Novel hybrid rigid-deformable fetal modeling for simulating the vaginal delivery within the second stage of labor.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The fetal representation as a 3D articulated body plays an essential role to describe a realistic vaginal delivery simulation. However, the current computational solutions have been oversimplified. The objective of the present work was to develop and evaluate a novel hybrid rigid-deformable modeling approach for the fetal body and then simulate its interaction with surrounding fetal soft tissues and with other maternal pelvis soft tissues during the second stage of labor. METHODS: CT scan data was used for 3D fetal skeleton reconstruction. Then, a novel hybrid rigid-

Beverage Consumption and Ulcerative Colitis: A Case-Control Study from Saudi Arabia.

BACKGROUND: The association between beverage intake and ulcerative colitis (UC) is not well-established, with no available data from Arab countries. Herein, we investigated the potential association of consuming coffee, tea, and carbonated soft drinks with UC among a population from Saudi Arabia. METHODS: This hospital-based case-control study used data of 171 newly diagnosed UC patients and 400 patients with other gastrointestinal conditions who served as controls. All UC cases were ascertained by endoscopy, while beverage intake was assessed by a questionnaire that was completed before diag

Temporal Bone Cholesteatoma: Typical Findings and Evaluation of Diagnostic Utility on High Resolution Computed Tomography.

Background Pre-operative assessment of middle ear cholesteatoma is a must for assessing the disease's location, extent, and complication, and high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) is the modality of choice. Therefore, this study aims to assess the common signs of cholesteatoma on HRCT and its diagnostic ability.  Methods Fifty patients with suspected cholesteatoma were considered for the study, which was carried out on an Ingenuity Core 128 slice CT scanner (Philips, Amsterdam, Netherlands). The bilateral temporal bones of 50 patients were assessed for soft tissue density and associated f

Osteochondral fracture of the patella without soft tissue injury and with no dislocation: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Osteochondral fracture of the patella is a fairly common pathology, but almost always associated with a spectrum of soft tissue injuries including anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture. We present a rare case of an osteochondral fracture of the patella in the absence of ligament or soft tissue injuries and with no dislocation of the patella in a pediatric patient. PRESENTATION OF CASE: An 11-year-old male presented to the orthopedic clinic on crutches following a football injury. The patient had pain in his left knee with flexion deformity. Plain film radiography of the left

Dental trauma on primary teeth at different root resorption stages-A dynamic finite element impact analysis of the effect on the permanent tooth germ.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Dental trauma is a common emergency in children with primary teeth. The aim of this study was to determine stress propagation to the permanent tooth germ and surrounding bone and soft tissues during dental trauma to primary central incisors with three levels of physiological root resorption. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Stresses were determined using finite element analysis (FEA). Cross-sectional models were created using cone-beam computed tomography images of 3.5, 5, and 6 years olds, representing three different physiological root resorption stages of a maxillary primary central i

[The efficacy of using cephalometrics to predict difficult intubation of patients with obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome].

PURPOSE: To investigate the difference of radiological measurements between difficult-to-intubate obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome(OSAHS) patients and easily-to-intubate ones, and explore the feasibility of cephalometry in predicting difficult intubation. METHODS: Thirty male OSAS patients who received general anesthesia underwent cephalometrics before operation. Mallampati grade was used to evaluate the intubating condition of all patients before endotracheal intubation. After awake intubation and general anaesthesia, Cormack and Lehane laryngoscope grade was used to confirm the dif

Anatomic predictors of response and mechanism of action of upper airway stimulation therapy in patients with obstructive sleep apnea.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Upper airway stimulation has been shown to be an effective treatment for some patients with obstructive sleep apnea. However, the mechanism by which hypoglossal nerve stimulation increases upper airway caliber is not clear. Therefore, the objective of this study was to identify the mechanism of action of upper airway stimulation. We hypothesized that, with upper airway stimulation, responders would show greater airway opening in the retroglossal (base of the tongue) region, greater hyoid movement toward the mandible, and greater anterior motion in the posterior, inferior regi

Total Face, Eyelids, Ears, Scalp, and Skeletal Subunit Transplant Cadaver Simulation: The Culmination of Aesthetic, Craniofacial, and Microsurgery Principles.

BACKGROUND: The application of aesthetic, craniofacial, and microsurgical principles in the execution of face transplantation may improve outcomes. Optimal soft-tissue face transplantation can be achieved by incorporating subunit facial skeletal replacement and subsequent tissue resuspension. The purpose of this study was to establish a reconstructive solution for a full face and scalp burn and to evaluate outcome precision and consistency. METHODS: Seven mock face transplants (14 cadavers) were completed in the span of 1 year. Components of the vascularized composite allograft included the e

Improving the Evaluation of Alveolar Bone Grafts With Cone Beam Computerized Tomography.

