Lessons learned from unintended sublingual sialography: imaging anatomy, technical considerations, and diagnostic implications.

OBJECTIVE: Digital subtraction sialography of the sublingual glands has not been reported previously, to our knowledge. We present a case series in which unintended digital subtraction sialography of the sublingual glands occurred during attempts at submandibular digital subtraction sialography. In four of the six cases, a mistaken diagnosis of severe sublingual gland sialectasis was made. CONCLUSION: Because of the unique histologic characteristics of the sublingual glands, knowledge of the technical aspects of sublingual duct cannulation and the relevant imaging anatomy is necessary to avoi

SparCLeS: dynamic l₁ sparse classifiers with level sets for robust beard/moustache detection and segmentation.

Robust facial hair detection and segmentation is a highly valued soft biometric attribute for carrying out forensic facial analysis. In this paper, we propose a novel and fully automatic system, called SparCLeS, for beard/moustache detection and segmentation in challenging facial images. SparCLeS uses the multiscale self-quotient (MSQ) algorithm to preprocess facial images and deal with illumination variation. Histogram of oriented gradients (HOG) features are extracted from the preprocessed images and a dynamic sparse classifier is built using these features to classify a facial region as eit

Single-photon emission computed tomography/computed tomography in abdominal diseases.

Single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) studies of the abdominal region are established in conventional nuclear medicine because of their easy and large availability, even in the most peripheral hospitals. It is well known that SPECT imaging demonstrates function, rather than anatomy. It is useful in the diagnosis of various disorders because of its ability to detect changes caused by disease before identifiable anatomic correlates and clinical manifestations exist. However, SPECT data frequently need anatomic landmarks to precisely depict the site of a focus of abnormal tracer upta

Deformable registration of prone and supine colons for CT colonography.

CT colonography (CTC) is a non-invasive technique for detecting colorectal polyps and colon cancer. Through the addition of the prone scanning with the original supine scanning, the possibility of detecting the polyps is increased. The registration process for this application requires the comparison between the prone and supine colons for diagnosis. A level-set representation of the object boundary using a distance map is presented in this paper as an input to demons registration algorithm for supine and prone CT colonography image data. After first aligning the colon volumes based on the pat

A method for aligning trans-tibial residual limb shapes so as to identify regions of shape change.

Quantification of the change in shape of a residual limb over time is relevant to the fitting of an external prosthesis. Three algorithms were developed and evaluated to align residual limb shapes: iterative closest points (ICP), mean absolute difference, and weighted surface normals/mean absolute difference. Evaluations were conducted by aligning residual limb shapes with known deformations and transformations with their original shapes. Results showed that ICP did not perform well in that it tended to favor a global distribution of local shape difference rather than localization of the error

The nature of traumatic memories: a 4-T FMRI functional connectivity analysis.

OBJECTIVE: This study used functional connectivity analyses to assess interregional brain activity correlations during the recall of traumatic memories in traumatized subjects with and without posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). METHOD: Both 4-T functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and functional connectivity analyses were used to assess interregional brain activity correlations during script-driven symptom provocation in traumatized subjects with (N=11) and without (N=13) PTSD. Functional connectivity analyses were carried out by using data for brain regions activated in both the P

Fetal brain MRI: segmentation and biometric analysis of the posterior fossa.

This paper presents a novel approach to fetal magnetic resonance image segmentation and biometric analysis of the posterior fossa's midline structures. We developed a semi-automatic segmentation method (based on a region growing technique) and tested the algorithm on images of 104 normal fetuses. Using the segmented regions of interest (posterior fossa, vermis, and brainstem), we computed four relative area ratios. Statistical and clinical analysis of our results showed that the relative development of these structures appears to be independent of pregnancy term. In an additional study of 23 p

Thallium-technetium subtraction scintigraphy of enlarged parathyroid glands after calcitonin stimulation of parathyroid hormone secretion.

To improve the sensitivity of thallium-technetium subtraction scintigraphy for preoperative localization procedure of enlarged parathyroid glands in primary hyperparathyroidism, we administered calcitonin intramuscularly 4 hours before the scintigraphy in 14 consecutive patients. Injection of calcitonin reduced plasma levels of ionized calcium from 1.47 +/- 0.10 mmol/l to 1.41 +/- 0.09 mmol/l (p less than 0.01). Concomitantly, serum levels of intact parathyroid hormone increased from 6.4 +/- 2.5 pmol/l to 7.9 +/- 2.6 pmol/l (p less than 0.001). The scintigram after calcitonin injection visuali

Computed tomography of bilateral carotid body tumours.

