The application of the ICF in cognitive-communication disorders following traumatic brain injury.

The purpose of this article is to discuss the usefulness of the World Health Organization's International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) for describing cognitive-communication disorders. Prominent issues influencing our appreciation of cognitive-communication disorders are elaborated. These are issues with terminology, assessment (including the role of supporting cognitive processes), and the sociocultural context of the individual with cognitive-communication disorders following traumatic brain injury (TBI). This is followed by a demonstration of how the ICF framew

Perceptions of communication before and after a speech pathology intervention for an adult with intellectual disability.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to explore, from the perspective of key communication partners, the meaning of a communication intervention and associated changes for an adult with severe intellectual disability (ID). METHOD: The parents and key support workers of Mark, a 22-year-old man with ID and complex communication needs, were interviewed. The interviews were conducted prior to and following a speech pathology intervention and were guided by a communication inventory based on the concept of social networks. Interview transcripts were analysed qualitatively, with a focus on the sub

Investigating the Relationship between Working Memory and Grammar in Children with High-Functioning Autism.

OBJECTIVES: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by impairments in communication, social interaction, and executive functions. Individuals with High-Functioning Autism (HFA) often demonstrate average or above-average intelligence and typical language development. However, difficulties in social communication persist. Previous studies have indicated that children with HFA exhibit challenges in language, particularly in grammar and vocabulary, which may be associated with executive dysfunction, including deficits in Working Memory (WM). Therefore, the pr

Electrophysiological signatures of visual statistical learning in 3-month-old infants at familial and low risk for autism spectrum disorder.

Visual statistical learning (VSL) refers to the ability to extract associations and conditional probabilities within the visual environment. It may serve as a precursor to cognitive and social communication development. Quantifying VSL in infants at familial risk (FR) for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) provides opportunities to understand how genetic predisposition can influence early learning processes which may, in turn, lay a foundation for cognitive and social communication delays. We examined electroencephalography (EEG) signatures of VSL in 3-month-old infants, examining whether EEG corr

Maternal smoking during pregnancy and autism: using causal inference methods in a birth cohort study.

An association between maternal smoking in pregnancy and autism may be biologically plausible, but the evidence to date is inconsistent. We aimed to investigate the causal relationship between maternal smoking during pregnancy and offspring autism using conventional analysis and causal inference methods. In the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children we investigated the association of maternal smoking during pregnancy (exposure) with offspring autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or possible ASD diagnosis (n = 11,946) and high scores on four autism-related traits (outcomes) (n = 7402-9152).

Testing the construct validity of proposed criteria for DSM-5 autism spectrum disorder.

OBJECTIVE: To use confirmatory factor analysis to test the construct validity of the proposed DSM-5 symptom model of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), in comparison to alternative models, including that described in DSM-IV-TR. METHOD: Participants were 708 verbal children and young persons (mean age, 9.5 years) with mild to severe autistic difficulties. Autistic symptoms were measured using the Developmental, Dimensional and Diagnostic interview (3Di). The fit of the two-factor DSM-5 model, which has a social communication and a restricted, repetitive behavior (RRB) factor, was compared with th

A study of voice and non-voice processing in Prader-Willi syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a rare and complex neurodevelopmental disorder of genetic origin. It manifests itself in endocrine and cognitive problems, including highly pronounced hyperphagia and severe obesity. In many cases, impaired acquisition of social and communication skills leads to autism spectrum features, and individuals with this syndrome are occasionally diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) using specific scales. Given that communicational skills are largely based on vocal communication, it is important to study human voice processing in PWS. We were able to

Exploring Coping Strategies of Parents of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder in Taiwan: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) experience impairments in their social interactions, language communication, and stereotypical patterns of behavior. Parents of children with ASD experience higher levels of stress and more depression and anxiety than parents of children with other disabilities or typically developing children. Parents of children with disabilities develop coping strategies to counteract the stresses associated with raising a child with special needs. Understanding coping strategies to help counteract the stresses associated with parenting a child with A

Challenges and resources in adult life with Joubert syndrome: issues from an international classification of functioning (ICF) perspective.

