Patterns, aetiology and risk factors of intimate partner violence-related injuries to head, neck and face in Chinese women.

BACKGROUND: Intimate partner violence (IPV) related injuries have been recognized among health care professionals. However, few studies have provided detailed information on injuries to the head, neck and face regions in Chinese women. As abused Chinese women are generally unwilling to disclose IPV and there are differences in socio-demographic characteristics, societal norms and behaviours, the women may exhibit different patterns, aetiology and risk factors of IPV-related HNF injuries. This study aims to examine the patterns of head, neck and face injuries presenting to Accident and Emergenc

Gender abuse and major depression among transgender women: a prospective study of vulnerability and resilience.

OBJECTIVES: We examined the social and interpersonal context of gender abuse and its effects on Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition major depression among transgender women. METHODS: We conducted a 3-year prospective study (2004-2007) among 230 transgender women aged 19 to 59 years from the New York City Metropolitan Area. Statistical techniques included generalized estimating equations (logistic regression). RESULTS: We observed significant associations of psychological and physical gender abuse with major depression during follow-up. New or persistent expe

The long arc of recovery: characterizing intimate partner violence and its psychosocial effects across 17 years.

Little is known about how intimate partner violence (IPV) affects women's long-term mental health. Using 17 years of data from adolescent mothers, this study (a) empirically identified three subgroups based on patterns of IPV exposure during 4 years of their adolescence; (b) found that subgroup membership was a predictor of psychosocial outcomes in the subsequent 13 years, and (c) showed that the long-term effects of IPV exposure persisted even while controlling for the role of early poverty. By their 30s, women had recovered from IPV such that there were no significant differences between gro

Physical violence between intimate partners during pregnancy and postpartum: a prediction model for use in primary health care facilities.

This article offers a simple predictive model of physical intimate partner violence (PIPV) to be used by primary health care (PHC) professionals. The sample comprised 811 mothers of children <5 months old attending PHC facilities in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. A multinomial logit model was used. Measured by the Revised Conflict Tactics Scales, PIPV was classified in three levels (absence, at least one episode during pregnancy or postpartum, and presence in both periods). Socio-economic, demographic and life style variables were considered as potential predictors. Maternal age <20 years, an educati

[Psychopathology, characteristics of violence and dropout in male batterers treatment programs: results of an intervention service].

This paper deals with male violence toward female partners and the analysis of some variables related to this aggressive behavior. We study the type of violence perpetrated and some indicators of psychopathology, such as personality disorders, previous psychiatric or psychological care, substance abuse and jealous behavior, among others. In addition, we examine the relationship between these variables and the fact that the men do not complete the treatment program. For this purpose, we employed a sample of 118 men who voluntarily participated in an intervention service, and we carried out an e

Barriers to screening for intimate partner violence: a mixed-methods study of providers in family planning clinics.

CONTEXT: Universal screening for intimate partner violence has been recommended for health care settings. However, provider adherence to this recommendation is low, and little research has explored perspectives on relevant policies and procedures among providers in family planning centers. METHODS: In 2009, a sample of 75 health care staff from a large, urban family planning organization that has a protocol for screening for partner violence participated in focus group discussions about their attitudes toward, perceptions of barriers to and preparedness for such screening; 64 of them also com

Police attitudes toward policing partner violence against women: do they correspond to different psychosocial profiles?

This study analyzed whether police attitudes toward policing partner violence against women corresponded with different psychosocial profiles. Two attitudes toward policing partner violence were considered-one reflecting a general preference for a conditional law enforcement (depending on the willingness of the victim to press charges against the offender) and the other reflecting a general preference for unconditional law enforcement (regardless of the victim's willingness to press charges against the offender). Results from a sample of 378 police officers showed that those police officers wh

Sleep loss and partner violence victimization.

