Validity of the Multiple Auditory Processing Assessment-2: A Test of Auditory Processing Disorder.

Purpose A normative study using the Multiple Auditory Processing Assessment-2 (MAPA-2; Schow et al., 2018) was recently completed. With access to these data, the authors extend that work and support a definite construct for auditory processing disorder (APD). The goal here is to examine MAPA-2 reliability and validity (construct, content, and concurrent). Evidence for the APD construct is further buttressed by measures of sensitivity and specificity. Results of MAPA-2 testing on children diagnosed with learning disability (LD), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and specific lang

Knowledge and attitudes of allied health professional students regarding the stroke rehabilitation team and the role of the Speech and Language Therapist.

BACKGROUND: One of the major barriers to effective team working among healthcare professionals is a lack of knowledge of each other's roles. The importance of understanding Irish healthcare students' attitudes towards team working and each other's roles led to the development of this study. AIMS: The aims were to investigate allied health professional students' perceptions and experiences of the stroke rehabilitation team and the role of the Speech and Language Therapist (SLT). METHODS & PROCEDURES: A survey first developed by Felsher and Ross (1994) and further developed by Insalaco et al.

Early Identification of DLD in Paediatric Practice: A Pilot Validation of the CLAP Screening Tool in Italian Outpatient Settings.

BACKGROUND: Language development in early childhood varies considerably, making early detection of Developmental Language Disorders (DLDs) challenging despite their high prevalence and long-term effects on learning and mental health. In Italy, no culturally adapted, easy-to-use screening tools are currently available in primary care. To address this gap, a screening tool was developed to support the early identification of children aged 24-72 months at risk of DLD and other clinically relevant language difficulties. AIMS: To evaluate the psychometric properties and accuracy of the Comunicazio

Intracranial vascular pathology in two further patients with Floating-Harbor syndrome: Proposals for cerebrovascular disease risk management.

Floating-Harbor syndrome (FHS) is a rare, heritable disorder caused by variants in the SRCAP gene. Most individuals with FHS have characteristic facial features, short stature, and speech and language impairment. Although FHS has been likely under-diagnosed due to a combination of lack of recognition of the clinical phenotype and limited access to genomic testing, it is a rare condition with around 100 individuals reported in the medical literature. Case series have been biased towards younger individuals (vast majority <20 years of age) meaning that it has been challenging to provide accurate

Conducting clinical trials in a constantly changing health care environment.

Continuous change and cost containment characterize the current health care system, making conduct of clinical trials and other clinical research difficult. Identification, accrual, and follow-up of patients who move between health care environments such as hospitals, nursing homes, schools and the home is particularly challenging. This article describes a circuit rider approach to patient identification and follow-up that was established by the Communication Sciences and Disorders Clinical Trials Research Group. It also gives suggestions for design of clinical trials in a constantly changing

Data-driven modelling of tau pathology reveals distinct progressive supranuclear palsy subtypes.

Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is a heterogeneous neurodegenerative disease characterized by the accumulation of misfolded 4-repeat tau within neurons and glial cells. There are limited longitudinal data on pathologically confirmed PSP patients with phenotypes other than classic Richardson's syndrome (RS) and the pathomechanisms responsible for the broad variability in clinical phenotype and progression are not well understood. An unresolved question in this context is whether distinct spatiotemporal patterns of tau pathology propagation exist within the clinicopathological spectrum of P

Clinical voice analysis of Carnatic singers.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Carnatic singing is a classical South Indian style of music that involves rigorous training to produce an "open throated" loud, predominantly low-pitched singing, embedded with vocal nuances in higher pitches. Voice problems in singers are not uncommon. The objective was to report the nature of voice problems and apply a routine protocol to assess the voice. METHODS: Forty-five trained performing singers (females: 36 and males: 9) who reported to a tertiary care hospital with voice problems underwent voice assessment. The study analyzed their problems and the clinica