BACKGROUND: Joubert Syndrome (JS) is a rare inherited neurodevelopmental disorder defined by a characteristic cerebellar and brainstem malformation (i.e. the molar tooth sign) and variable organ involvement. The aim of the present study was to describe functional limitations and disabilities in a large sample of adult patients with a diagnosis of JS. METHODS: We administered the International Classification of Functioning (ICF) checklist to thirty-six adult Italian patients with JS or their caregivers through telephone calls. RESULTS: None-to-mild impairment was documented for basic cognitiv

Safety, effectiveness, and economic evaluation of an herbal medicine, Ukgansangajinpibanha granule, in children with autism spectrum disorder: a study protocol for a prospective, multicenter, randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled, parallel-group clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by continuous impairment in communication and social interaction and by limited and repetitive behaviors, interests, or activities. Behavioral, educational, and pharmaceutical interventions have been shown to reduce behavioral disabilities, improve verbal/non-verbal communication, and help patients acquire self-reliance skills. However, there has been a lack of systematic verification and consensus regarding the treatment of the core symptoms of ASD because of its unclear etiology. Effects of Resource Sharing Networks on Community Anti-Drug Coalitions' Outcomes: A Social Network Analysis.

Substance use-related problems continue to be a national public health crisis despite years of prevention efforts. Community anti-drug coalitions are well positioned to address substance use at local levels. Coalitions often rely on their members to connect to resources they need to address community issues and plan for sustainability over time. Such capacity building occurs through voluntary cooperation among members, making it essential to understand the role network connections play. This study sought to determine whether structural characteristics of coalitions' resource sharing networks i

[Un chez-soi d'abord: a recovery-oriented approach].

The "Un chez-soi d'abord" scheme aims to provide independent housing for homeless people diagnosed with psychosis. The "tenants" are supported by a medical-social team, who come to meet them on a weekly basis to help them access and maintain their home. While psychiatric pathology is taken into account, the approach is essentially focused on recovery. The challenge is to support people in their life choices and to establish a bond of trust, while ensuring good coordination and quality partnership work with external players.

Stranger support: How former prisoners with mental illnesses navigate the public landscape of reentry.

BACKGROUND: Prisoners with mental illnesses (MI) are released from prison into environments where they are under-treated and under-supported by our criminal justice, social service, and health systems. Public space and interactions within those spaces have been shown to have positive effects in similar populations, including individuals with MI. This qualitative study explored the role different interactions play during the course of reentry. The study aimed to understand the more everyday relational dynamics that former prisoners with MI experience in public and private spaces. METHODS: Semi

Traumatic stress symptoms after the November 13th 2015 Terrorist Attacks among Young Adults: The relation to media and emotion regulation.

OBJECTIVE: A major terror attack occurred in the Paris region on 13th November 2015. This event was widely showed, described, and commented in the media. Media consumption may lead to a widespread diffusion of trauma-related symptoms following a collective trauma. These effects may depend on the type of media and emotion regulation strategies used by the media consumer. METHOD: Trauma history, traumatic symptoms, media consumption, psychological distress, and emotion regulation strategies of 451 young adults were assessed by an online survey. RESULTS: Findings reveal the joint role of social

Exploring communication and interaction skills at work among participants in individual placement and support.

BACKGROUND: Not all people with severe mental illness who attend Individual Placement and Support (IPS) gain and keep their jobs or work full time. Research has indicated a relationship between social disabilities and work performance in this group, and that support provided is often directed towards the social work environment. However, relationships between social skills performed in an authentic work setting and vocational outcomes have not been explored. OBJECTIVES: To explore relationships between social communication and interaction skills and vocational outcomes among IPS service users

Correlates of heavy drinking and alcohol related problems among men and women in drug treatment programs.

A series of analyses were conducted to explore if there were significant differences in heavy drinking and alcohol-related problems in clients admitted to different types of drug treatment programs and whether such differences, if found, could be attributed to variation in social characteristics, drug use behavior, drinking norms, drinking contexts, or in reasons for combining alcohol and drug use. Men and women (N = 246) in four types of publicly funded treatment programs were interviewed at intake regarding drinking and drug use patterns and related problems. The results of the study showed

Changes in communication apprehension, satisfaction, and competence in foreign dialect and stuttering clients.

This study examined changes in predispositions toward communication over the course of therapy. Results indicated that both foreign dialect and stuttering clients had significantly lower levels of communication apprehension and higher levels of communication competence after 3 1/2 months of their respective therapies; each client group also demonstrated significant improvements in the speech parameters upon which treatment focused. Discussion focused on the utility of using communication measures with clinical populations.

The UCLA High-Risk Project.

The UCLA High Risk Project studied a cohort of 64 families over a 15-year followup period. At entry to the study, the families each contained one adolescent who was having behavioral difficulties for whom help was sought from a psychological clinic. Two criteria of the degree of risk for schizophrenia were devised initially, one based on the form of the adolescent's problem and the other on the parental attributes of communication deviance (CD), affective style (AS), and expressed emotion (EE). It was hypothesized that schizophrenia would be the likely outcome when certain patterns of adolesce
