Effect of multiple autoclave cycles on the surface roughness of HyFlex CM and HyFlex EDM files: an atomic force microscopy study.

AIM: To compare the effect of autoclave cycles on the surface topography and roughness of HyFlex CM and HyFlex EDM instruments using atomic force microscopy (AFM) analysis. METHODOLOGY: Eight new files of each brand were subdivided into four subgroups (n = 2/each subgroup). One group was allocated as the control group and not subjected to autoclave sterilization. The other three groups were subjected to different numbers (1, 5, and 10) of autoclave sterilization cycles. After the cycle instruments were subjected to AFM analysis. Roughness average (Ra) and the root mean square (RMS) values wer

Hydrothermal growth of Zn2 SnO4 :Eu,Ca for red emission.

Zinc stannate (Zn2 SnO4 ) and Zn2 SnO4 codoped with Eu3+ and Ca2+ (ZTO:Eu,Ca) were synthesized by hydrothermal method and characterized with X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDAX), Raman spectrometer, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) and photoluminescence (PL) spectrophotometers. PL analysis of Zn2 SnO4 gives broad defect induced emission in the region 500-750 nm. The crystal structure of Zn2 SnO4 was retained even with a nominal doping of Eu, Ca and its combination in the Zn2 SnO4 . The Eu3+ ions were found to occupy t

Methane Storage in Paddlewheel-Based Porous Coordination Cages.

Although gas adsorption properties of extended three-dimensional metal-organic materials have been widely studied, they remain relatively unexplored in porous molecular systems. This is particularly the case for porous coordination cages for which surface areas are typically not reported. Herein, we report the synthesis, characterization, activation, and gas adsorption properties of a family of carbazole-based cages. The chromium analog displays a coordination cage record BET (Brunauer-Emmett-Teller) surface area of 1235 m2/g. With precise synthesis and activation procedures, two previously re

Hybrid Janus Microparticles Achieving Selective Encapsulation for Theranostic Applications via a Facile Solvent Emulsion Method.

Anisotropic Janus particles composed of biocompatible polymers have been gaining considerable interest for biomedical applications. Here, the fabrication of hybrid Janus particles via a single-step solvent emulsion technique, potentially for theranostic purposes, is shown. Through this technique, the selective encapsulation of therapeutic and diagnostic agents is streamlined into different "faces" of the Janus structure. This facile technique is used to seamlessly fabricate polymeric-based hybrid Janus particles for theranostic applications with little complexity.

UHMWPE acetabular cup creep deformation during the run-in phase of THA's life cycle.

Ultra-high molecular polyethylene (UHMWPE) is one of the most used materials of the acetabular liners in total tip arthroplasty (THA). Polyethylene has good tribological properties and biocompatibility. However, the lifetime of polyethylene implants is limited by wear related complications. Polyethylene material released into the periprosthetic environment induces osteolysis that can be followed by implant loosening. Wear of cup is influenced mainly by orientation of the cup in pelvis, by initial geometry before the material degradation and by tribological parameters. Aim of this study is to f

Efficient prion disease transmission through common environmental materials.

Prion diseases are a group of fatal neurodegenerative diseases associated with a protein-based infectious agent, termed prion. Compelling evidence suggests that natural transmission of prion diseases is mediated by environmental contamination with infectious prions. We hypothesized that several natural and man-made materials, commonly found in the environments of wild and captive animals, can bind prions and may act as vectors for disease transmission. To test our hypothesis, we exposed surfaces composed of various common environmental materials (i.e. wood, rocks, plastic, glass, cement, stain

The Relationship Between Surface Curvature and Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Wall Stress.

The maximum diameter (MD) criterion is the most important factor when predicting risk of rupture of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs). An elevated wall stress has also been linked to a high risk of aneurysm rupture, yet is an uncommon clinical practice to compute AAA wall stress. The purpose of this study is to assess whether other characteristics of the AAA geometry are statistically correlated with wall stress. Using in-house segmentation and meshing algorithms, 30 patient-specific AAA models were generated for finite element analysis (FEA). These models were subsequently used to estimate wa

Merging Icosahedral Boron Clusters and Magnetic Nanoparticles: Aiming toward Multifunctional Nanohybrid Materials.

All-inorganic-made nanohybrid icosahedral boron cluster magnetic nanoparticles have been prepared. These magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) consist of a magnetic core and an inorganic carboranylphosphinate shell. The phosphinate is directly bonded to the iron atoms of the surface in a bidentated coordination mode. The nanoparticles have been characterized by TEM, X-ray powder diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, energy dispersive X-ray analysis, high resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, magnetometry measurements, and redox titration, among other techniques. These studies have led to a compos

Potential applications and human biosafety of nanomaterials used in nanomedicine.

With the rapid development of nanotechnology, potential applications of nanomaterials in medicine have been widely researched in recent years. Nanomaterials themselves can be used as image agents or therapeutic drugs, and for drug and gene delivery, biological devices, nanoelectronic biosensors or molecular nanotechnology. As the composition, morphology, chemical properties, implant sites as well as potential applications become more and more complex, human biosafety of nanomaterials for clinical use has become a major concern. If nanoparticles accumulate in the human body or interact with the

Leaping lizards landing on leaves: escape-induced jumps in the rainforest canopy challenge the adhesive limits of geckos.

