Occult lead intoxication in patients with gout and kidney disease.

Ten patients with gout, hypertension, and mild to moderate renal insufficiency were studied for possible lead nephropathy by measuring stimulated urinary lead excretion. Seven had a history of lead exposure, 5 from illegal alcohol and 2 from industrial sources. Occult lead was assessed by 24 h urine collection measurements over a 72 h period after intramuscular administration of calcium disodium EDTA. Two patients with a history of lead exposure excreted 707 and 687 micrograms Pb/72 h, respectively, and a 3rd excreted 506 micrograms Pb/72 h. The remainder had a normal response, with mean urina

The hypercalcaemic syndrome in rats bearing the Walker carcinosarcoma 256.

The strain of Walker carcinosarcoma 256 described induces hypercalcaemia, hyperphosphataemia and hyperuraemia in tumour bearing rats. Changes in calcium and phosphorus excretion are observed as well as accompanying calcification of soft tissue organs and loss of bone calcium. These changes in calcium metabolism disappear after removal of the tumour, so that long-range action of the tumour can be stated. The results are discussed in comparison with three other animal models of tumour dependent hypercalcaemia.

Manganese transport via the transferrin mechanism.

Excessive manganese (Mn) uptake by brain cells, particularly in regions like the basal ganglia, can lead to toxicity. Mn(2+) is transported into cells via a number of mechanisms, while Mn(3+) is believed to be transported similarly to iron (Fe) via the transferrin (Tf) mechanism. Cellular Mn uptake is therefore determined by the activity of the mechanisms transporting Mn into each type of cell and by the amounts of Mn(2+), Mn(3+) and their complexes to which these cells are exposed; this complicates understanding the contributions of each transporter to Mn toxicity. While uptake of Fe(3+) via

Bioassays for evaluating the water-extractable genotoxic and toxic potential of soils polluted by metal smelters.

Physicochemical analyses of polluted soils are limited in their ability to determine all hazardous compounds, their bioavailability, and their combined effects on living organisms. Bioassays, on the other hand, can evaluate environmental quality more accurately. This study assesses the genotoxic potential of water extracts from soil polluted with metals (Pb, Cd, and Zn) by the former lead smelter in zerjav, Slovenia using comet assay with Tetrahymena thermophila and human hepatoma cells (HepG2). In addition, the toxicity of soil samples and their extracts was evaluated using Vibrio fischeri an

Content of Selected Harmful Metals (Zn, Pb, Cd) and Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Honeys from Apiaries Located in Urbanized Areas.

The chemical composition of honey, and therefore its quality and properties, is influenced by many factors, including its botanical origin and the harvesting conditions-the location of the apiary, access to melliferous plants, the proximity of industrial infrastructure and communication routes, etc. This quality may be reduced by undesirable, toxic compounds that penetrate honey from a contaminated environment, such as heavy metals and residues from other environmental pollutants. Therefore, the aim of our research was to assess the quality of honeys from urbanized areas-in particular, to asse

Genotoxicity assessments of alluvial soil irrigated with wastewater from a pesticide manufacturing industry.

In this study, organochlorine pesticides (OCP) and heavy metals were analyzed from wastewater- and groundwater- irrigated soils (control samples) by gas chromatography (GC) and atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS), respectively. Gas chromatographic analysis revealed the presence of high concentration of pesticides in soil irrigated with wastewater (WWS). These concentrations were far above the maximum residue permissible limits indicating that alluvial soils have high binding capacity of OCP. AAS analyses revealed higher concentration of heavy metals in WWS as compared to groundwater (GWS

Does cisplatin chemotherapy decrease the MDP uptake of normal bone? An experimental study.

OBJECTIVE: Bone scan is the accepted initial imaging modality for skeletal metastases. Cisplatin is a cell-cycle nonspecific antineoplastic agent used in some chemotherapy regimens. Knowing that platinum reacts with phosphate compounds such as methylenediphosphonic acid (MDP), decreases bone resorption and new bone formation, it can be proposed that cisplatin chemotherapy may decrease Tc-99m MDP bone uptake. We aimed to demonstrate, if present, the decrease in bone uptake and to determine the duration of this effect. METHODS: Thirty male Wistar rats were randomized into five groups, namely, p
