may be used alone or in combination with surgery to tre…