Intimate partner violence victimization has been associated with serious health problems among women, including many disorders that involve sleep disturbances. However, there has been only limited examination of sleep duration among women with victimization experiences. A total of 756 women with a domestic violence order (DVO) against a male intimate partner were interviewed about their health, mental health, substance use, and partner violence victimization. Face-to-face interviews were conducted from February 2001 to November 2003 for data collection in three rural and one urban county repre

Sexual assault support services and community systems: understanding critical issues and needs in the LGBTQ community.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) individuals encounter social conditions that create important considerations for LGBTQ sexual assault victims. This exploratory, mixed-methods study examines the relationship between community attitudes toward LGBTQ persons and associated community responses to LGBTQ sexual assault victims. An online and paper-and-pencil survey (n = 130) and four focus group interviews (n = 14) are analyzed using frequency distributions and grounded theory methods. The central theme that emerged in focus group interviews, titled "low community awareness an

Persistence and desistance of the perpetration of physical aggression across relationships: findings from a national study of adolescents.

This study examined the persistent perpetration of physical intimate partner violence (IPV) across relationships. Based on the National Longitudinal Study on Adolescent Health, data were analyzed on 6,446 young adults, who reported on two recent relationships. Frequency and logistic regression analyses were used to examine the persistence of physical IPV perpetration across relationships and the predictors of persistent perpetration. Among individuals who perpetrated physical violence in their first relationship, 29.7% persisted in their perpetration in the second relationship and 70.3% desist

Intimate partner violence and psychological functioning in Latina women.

In this study, the researchers examined the associations among intimate partner violence and psychological functioning in 282 Latina women between 18 and 45 years. Participants were interviewed about demographic characteristics, experiences with physical, sexual, and psychological intimate partner violence, psychological symptoms, stressful life events, and childhood maltreatment. Physical violence was associated with symptoms of depression and hostility, and psychological abuse was related to depression, hostility, and somatization. Sexual violence was generally not associated with psychologi

The NSW Health routine screening for domestic violence program.

Routine questioning of women about abuse by their intimate partner has been progressively introduced in NSW in antenatal, early childhood, alcohol and other drug and mental health services since 2001. This was done because of the serious health consequences of domestic violence and the low identification rate of abuse by health services. Following a pilot that found strong support from female patients, this strategy is now well established in NSW public health services. Recent data indicate that approximately 10,000 women a month are asked these questions and that 7.3% of them report experienc

Physical and psychological symptoms in emotionally abused and non-abused women.

BACKGROUND: This brief report compares emotionally abused and non-abused female family practice patients on physical and emotional symptoms, alcohol use problems, and social support problems. METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of data from a cross-sectional, multicenter study of victimization of family practice patients. Forty-seven adult women meeting criteria for emotional abuse (within the past year) and no physical abuse were matched demographically with 47 non-abused women. Each woman completed demographic and health history questionnaires, including questions about physical and

Gestational weight gain differentials in the presence of intimate partner violence.

OBJECTIVE: To assess whether gestational weight gain (GWG) during pregnancy is linked to intimate partner violence (IPV). METHODS: A total of 394 women being delivered at term at Rio de Janeiro public maternities from March to October 2000 were randomly selected. The Revised Conflict Tactics Scales were used to assess IPV and GWG was expressed through the Net Weight Gain (NWG) indicator. Multiple linear regression was used to control for socioeconomic, demographic, reproductive, and nutritional confounding factors, as well as lifestyle factors such as alcohol, drug, and tobacco consumption.

The impact of current and past interpersonal violence on women's mental health.

Violence against women, and more particularly male partner violence, is frequent. Although there are many studies on the consequences of violence on women's mental health, a number of aspects are still unclear. The impact of violence is seldom studied in the context of other risk factors of mental distress, psychological abuse is rarely considered, and older women are generally excluded from the sample. This study aims to analyze the relationships between current and past violence and three indicators of current women's health--psychological distress, the use of psychoactive drugs and a subjec

Adult trauma and HIV status among Latinas: effects upon psychological adjustment and substance use.

Latinas have unique cultural factors that can contribute to their health, including recent immigration, documentation status, and language barriers. Additional stressors and experiencing traumatic events can further compromise their psychological adjustment and substance use. This study tests the differential contribution of adult trauma and other life stressors to psychological adjustment and substance use among Latinas who differ in their HIV status and level of acculturation. Baseline and 1-year follow-up data on a community sample of 113 (79 HIV-positive and 34 HIV-negative) 1 to 50 year o
