Painful crisis and dense echinocytes: effects of hydration and vasodilators.

We have conducted a series of studies using discontinuous arabinogalactan density gradient ultracentrifugation of erythrocytes from the peripheral blood of: patients with sickle cell anemia (SCA), in and out of pain crisis; hydrated SCA, hemoglobin SC, and normal individuals all of whom were pain-free; and patients with SCA given short courses of oral vasodilator compounds. Our results indicate that in pain crisis patients develop an echinocytic change that is most prominent in the denser layers (specific gravity greater than 1.128 g/ml) of the discontinuous gradient and effects both irreversi…

Gait-Based Machine Learning Model for Detecting Prevalent Mild Cognitive Impairment in Older Chinese Adults: A Community-Based Cross-Sectional Study.

INTRODUCTION: Detection of prevalent mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is difficult. We tested whether adding gait features to clinical variables improved prevalent MCI classification among older adults. METHODS: This pooled cross-sectional analysis included 266 older adults. A Kinect sensor was used to capture skeletal trajectories, from which spatiotemporal, variability, asymmetry, center-of-gravity stability, and kinematic range-of-motion features were computed. MCI was assessed by Petersen's criteria. Machine learning algorithms, trained using three predictor sets (clinical-only, gait-only,

Hydrophobic cellulose nanofiber aerogel assembled via Pickering emulsion templating for high flux oil/water separation.

The growing discharge of oily wastewater creates an urgent need for efficient, sustainable absorbents capable of high-flux oil-water separation. This study presents a straightforward Pickering emulsion-templating strategy in which a single modifier, vinyltrimethoxysilane (VTMO), serves simultaneously as the sole emulsifier and the cross-linker for cellulose nanofiber (CNF) aerogels, eliminating the need for any surfactant or additional cross-linking agent. Specifically, hydrolyzed VTMO condensed with surface hydroxyl groups of CNF to form covalent Si-O-C bonds, while the self-condensation of s

Analysis of respiratory-induced motion trajectories of individual liver segments in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma.

PURPOSE: To analyze the respiratory-induced motion trajectories of each liver segment for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) to derive a more accurate internal margin and optimize treatment protocol selection. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ten-phase-gated four-dimensional computed tomography (4DCT) scans of 14 patients with HCC were analyzed. For each patient, eight representative regions of interest (ROI) were delineated on each liver segment in all 10 phases. The coordinates of the center of gravity of each ROI were obtained for each phase, and then the respiratory motion in the left-right (LR), anter

Human-like acceleration and deceleration control of a robot astronaut floating in a space station.

The acceleration and deceleration (AD) motions are the basic motion modes of robot astronauts moving in a space station. Controlling the locomotion of the robot astronaut is very challenging due to the strong nonlinearity of its complex multi-body dynamics in a gravity-free environment. However, after training, humans can move well in space stations by pushing the bulkhead, and the motion mechanism of humans is a good reference for robot astronauts. The contribution of this study is modeling the human AD motion in a microgravity environment and proposing a human-like control method for robot a

Limb Skin Temperature as a Tool to Predict Orthostatic Instability.

Orthostatic instability is one of the main consequences of weightlessness or gravity challenge and plays as well a crucial role in public health, being one of the most frequent disease of aging. Therefore, the assessment of effective countermeasures, or even the possibility to predict, and thus prevent orthostatic instability is of great importance. Heat stress affects orthostatic stability and may lead to impaired consciousness and decrease in cerebral perfusion, specifically during the exposure to G-forces. Conversely, peripheral cooling can prevent orthostatic intolerance - even in normothe

Anatomical and theoretical observations on otolith repositioning for benign paroxysmal positional vertigo.

OBJECTIVE: To determine if there is an anatomic basis for the assumption that loose, "rogue" otoliths presumed to arise from the utricular macula and theorized to cause benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) by impinging on semicircular canal ampullae could be returned to their original site by a series of changes in the position of the head called particle repositioning maneuvers (PRMs). Further, if such otolith movement were possible, once they were replaced into the utricle, would they adhere to the utricular macula? STUDY DESIGN: Kodachrome photographs of 2-mm-thick macrosections of

A Discrete Glycinergic Neuronal Population in the Ventromedial Medulla That Induces Muscle Atonia during REM Sleep and Cataplexy in Mice.

During rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, anti-gravity muscle tone and bodily movements are mostly absent, because somatic motoneurons are inhibited by descending inhibitory pathways. Recent studies showed that glycine/GABA neurons in the ventromedial medulla (VMM; GlyVMM neurons) play an important role in generating muscle atonia during REM sleep (REM-atonia). However, how these REM-atonia-inducing neurons interconnect with other neuronal populations has been unknown. In the present study, we first identified a specific subpopulation of GlyVMM neurons that play an important role in induction of

Surgical management of severe neglected adult idiopathic scoliosis: A review article on challenges and contemporary treatment strategies.

