INTRODUCTION: The routine histologic stains used in dermatopathology are usually hematoxylin-eosin-safran. In order to stain the mucins, specific dyes are necessary. The purpose of this study was to perform a routine quadrichromic stain which included Astra blue as specific dye of mucins. The applications of this hematoxylin-eosin-safran-Astra blue stain were evaluated after 5 years of systematic use.

Pleuropulmonary blastoma (PPB) is a rare and highly aggressive tumor in children and is distinct from ordinary pulmonary blastoma or carcinosarcoma of the lung. This report describes the phenotypical characteristics of seven PPB tumors. The patients were five females and two males, all diagnosed in their third year of life. To determine the distribution of colon-ovarian tumor antigen in adenocarcinomas, the authors studied formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue from 501 cases of adenocarcinoma from a variety of primary sites using a monoclonal antibody to colon-ovarian tumor antigen and an avidin-biotin immunohistochemical technique. We report the immunolocalization of extensive amyloid beta-protein in senile plaques, cerebrovascular amyloid deposits, neurofibrillary tangles and preamyloid in a 32-year-old man with progressive dementia not due to trisomy 21 or trauma. These amyloid deposits were non-reactive to antibodies directed against scrapie amyloid. Our data indicate that the presence of amyloid beta-protein is not limited to normal aging, Alzheimer's disease and related disorders but is also found in younger individuals with progressive dementia.

We have carried out a morphometric study of the lesions of 74 patients with oral lichen planus. We have found as important data that the parameters differentiating the reticulated clinical lesions from the atrophic or erosive lesions are the epithelial thickness and the length of the dermic papillae. On the other hand, we have seen no difference between both types of lesions as regards the quantity of infiltrate in the connective tissue.

Of 14 patients who underwent allogeneic or syngeneic bone marrow transplantation, 6 had a transient appearance of small blastoid cells in the bone marrow after transplantation. The effects of the anxiogenic beta-carboline FG-7142 (15 mg/kg IP) on exploratory locomotor activity were assessed in rats with sham or ibotenic acid (IA) lesions of the dorsal or ventral hippocampus. FG-7142 reduced exploratory activity similarly in control animals as well as in those with IA lesions of the ventral hippocampus. We report the histological findings in a case of hereditary diabetes insipidus (HDI) using vasopressin (VP) immunohistochemistry. The hypothalamus displayed a marked loss of magnocellular VP neurons, with preservation of the smaller cells. The neurohypophysis was severely atrophic with scanty immunoreactivity. Our results support the hypothesis that HDI results from a selective degeneration of VP neurons affecting chiefly the magnocellular elements projecting to the neurohypophysis. The sparing of the parvocellular component may reflect the projection of these neurons to non-pituitary targets.

The records of two cytopathology laboratories, covering an aggregate of 33 years, were searched for pleural, peritoneal and pericardial fluids reported as containing cells of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). This search embraced 9,297 serous fluids from 7,389 patients. Cells of SCCs were found in the fluids from only 46 patients, illustrating the infrequency of such a finding, with most of the SCC cells originating in primary neoplasms of the lung (16), female genital tract (8) or larynx (6). In summary, this case illustrates a previously unrecognized syndrome of reticulocytosis secondary to a defect in reticulin degradation. We are aware of two other case reports in the literature which also describe patients with an elevated reticulocyte count who's red cells appeared to lack the ability to degrade reticulin (Lofters et. al.1978, Tulliez et. al. 1982).
