Its Not about the Destination, Its about the Journey-Plotting 50 Years of Changing Clinical Trends in Plastic Surgery in a Public Sector Teaching Hospital.

Background The year 2019 marked the 50th anniversary of plastic surgery department of our institution. We present an audit to plot the changing clinical trends in our work in the past five decades. Methods A single-center retrospective cohort study based on the department demographics was performed and compared across the decades from 1969 to 2019. Results In 1969, the relative proportion of reconstructive versus cosmetic surgery procedures was 94.32% versus 5.68%; in 2019 this was 76.25% and 23.75%, respectively. An increase of 22 times increase in outpatient registrations, 13.1 times in tota

Innovative overhead transparent plastic barrier with powered suction technique intended to limit coronavirus disease 2019 aerosols spread during fiber-optic intubation and throughout the surgery.

BACKGROUND: In the context of the current coronavirus pandemic, we propose an inexpensive, innovative overhead transparent plastic barrier with powered suction (OTPBPS) technique using materials that are ubiquitous in the hospital, easy to set up in minutes and well tolerated by the patients. As presented in this case report, it is an effective method to reduce viral spread from patients with positive or suspected yet unconfirmed coronavirus disease 2019 status. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 49-year-old male was admitted to the hospital with a diagnosis of cervical stenosis and a C6-C7 disc herniation

Randomized Trial of Deep Vein Thrombosis Chemoprophylaxis with Bemiparin and Enoxaparin in Patients with Moderate to High Thrombogenic Risk Undergoing Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Procedures.

BACKGROUND: Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a common complication during postoperative convalescence characterized by hypercoagulability, vascular endothelium damage and blood stasis. It increases noticeably in peri/postoperative phases of surgery procedures. Pulmonary embolism secondary to iliofemoral DVT is a frequent cause of death. METHODS: Adult patients scheduled for plastic and reconstructive surgery (PRSx) with moderate to high thrombogenic risk were selected. We evaluated the efficacy and safety of bemiparin compared to enoxaparin as chemoprophylaxis for DVT. Following balanced general

Comparison of V-Y Advancement Flap Versus Lotus Petal Flap for Plastic Reconstruction After Surgery in Case of Vulvar Malignancies: A Retrospective Single Center Experience.

Vulvoperineal defects after demolitive surgery for preneoplastic or malignant vulvar lesions require a reconstruction to restore good sexual functions and to offer a satisfactory cosmetic result. Several techniques of reconstruction have been described in the past, leading to a more conservative and localized treatment. This study retrospectively reviewed patients with primary or recurrent vulvar malignancies that had undergone vulvoperineal reconstruction between 2010 and 2016 using the V-Y advancement flap and the 2 variant of the lotus petal flap (LPF) in terms of surgical outcome and posto

In utero Plastic Surgery in Zurich: Successful Use of Distally Pedicled Random Pattern Transposition Flaps for Definitive Skin Closure during Open Fetal Spina Bifida Repair.

BACKGROUND: One of the intraoperative challenges of fetal spina bifida repair is skin closure when there is an extended skin defect. Thus, we examined whether distally pedicled random pattern transposition flaps (TFs) are a valid option to overcome this problem. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: All patients undergoing in utero repair of spina bifida with application of a TF for back skin closure were analyzed focusing on intraoperative flap characteristics and postoperative flap performance. RESULTS: In 30 (70%) of the 43 fetuses a primary skin closure was achieved, in 5 (12%) a skin substitute was use

Prophylactic plastic surgery closure of neurosurgical scalp incisions reduces the incidence of wound complications in previously-operated patients treated with bevacizumab (Avastin®) and radiation.

Neurosurgical craniotomy, craniectomy, or other trans-galeal interventions are performed for a variety of indications, including the resection of benign or malignant tumors, hematoma evacuation, and for the management of intractable seizure disorders. Despite an overall low complication rate of intervention, wound healing complications such as dehiscence, surgical site infection, and cerebrospinal fluid leak are not uncommon. A retrospective review was performed of all patients who underwent scalp incision closure at a single institution by a single plastic surgeon between 2006 and 2013. Sixty

Understanding the role of plastic and reconstructive surgery in a high-trauma setting: A multicenter study of academic and clinical exposure among Syrian medical students.

INTRODUCTION: Plastic and reconstructive surgery (PRS) is often perceived primarily as cosmetic, shaped by limited medical training exposure and public narratives. In Syria, ongoing conflict has caused high burdens of trauma, burns, and complex injuries, making awareness of PRS's full reconstructive scope critical for career choices, referrals, and patient care. We evaluated how teaching and clinical rotations influence medical students' perceptions of PRS. METHODS: A multicenter cross-sectional study was conducted across three Damascus universities from August to October 2023. A total of 155

The incidence and prevalence of chronic wounds from a major plastic surgery service from a metropolitan city in south western Nigeria: A sixteen-year retrospective review.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic wound presents a burden to the patient due to the effect on their quality of life and cost of care. The exact prevalence is difficult to assess due to insufficient data, different study designs, and deferent study definitions of chronic wounds. There is limited data on the prevalence and the burden of chronic wound in our subregion. This study was therefore carried out to establish the burden of chronic wound in order to document a baseline data for monitoring progress, as well as provide information for advocacy on equitable distribution of resources for wound care.
