PURPOSE: To evaluate the learning effects of a deductive language-teaching procedure when teaching a novel gender agreement verb inflection to children with language impairment.
METHOD: Thirty-two 6-8-year-old children with language impairment were randomly assigned to either a deductive (N = 16) or an inductive (N = 16) treatment group. In the deductive treatment, the examiner presented a rule guiding the novel inflection to be learned as well as models of the inflection. In the inductive treatment, only models of the verb inflection were presented. Learning was assessed in 3 different produ

Speech intelligibility is known to be relatively unaffected by certain deformations of the acoustic spectrum. These include translations, stretching or contracting dilations, and shearing of the spectrum (represented along the logarithmic frequency axis). It is argued here that such robustness reflects a synergy between vocal production and auditory perception. Thus, on the one hand, it is shown that these spectral distortions are produced by common and unavoidable variations among different speakers pertaining to the length, cross-sectional profile, and losses of their vocal tracts. On the ot…

Although changes in children's phonological systems due to treatment have been documented in single-word testing, changes in conversational speech are less well known. Single-word and conversation samples were analyzed for 10 phonologically disordered children, before and after treatment and 3 months later. Results suggest that for most of the children, there were system changes in both single words and in conversational speech. It appears that many phonologically disordered children are able to extend their correct production to conversation without direct treatment on spontaneous speech.

The purpose of this study was to assess the generalization of correct articulation to nontreatment environments when self-monitoring procedures were implemented within versus outside of the clinic setting. Seven children who substituted /theta/ and /o/ for /s/ and /z/ participated in this study. Data were collected in the context of a multiple baseline design replicated across subjects. The children initially self-monitored their correct articulation during conversation in the clinic setting where treatment was implemented. Then, after varying intervals, self-monitoring outside of the clinic s

PURPOSE: This study investigated the relative outcomes of segmental and prosodic training of nonnative speakers of American English.
METHOD: The study used a single-subject, alternating treatments, multiple baseline design with replication across participants and counterbalanced for order effect. Participants were 4 adult male native Hindi speakers proficient in English. Two participants received ABABCACA (A = baseline/withdrawal, B = segmental training, C = prosody training), and 2 participants received ACACBABA, with a minimum of 5 sessions per phase. Segmental accuracy and prosodic accurac

The ability to transcribe disordered speech is a vital tool for speech-language pathologists, as accurate description of a client's speech output is needed for both diagnosis and effective intervention. Clients in the speech clinic often use sounds that are not part of the target sound system and which may, in some cases, be sounds not found in natural language at all. While the IPA provides a wide range of symbols that can be used in clinical transcription, the extended IPA (extIPA) may also be needed to transcribe atypical sounds never or rarely encountered in natural language. When using th

Incorrect production of intonation contours is a common phonatory problem in prelingually, profoundly deaf speakers. To help deaf speakers improve this, a visual display system for teaching intonation has been developed. In this system, called the Intonation Meter, visual feedback of intonation is given as a continuous representation of the pitch contour containing only the perceptually relevant aspects of the intonation pattern. This pitch-contour representation is supposed to facilitate the interpretation of the visual feedback of the pitch contour. A study was carried out, using a Single-Su

The purpose of this investigation was to calculate, from vowels in continuous speech, the signal-to-noise ratio (S/N ratio) and average fundamental vocal frequency (F0) for hearing-impaired young adults who demonstrated varying degrees of vocal tension/harshness, and to correlate these acoustic measures with the degree of perceived, vocal tension/harshness. Subjects for this investigation consisted of 20 hearing-impaired males and 20 hearing-impared females who ranged in degree of tension/harshness from severe to normal/relaxed. S/N ratios and F0s were calculated, using a computer analysis pro

Difficulties in understanding speech can increase progressively from 60 years of age. This means that by 70 years of age the handicap becomes quite clear and for those over 70 it is unmistakable. One assumes that the elderly have less need to communicate but the opposite is true: because of the often enforced decrease in physical activity, compensation must be looked for in the form of social contacts. As part of a research project on noise emission levels, auditory system function and satisfaction with living accommodation, 111 elderly or extremely elderly (average age approx. 85; spread 67-9

This paper describes a laboratory-based comparison of the effectiveness of two formulae for fitting linear hearing aids, the NAL(R) formula and the Cambridge formula. The formulae prescribe the desired insertion gain as a function of frequency, based on the audiometric threshold. The two formulae have a similar rationale; both are based on the goal that, for speech with a moderate level, all frequency bands should be equally loud (equal loudness per critical band) over the frequency range important for speech (400-5000 Hz), and the overall loudness should be comfortable. However, the formulae

This study concerns the results of cochlear implantation in children and adults from French cochlear implantation centers, monitored at one, two and three years by the Cochlear Implant French Registry EPIIC. This multicenter study enrolled 2603 subjects (1667 adults and 936 children) implanted in one ear. The following parameters were studied: hearing overall performances, monosyllabic or dissyllabic word perception, speech intelligibility, self-assessment questionnaire of Cochlear Implant (CI) benefits (Abbreviated profile of Hearing aid Benefit); professional activity and schooling. Thirty children of preschool age with severe phonological disorders were randomly assigned to two treatment groups. Group 1 received treatme … er the first 4 months of the study. At the 8-month assessment point the measures for conversational speech intelligibility continued to be significantly different, with group 1 scores higher than those of group 2. The expressive language measure did not detect a difference between groups at any time; however group 1 scores were consistently higher than group 2 scores.

We present a rationale and step-by-step description of a previously unpublished innovative surgical technique designed to overcome velopharyngeal insufficiency. This procedure maintains the anatomic integrity and physiologic function of the velopharynx by limiting interpalatal dissection and incorporates a method for flap attachment through the velum that is accessible, predictable, and versatile. The efficacy of this procedure in eliminating velopharyngeal insufficiency was evaluated by using rigorously controlled quantitative psychophysical scaling procedures of presurgical and postsurgical

BACKGROUND: Young adults who received cochlear implants (CI) during childhood experience considerable variability in psychological adjustment. Understanding and explaining this within-group variability can help to identify CI users who are at risk for adjustment problems and suggest intervention strategies. This study investigated associations between psychological adjustment and hearing history, speech-language skills, and nonverbal intelligence in young adults who received CIs in childhood.
METHODS: Study participants were 30 young adult CI users aged 18-27 years, who were implanted at age

BACKGROUND: Driven by recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI), particularly in medicine, audio-based voice and speech biomarkers are increasingly investigated for various medical applications as a complementary or even alternative modality to traditional medical devices. The adoption of deep learning techniques in recent literature is motivated by their superior performance compared to classical machine learning methods. However, ethical and regulatory concerns regarding the black-box nature of these models have limited their integration into clinical workflows. Consequently, explainab

BACKGROUND: Integrating large language models (LLMs), such as ChatGPT, into speech-language pathology (SLP) presents promising opportunities and notable challenges. While these tools can support diagnostics, streamline documentation and assist in therapy planning, they also raise concerns related to misinformation, cultural insensitivity, overreliance and ethical ambiguity. Current discourse often centres on technological capabilities, overlooking how future speech-language pathologists (SLPs) are being prepared to use such tools responsibly.
AIMS: This paper examines the pedagogical, ethical