The CT images in 4 patients with bilateral carotid body tumours are reported. These CT findings seem to be typical, consisting of a well-circumscribed and strongly contrast-enhancing mass, situated at the bifurcation of the common carotid artery, displacing the adjacent structures. Computed tomography proves to be an excellent and non-invasive diagnostic examination. Angiography is necessary only if embolisation prior to surgery is requested.

The role of intravenous digital subtraction angiography in the evaluation of extracranial carotid artery disease. Can the decision for carotid artery surgery be made solely on the basis of its findings?

This retrospective study compared intravenous digital subtraction angiography (IV-DSA) with conventional catheter angiography (CA) performed on 105 patients with suspected cerebrovascular disease. Comparisons were made considering CA as the "gold standard." Factors reviewed for correlation included carotid artery stenosis, ulceration, fibromuscular disease, vessel occlusion, and subclavian and intracranial lesions. Each IV-DSA was judged as to its quality. Eighty-seven patients (83%) had interpretable IV-DSA studies. IV-DSA differed from CA regarding stenosis on 46 carotid arteries (26%). Of 4

Cardiovascular applications of digital subtraction angiography.

Continuing interest exists in the cardiovascular applications for digital subtraction angiography. The principal intravenous application is in the evaluation of left ventricular function and the quantitative parameters presently available for digital methods. Intraarterial applications include the ability to screen multiple vascular systems, including the coronary circulation and the carotid or peripheral vascular structures. Quantitative functions available are stenosis sizing, phase and amplitude analysis, and, finally, "road mapping" during cardiovascular interventional procedures. Major ex

Transvenous digital subtraction angiography (DSA) for diagnostic control following percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) in patients with renovascular hypertension.

Transvenous digital subtraction angiography (DSA) of the kidneys has shown to be useful in detection of renovascular abnormalities in hypertensive patients. In this study DSA was performed in 27 patients (fibrom. dyspl. n = 12, arterioscl. n = 15) following percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) of renal artery stenosis. Concerning PTA-effect on blood pressure, patients were classified in 3 groups (normal n = 13, improved n = 10, failure n = 4). DSA images and simultaneously determined effective renal plasma flow (ERPF) were correlated with response of blood pressure to PTA. The results d

The cerebrovascular effects of intraarterial CO2 in quantities required for diagnostic imaging.

The recent development of digital subtraction angiography (DSA) has renewed interest in the use of gases, especially carbon dioxide, as contrast agents. Both early physiologic studies and recent clinical reports suggest that arterial CO2-DSA is a safe and useful diagnostic tool in the examination of extremity circulation. The present study examined the neurologic sequelae, pathologic changes, and effects on the blood-brain barrier to intravenous Evans-Blue and horseradish peroxidase of intracarotid CO2, in albino rats. As with other forms of cerebral gas embolization, CO2 produced multifocal i

[Aortic insufficiency in Takayasu's disease. Apropos of 3 surgically treated cases and review of the literature].

The author report the cases of three women with aortic regurgitation associated with aneurysmal dilatation of the ascending thoracic aorta. Aortic valve replacement was carried out in the 3 cases, with resection of the aortic aneurysm in 2 cases. Histological examination of the aortic wall in all 3 cases showed non-specific aortitis in the adventitia and media, appearances comparable to those described in Takayasu's disease. The incidence of aortic regurgitation in Takayasu's disease is about 10%. These 3 cases are compared with 30 other cases with histological confirmation in the medical lite

Digital angiography in the diagnosis of congenital heart disease.

Based on experimental and clinical studies, the technical aspects (choice of projection, injection technique), experimental and clinical results, and the indications for computerized digital angiography in congenital heart disease are reviewed. To obtain high-quality diagnostic images consistently, ECG-gating, suspended or gated respiration, and short pulsewidth acquisition are required. Clinically useful diagnostic information has been acquired in children with suspected functional murmurs, cardiac surgery that is believed to be inadequate, and in cyanotic newborns after intravenous injection

Digital subtraction angiography as a method of screening for coronary artery disease during peripheral vascular angiography.

Since myocardial infarction is the major cause of perioperative and postoperative death following peripheral vascular surgery, an accurate method of screening for coronary artery disease in this group of patients is needed. Digital subtraction angiography (DSA) with the use of intra-arterial aortic root injection of contrast material was evaluated as a method of screening for coronary artery disease in patients undergoing angiography for peripheral vascular disease. The feasibility of this method was demonstrated in animal experiments. Fifteen milliliters of Renografin-76 was power injected in
