Benign Neurogenic Tumors.

Neurogenic tumors arise from cells of the nervous system. These tumors can be found anywhere along the distribution of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system and are categorized based on cell of origin: ganglion cell, paraganglion cell, and nerve sheath cells. Ganglion cell-derived tumors include neuroblastomas, ganglioneuroblastomas, and ganglioneuromas. Paraganglion cell-derived tumors include paragangliomas and pheochromocytomas. Nerve sheath cell-derived tumors include schwannomas (neurilemmomas), neurofibromas, and neurofibromatosis. Most of these are benign; however, they can…

[Alcohol polyneuropathy].

The Alcoholic Polyneuropathy occurs in about 10-30% of alcoholics. It is the second most frequent type of polyneuropathies after the diabetic form. The clinical pattern is a symmetric sensory or symmetric motor sensory manifestation type. In almost all cases there is a pressure pain of the calves. In the beginning the disturbance of the proprioceptive sensation is predominant. Disturbances of the autonomic nervous system deal with the sympathetic as well as the parasympathetic nervous system. Morphologically there is a primary axonal degeneration. A direct toxic influence of the alcohol itself…

The sympathetic nervous response in inflammation.

Over the past decades evidence has accumulated clearly demonstrating a pivotal role for the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) and its neurotransmitters in regulating inflammation. The first part of this review provides the reader with an overview showing that the interaction of the SNS with the immune system to control inflammation is strongly context-dependent (for example, depending on the activation state of the immune cell or neuro-transmitter concentration). In the second part we focus on autoimmune arthritis as a well investigated example for sympathetically controlled inflammation to sho…

The salivary-α-amylase level after stroop test in anxious patients can predict the severity of anxiety.

Individuals with anxiety disorder often exhibit as imbalance in response to stressors. We sought to explore the relationship between physiol … c nervous response in GAD patients, which was mainly manifested as the increase in HRV representing sympathetic nervous system and the decrease in HRV representing vagal nerve activity. Moreover, the basic function of sympathetic-adrenal medulla system was hyperfunctional in GAD patients while theirs reactivity was limited, which showed the more serious the lesion was, the …

Cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator expression in human spinal and sympathetic ganglia.

Cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) is a chloride channel protein, and mutations of its gene cause cystic fibrosis. CFTR is known to be expressed in epithelial cells of the respiratory, digestive and reproductive tracts. It is also present in rat neurons and heart ganglion cells. In humans, it is expressed in the hypothalamus, but has not been identified in other parts of the human nervous system. In this study, immunohistochemistry, double-staining immunofluorescence, in situ hybridization, nested reverse transcription-PCR and relative quantification of real-time PCR an

Central mineralocorticoid receptor blockade improves volume regulation and reduces sympathetic drive in heart failure.

The mineralocorticoid (MC) receptor antagonist spironolactone (SL) improves morbidity and mortality in patients with congestive heart failure (CHF). We tested the hypothesis that the central nervous system actions of SL contribute to its beneficial effects. SL (100 ng/h for 28 days) or ethanol vehicle (VEH) was administered intracerebroventricularly or intraperitoneally to rats with CHF induced by coronary artery ligation (CL) and to SHAM-operated controls. The intracerebroventricular SL treatment prevented the increase in sodium appetite and the decreases in sodium and water excretion observe

Autonomic nervous disorder in motor neuron disease: a study of advanced stage patients.

Autonomic functions were studied in 10 respiratory-support patients with motor neuron disease (MND) at its most advanced stage by means of h … both the Aschner eyeball pressure test and injection of atropine were normal, indicating normal parasympathetic nervous system function. Plasma and urine levels of norepinephrine, epinephrine and their metabolites were almost normal in all 10 patients, as were serum dopamine-beta-hydroxylase levels. [The effectiveness of cervical epidural block for the treatment of status asthmaticus].