OBJECTIVE: Cone Beam computed tomography (CBCT) is used increasingly as a replacement for periapical x-rays when evaluating alveolar bone grafting. The manufacturer's standard settings for dental imaging may not, however, represent the optimal settings for evaluating postoperative alveolar bone grafts. We examined the influence of exposure parameters on CBCT image quality to optimize the quality of CBCT images while reducing the radiation dose to the minimum level necessary to obtain adequate images. METHODS: A defect was created in a cadaver head to simulate an alveolar cleft, and the area w

Chondroblastoma-like chondroma of soft tissue: report of the first case in the base of skull.

Chondroblastoma-like chondroma (CLC) of soft tissue is a rare benign neoplasm that usually involves the soft tissues of the hand. This report describes the first case of CLC of soft tissue arising in the base of the skull. A 33-year-old man was seen with a slow growing mass in the right parotid region of his face. The noncontrast computed tomographic scans showed an 8.5-cm mass with calcifications involving the right masticator space and extending through the bone into the middle cranial fossa. The radiologic differential diagnosis included osteosarcoma, leiomyosarcoma, chondrosarcoma, and gia

Morphometry of the orbital region soft tissues in Down syndrome.

The orbital region of subjects with Down syndrome (DS) has been scanty described so far. We wanted to detail the morphologic characteristics of the soft tissue orbital region in Italian and North Sudanese subjects with DS. The three-dimensional coordinates of 10 landmarks on the orbital soft tissues were obtained using computerized anthropometry in 53 Italian and 64 North Sudanese subjects with DS aged 4 to 52 years, and in 461 (Italian) and 682 (North Sudanese) sex- and age-matched controls. From the landmarks, linear distances, ratios, areas, and angles were calculated, z scores computed, an

Surgical management of cervical soft disc herniation. A comparison between the anterior and posterior approach.

Anterior cervical fusion was initially described in the 1950s for cervical spondylotic radiculopathy. The indications for this procedure in the management of soft disc herniation have not been clearly defined. In addition, controversy exists as to whether a cervical soft herniation should be managed by an anterior approach or a posterior cervical laminotomy-foraminotomy. The authors report the results of a prospective study comparing anterior discectomy and fusion to posterior laminotomy-foraminotomy for the management of soft cervical disc herniation. Twenty-eight patients underwent anterior

Assessing Free Flap Reconstruction Accuracy of the Midface and Orbit Using Computer-Aided Modeling Software.

Importance: Aesthetically pleasing and functionally stable total maxillectomy reconstruction is among the greatest of challenges within head and neck surgery. Maintaining presurgical midface projection, contour, and cheek volume requires high-fidelity restorative control incorporating the provision of stable osseous support to prevent the relatively commonplace complications of lower lid and globe malposition. Objective: To determine the difference in position of the reconstructed infraorbital rim compared with the contralateral normal side, and its effect on globe position, lower eyelid posit

Radiologic predictors of in-hospital mortality after traumatic craniocervical dissociation.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic craniocervical dissociation (CCD) is the forcible dislocation of the skull from the vertebral column. Because most CCD patients die on scene, prognostication for those who arrive alive to hospital is challenging. The study objective was to determine if greater dissociation, based on radiologic measurements of CCD, is predictive of in-hospital mortality among patients surviving to the emergency department. METHODS: All trauma patients arriving to our Level 1 trauma center (January 2008 to April 2019) with CCD were retrospectively identified and included. Transfers and pat

Clinical, radiological, and audiological relationships in hemifacial microsomia.

Hemifacial microsomia is a craniofacial disorder involving structures derived from the first and second brachial arches. Bony structures, soft tissue, and the facial nerve can all be hypoplastic or absent. In this retrospective study of 70 patients at the Children's Hospital Los Angeles, craniofacial dysmorphology, temporal bone computed tomography, and audiological evaluations were examined. The purpose of this study was to identify further relationships between clinical findings, temporal bone anatomy, and audiological findings in these patients. Significant relationships were identified bet

Adenocarcinoma of the gastroesophageal junction: barium and CT examination.

Seventy-seven patients with adenocarcinoma of the gastroesophageal junction were evaluated with upper gastrointestinal barium studies (single-contrast, 40: double-contrast, 37) and 21 of these had preoperative computed tomography for staging. Single- and double-contrast studies were equally sensitive in detecting exophytic tumors, but double-contrast studies were slightly more sensitive (25 of 26) than single-contrast examinations (21 of 25) in detecting infiltrating tumors. Computed tomography accurately staged 18 (86%) of 21 cases (16 unresectable, two resectable). The most reliable computed

A rare case of intramuscular granular cell tumor in the right thigh: case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Granular cell tumor (GCT) is a rare soft tissue neoplasm, and granular cell tumor of the extremity (GCT-E) is even rarer. Routine laboratory examinations yield no specific findings in GCT-E, making multimodal imaging potentially valuable for preoperative diagnosis and treatment decision-making. This study aimed to analyze the clinical, imaging and pathological characteristics of GCT-E in the vastus medialis muscle, and to explore the clinical guiding value of multimodal imaging in its diagnosis and surgical treatment.