Neglected adult idiopathic scoliosis (NAdIS) is a spinal deformity characterized by severe rigidity and multiplanar curvature, significantly impairing pain levels, physical function, and health-related quality of life. Its complexity is heightened by longstanding vertebral malalignment, cardiopulmonary compromise, and age-related comorbidities, making surgical management particularly challenging. Despite progress in spinal deformity correction, consensus remains lacking on the optimal treatment strategy for these patients. This narrative review synthesizes contemporary surgical options for NAd

The novel use of urinary androgens to optimise detection of the fertile window in giant pandas.

ABSTRACT: Giant pandas are mono-estrus seasonal breeders, with the breeding season typically occurring in the spring. Successful fertilizati … ogens (via testosterone and DHEA assays), and hormone concentrations were corrected against urinary specific gravity. Across proestrus, estrogens increased while progestogens and androgens decreased - at the point of entry into proestrus, androgens (as detected by the testosterone assay) decreased prior to progestogens and gave 4 days advanced warning of proestrus …

Human balance, the evolution of bipedalism and dysequilibrium syndrome.

A new model of the uniqueness, nature and evolution of human bipedality is presented in the context of the etiology of the balance disorder of dysequilibrium syndrome. Human bipedality is biologically novel in several remarkable respects. Humans are (a) obligate, habitual and diverse in their bipedalism, (b) hold their body carriage spinally erect in a multisegmental "antigravity pole", (c) use their forelimbs exclusively for nonlocomotion, (d) support their body weight exclusively by vertical balance and normally never use prehensile holds. Further, human bipedalism is combined with (e) upper

Do patients with non-traumatic rotator cuff tears differ from healthy individuals in forward head posture, rounded shoulder posture, and thoracic kyphosis?

BACKGROUND: Altered cervicothoracic and scapular posture may influence shoulder mechanics, but it remains unclear whether patients with non-traumatic rotator cuff tears show consistent static postural changes. This study compared the craniovertebral angle, rounded shoulder angle, and thoracic kyphosis angle between patients with non-traumatic rotator cuff tears and healthy individuals. METHODS: This single-center, cross-sectional observational study included 39 patients with imaging-confirmed, full-thickness, non-massive, non-traumatic rotator cuff tears scheduled for repair and 30 healthy co

A call to arms: the absence of standardized return to play guidelines for professional rugby union players after cervical spine surgery.

Cervical spine injuries in elite rugby union, while infrequent, carry a disproportionately high risk for players. The nature of collisions in rugby creates unique biomechanical stresses on the cervical spine, heightening the risk of catastrophic injury. Injuries vary across a spectrum from transient neuropraxia ('stingers') to structural injuries requiring surgical intervention. Despite the gravity of these injuries, there remains no standardized, evidence-based return to play (RTP) protocol for rugby players after cervical spine surgery. A thorough literature review was undertaken to systemat

Excellent patient-reported long-term quality of life after an Ivor Lewis esophagectomy for cancer.

BACKGROUND: Long-term health-related quality of life (HRQOL) may be impacted by upper gastrointestinal tract dysfunction following esophagectomy in up to two-thirds of patients. After esophagectomy, the stomach conduit is passively relying on gravity for drainage. Any resistance to flow through the stomach conduit, therefore, has the potential to significantly impact long-term HRQOL. We have previously reported a side-to-side esophagogastric anastomotic technique, which optimizes anastomotic diameter and vascularity, resulting in a low incidence of leaks and strictures. A wide pyloroplasty is

The merit of group-level analyses in TMS targeting: group-based task-driven TMS coil positioning can outperform individual approaches - evidence from resting-state-, diffusion-, and functional-MR.

Individualized TMS coil positioning enhances the precision of targeting a specific brain region. The gold standard method for this is individual task based fMRI guided TMS. Alternatively, individual resting state fMRI (rs-fMRI) or the combination of rs-fMRI and Diffusion Weighted Imaging (DWI) can be used to guide TMS coil positioning. Another option is to use group MRI maps instead of individual maps. A last possibility is the atlas-based approach, which utilizes group data from previous studies, transferred to atlas space, e.g. Talairach coordinates (TAL). We examined all these positioning a

Obtaining new brewing yeasts using regional Chilean wine yeasts through an adaptive evolution program.

Beer consumption has increased worldwide, positioning it as the most consumed alcoholic beverage on the market. Saccharomyces cerevisiae brewing yeasts have specific genetic characteristics that allow them to survive in malt wort using maltose and maltotriose as the principal carbon source. However, metabolizing these sugars is challenging for non-brewery Saccharomyces strains under typical brewing conditions, which involve high osmotic stress and low temperatures. These conditions restrict beer producers to a limited range of yeast strains, increasing their cost and contributing to beer flavo
