Finding benefit in stressful uncertain circumstances: relations to social support and stigma among women with unexplained illnesses.

Living with a chronic illness can be challenging, but the ability to derive benefits and grow from this experience may enhance well-being. However, the possibility of obtaining such benefits may be dependent on the levels of stigmatization and lack of social support experienced by an individual as a result of the illness. Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) and fibromyalgia are chronic conditions that remain largely unexplained and those with these conditions must often contend with stigma and skepticism from others. Individuals with CFS/fibromyalgia often display stress-related biological alterati…

Childhood Exposure to Family Violence and Adult Trauma Symptoms: The Importance of Social Support from a Spouse.

This study examines the roles of both positive and negative social support from a spouse as potential moderators of associations between experiences of physical abuse and exposure to intimate partner violence (IPV) as a child and adult trauma symptoms. We hypothesized that positive social support received from a spouse would have a buffering effect on trauma symptoms, while negative social support from a spouse would have a potentiating effect. Participants were 193 newlywed couples (total N = 386) randomly recruited from a marriage license database. Participants completed self-report question…

Health-related quality of life and social support among women treated for abortion complications in western Uganda.

BACKGROUND: While the impact of abortion complications on clinical outcomes and healthcare costs has been reported, we found no reports of their impact on Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL), nor the role of social support in moderating such outcomes. In this study, we performed an assessment of the relationship between abortion complications, HRQoL and social support among women in Uganda. METHODS: We interviewed women who were discharged after treatment for abortion complications and, as a comparison, women visiting a regional referral hospital for routine obstetric care. We administered…

Social support and self-efficacy in patients with Myasthenia Gravis: a common pathway towards positive health outcomes.

Social support and self-efficacy, that was defined as one's belief in one's capabilities to enact a certain behaviour, have a mediating effect on health outcomes and, by facilitating healthy behaviours and compliance to treatment, reduce morbidity and mortality. This pilot study aims to test whether social support and self-efficacy have a positive effect in improving health outcomes of patients with Myasthenia Gravis. 74 patients (mean age 48.1; 67.6% female) were enrolled and reported low self-efficacy and health status, but good perceived social support. Men reported better self-efficacy tha…

Changing spousal roles and their effect on recovery in gamblers anonymous: GamAnon, social support, wives and husbands.

This paper examines changing spousal roles and their effects upon recovery in Gamblers Anonymous (GA). It is based upon a qualitative study designed to gage uniformity as well as variations in approaches to recovery in GA. Interviews were conducted with 39 GA members (26 men, 13 women; mean age 56.5 years). Though the study was based in the Toronto area, only 13 interviews involved participants from that region. Phone interviews were conducted with GA members from various regions of both Canada and the US. GamAnon, GA's sister fellowship, has been designed for anyone affected seriously by some

Gender differences in the relation between social support, problems in parent-offspring communication, and depression and anxiety.

Gender differences in the buffer-effect of social support in the relation between stressful circumstances and the development of depression and anxiety disorders are widely assumed, but few studies address this three-way interaction between gender, stress, and support. Data in the present study came from the baseline assessment of the Adolescents at Risk for Anxiety and Depression (ARIADNE) study in 502 adolescent and young-adult children of 356 parents in the Netherlands with a depression, panic disorder and/or obsessive-compulsive disorder. Results indicate that the daughters benefit more fr…

Perceived social support among depressed elderly, middle-aged, and young-adult samples: cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses.

BACKGROUND: A number of studies have concluded that the perceived quality of support is more strongly associated with mental health than with the actual structure of personal networks. This study examined clinical, historical, and phenomenological variables associated cross-sectionally and longitudinally with perceived social support. METHODS: Participants included elderly, middle-aged, and young-adult depressed samples derived from the Duke Clinical Research Center for the Study of Depression in Late Life. RESULTS: Cross-sectional multivariate analyses revealed that perceived social support…

Perceived social support mediates between prior attachment and subsequent adjustment: a study of urban African American children.

The processes whereby attachment and other social and cognitive factors contribute to social and emotional adjustment were examined. Participants were 56 African American children from low-income urban families. Attachment and sociability were assessed in the strange situation when children were 4.5 years old. Two years later, children were interviewed regarding their perceptions of social support and their attributions about others' intentions. Also assessed at Time 2 were child verbal intelligence, defensive response style, children's self-reports, and parent reports of child adjustment. As …

Higher levels of social support predict greater survival following acute myocardial infarction: the Corpus Christi Heart Project.

Although low levels of social support have been related to mortality from coronary heart disease, little is known about the role of social support among Mexican Americans. The authors therefore examined the relationship between social support and long-term survival in the Corpus Christi Heart Project. They developed a social support scale that used data collected during in-hospital interviews of 292 Mexican Americans and 304 non-Hispanic Whites who survived a myocardial infarction for more than 28 days. The scale incorporated three measures: marital status; if not married, whether living alone…

Evaluation of family health education to build social support for long-term control of high blood pressure.

Sustaining patient motivation for long-term adherence to drug therapies remains a substantial problem for physicians, other health care providers, the patients themselves, and their families. Other therapeutic requests such as dietary changes and weight control may be even more difficult to maintain than taking pills. As part of a controlled experimental design implemented in an outpatient teaching hospital, an educational program was implemented to improve family member support for medical compliance among hypertensive patients. Family members were interviewed, counseled, and provided with a

The impact of social support on medication adherence among patients with heart failure: health literacy as a mediator.

Social support is necessary for patients with heart failure (HF) to take medication, which can lead to decreased hospitalization and mortality rates. However, the effect of patient health literacy on this relationship remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the mediating effect of health literacy on the relationship between social support and medication adherence among patients with HF. A cross-sectional correlational design was used between August and October 2024 for 249 patients with HF. Data were collected using patients' sociodemographic and health status, the Arabic version of the …

Navigating Renal Dietary Guidelines in ESKD and Obesity: A Qualitative Phenomenological Analysis of the Role of Social Support.

BACKGROUND: Adherence to renal dietary guidelines, which includes monitoring dietary intake of sodium, potassium, phosphorus and fluids, and consuming sufficient protein and fiber, may prevent hospitalizations and mortality in kidney failure. Forty percent of individuals with ESKD are estimated to have obesity (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2) and may be advised to lose weight for kidney transplantation eligibility. Although social support influences chronic disease management, mechanisms linking social support and renal diet adherence in ESKD and obesity remain unclear. METHODS: We conducted an interpretive …