Epidural anesthesia is currently used for the operation of patients who have bronchial asthma. We have ascertained the effectiveness of cerv … ized arterial blood pH with decrease in expiratory resistance and (3) stabilization of circulation. Sympathetic nervous system is excited in patients with asthmatic attack. As a result, high concentrations of catecholamines deteriorate general condition of patients. On the other hand, cervical epidural block seems to be effective to prevent hyperactive sympathetic nervous s …

Blood pressure maintenance in hypertensive sympathectomized rats. I. Adrenal medullary catecholamines.

To assess the role of the sympathetic nervous system in the development of genetic hypertension, blood pressure (BP) was recorded in conscious adult Lyon hypertensive (LH) and normotensive (LN) rats that had received daily injections of saline or guanethidine at 1-13 wk of age. Guanethidine abolished the pressor response to tyramine, decreased plasma norepinephrine by greater than 70% and plasma 3,4-dihydroxyphenylglycol by approximately 90%, and did not change plasma epinephrine. Bilateral adrenalectomy further reduced plasma norepinephrine to 8 and 5% of control levels in LH and LN rats, res…

Effects of desipramine hydrochloride on peripheral sympathetic nerve activity.

Tricyclic antidepressants cause orthostatic hypotension and have antiarrhythmic effects that may be partially due to effects on the sympathetic nervous system. We studied the influence of intravenous desipramine hydrochloride on renal (n = 12) and lumbar (n = 5) nerve traffic and mean arterial pressure in alpha-chloralose-anesthetized rabbits with sinoaortic and vagal denervation. Desipramine administration resulted in dose-dependent inhibition of renal and lumbar nerve activity that was markedly reduced or abolished by yohimbine (0.5 mg/kg iv), an alpha 2-blocker that enters the brain rapidly…

Neuropeptides and nasal secretion.

Recent research has disclosed that neurotransmitters and neuropeptides released within the autonomic nervous system exert homeostatic contro … cetylcholine release, augment glandular secretory responses, and have a vasodilatory effect. In the sympathetic nervous system, neuropeptide Y probably functions as a long-acting vasoconstrictor. Integration of sympathetic and parasympathetic influence may regulate the normal nasal cycle, and sensory and parasympathetic defensive reflexes may respond to epithelial and mast …

Is ocular melatonin regulated by the adrenergic system?

There is evidence supporting a role for melatonin as an endogenous agent regulating intraocular pressure, but little is known about whether ocular levels of melatonin are regulated by the sympathetic nervous system, as they are in the rat pineal gland. The effects of topically applied L-timolol, norepinephrine, forskolin, domperidone and pilocarpine on levels of melatonin in regions of rabbit and chicken eyes were determined. None of these drugs altered levels of melatonin in the rabbit iris-ciliary body or in the chicken iris or ciliary body, suggesting that the actions of these drugs were no…

The substance P content of peripheral tissues in several mammals.

Levels of substance P immunoreactivity (SPI) were determined in several skin and mucosal areas, in parts of the sympathetic nervous system, the urinary, biliary and respiratory systems of cats, rabbits and guinea-pigs, and in various skin and mucosal areas of humans by radioimmunoassay. Salient findings are (1) The general distribution pattern of SPI in rabbits was similar to that in rodents. (2) The highest SPI tissue levels were found in the sympathetic nervous system, notably in guinea-pigs. (3) The guinea-pig also had the highest SPI levels in ureter, urinary bladder and bile duct. (4) The…

Neurohumoral mechanisms in hypertension.

Neurohumoral mechanisms operating via the catecholamines are discussed in their relationship to such hypertensive diseases as pheochromocyto … istics may or may not coexist with established essential hypertension with all its features. 6. The sympathetic nervous system is also involved in other types of hypertensive disease. Many patients with renovascular hypertension as well as with primary and secondary hyperaldosteronism also have essential hypertension. Angiotensin II affects the sympathetic nervous system an …