The remarkable adhesive capabilities of geckos have garnered attention from scientists and the public for centuries. Geckos are known to have an adhesive load-bearing capacity far in excess (by 100-fold or more) of that required to support their body mass or accommodate the loading imparted during maximal locomotor acceleration. Few studies, however, have investigated the ecological contexts in which geckos use their adhesive system and how this may influence its properties. Here we develop a modelling framework to assess whether their prodigious adhesive capacity ever comes under selective ch

Convection-Diffusion Layer in an "Open Space" for Local Surface Treatment and Microfabrication using a Four-Aperture Microchemical Pen.

A four-aperture microchemical pen was used to produce a stable convection-diffusion layer in an "open space" for microreactions and microfabrication. The process represents a new method for microreactions and microfabrication in a convection-diffusion layer. To prove the concept of a convection-diffusion layer in an "open space", bovine serum albumin was labeled with 4-fluoro-7-nitro-2,1,3-benzoxadiazole to confirm that the small convection-diffusion layer was effective for local surface treatment. To demonstrate the potential for microfabrication, silver patterns were fabricated on a glass su

Simulations of inorganic-bioorganic interfaces to discover new materials: insights, comparisons to experiment, challenges, and opportunities.

Natural and man-made materials often rely on functional interfaces between inorganic and organic compounds. Examples include skeletal tissues and biominerals, drug delivery systems, catalysts, sensors, separation media, energy conversion devices, and polymer nanocomposites. Current laboratory techniques are limited to monitor and manipulate assembly on the 1 to 100 nm scale, time-consuming, and costly. Computational methods have become increasingly reliable to understand materials assembly and performance. This review explores the merit of simulations in comparison to experiment at the 1 to 10

A Multifunctional Surface That Simultaneously Balances Hydrophilic Enzyme Catalysis and Hydrophobic Water Repellency.

The compatibility of multiple functions at a single interface is difficult to achieve, but is even more challenging when the functions directly counteract one another. This study provides insight into the creation of a simultaneously multifunctional surface formed by balancing two orthogonal functions; water repellency and enzyme catalysis. A partially fluorinated thiol is used to impart bulk hydrophobicity on the surface, and an N-hydroxysuccinimide ester-terminated thiol provides a specific anchoring sites for the covalent enzyme attachment. Different ratios of the two thiols are mixed toget

Adsorption of T4 bacteriophages on planar indium tin oxide surface via controlled surface tailoring.

The work investigates the influence of surface physicochemical properties of planar indium tin oxide (ITO) as a model substrate on T4 bacteriophage adsorption. A comparative T4 bacteriophage adsorption study shows a significant difference in bacteriophage adsorption observed on chemically modified planar ITO when compared to similarly modified particulate ITO, which infers that trends observed in virus-particle interaction studies are not necessarily transferrable to predict virus-planar surface adsorption behaviour. We also found that ITO surfaces modified with methyl groups, (resulting in in

Design of magnesium alloys with controllable degradation for biomedical implants: From bulk to surface.

UNLABELLED: The combination of high strength, light weight, and natural biodegradability renders magnesium (Mg)-based alloys promising in orthopedic implants and cardiovascular stents. Being metallic materials, Mg and Mg alloys made for scaffolds provide the necessary mechanical support for tissue healing and cell growth in the early stage, while natural degradation and reabsorption by surrounding tissues in the later stage make an unnecessarily follow-up removal surgery. However, uncontrolled degradation may collapse the scaffolds resulting in premature implant failure, and there has been muc

Evaluation of larviposition site selection of Glossina brevipalpis.

Tsetse species (Diptera: Glossinidae) are vectors of trypanosome parasites which cause disease in both humans and livestock. In South Africa Glossina austeni Newstead, 1912 and G. brevipalpis Newstead, 1911 are responsible for the cyclical transmission of animal trypanosomes causing African animal trypanosomiasis also referred to as nagana. Gravid tsetse females deposit a single larva in specific sites but little information is available on biotic and abiotic factors that govern site selection. This study therefore aimed to characterize some of the substrate conditions that may influence selec

Effect of energy source, salt concentration and loading force on colloidal interactions between Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans cells and mineral surfaces.

The surface appendages and extracellular polymeric substances of cells play an important role in the bacterial adhesion process. In this work, colloidal forces and nanomechanical properties of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans (A. f) interacted with silicon wafer and pyrite (FeS2) surfaces in solutions of varying salt concentrations were quantitatively examined using the bacterial probe technique with atomic force microscopy. A. f cells were cultured with either ferrous sulfate or elemental sulfur as key energy sources. Our results show that A. f cells grown with ferrous ion and elemental sulfur

Dynamic Monitoring Reveals Motor Task Characteristics in Prehistoric Technical Gestures.

Reconstructing ancient technical gestures associated with simple tool actions is crucial for understanding the co-evolution of the human forelimb and its associated control-related cognitive functions on the one hand, and of the human technological arsenal on the other hand. Although the topic of gesture is an old one in Paleolithic archaeology and in anthropology in general, very few studies have taken advantage of the new technologies from the science of kinematics in order to improve replicative experimental protocols. Recent work in paleoanthropology has shown the potential of monitored re
