Feasibility and Utility of an Eye-Tracking Device for Assessing Teachers of Invasive Bedside Procedures.

Patient-related complications from invasive bedside procedures (IBPs) are attributed to the experience and proficiency of the operator. Furthermore, IBP complications by trainees may be due to practice variability and competency among IBP teachers. The use of gaze metrics technology to better understand the behaviors of IBP teachers may aid in the creation of faculty development checklists and, ultimately, reduce procedural complications. Prior research on gaze patterns has focused on the individual performing the procedure, but the goal of this pilot study was to assess gaze behaviors of supe

10 Hz transcranial alternating current stimulation over posterior parietal cortex facilitates tactile temporal order judgment.

The temporal order judgment (TOJ) task has been widely used to investigate spatial attentional bias and the sensitivity of temporal discrimination during the processing of bilateral tactile information. Previous studies have shown that TOJ is impaired in patients who are suffering from chronic pain, stroke, and Parkinson's disease. In addition, studies have indicated that the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) is involved in the TOJ task. However, the neural basis of the TOJ task has not been fully elucidated. To investigate the causal relationship between cortical oscillation and certain behavio

Meningioma can lead to pre-operative cognitive alterations even if localized in sensorimotor areas: A multimodal MRI-neuropsychological study in a series of 46 patients.

Brain tumors are generally associated with cognitive changes. Little is known about cognition in patients with meningioma - a lesion that usually shifts and compresses the brain parenchyma with a low probability of infiltrate it. We investigated the cognitive functioning in a consecutive series of 46 patients with a meningioma in the sensorimotor area in the left (LH, N = 27) or in the right (RH, N = 19) hemisphere. All the patients underwent a pre-operative neuropsychological assessment and structural MRI. Clinical symptoms varied between LH and RH meningioma patients. Impaired performance wa

Deficits in temporal processing correlate with clinical progression in Huntington's disease.

OBJECTIVES: Precise temporal performance is crucial for several complex tasks. Time estimation in the second-to-minutes range-known as interval timing-involves the interaction of the basal ganglia and the prefrontal cortex via dopaminergic-glutamatergic pathways. Patients with Huntington's disease (HD) present deficits in cognitive and motor functions that require fine control of temporal processing. The objective of the present work was to assess temporal cognition through a peak-interval time (PI) production task in patients with HD and its potential correlation with the Unified Huntington's

The relationship between motivation, monetary compensation, and data quality among US- and India-based workers on Mechanical Turk.

In this study, we examined data quality among Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk) workers based in India, and the effect of monetary compensation on their data quality. Recent studies have shown that work quality is independent of compensation rates, and that compensation primarily affects the quantity but not the quality of work. However, the results of these studies were generally based on compensation rates below the minimum wage, and far below a level that was likely to play a practical role in the lives of workers. In this study, compensation rates were set around the minimum wage in India. To

Self-other disturbance in borderline personality disorder: Neural, self-report, and performance-based evidence.

Individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD) display an impoverished sense of self and representations of self and others that shift between positive and negative poles. However, little research has investigated the nature of representational disturbance in BPD. The present study takes a multimodal approach. A card sort task was used to investigate complexity, integration, and valence of self-representation in BPD. Impairment in maintenance of self and other representations was assessed using a personality representational maintenance task. Finally, functional MRI (fMRI) was used to

A reversal learning task detects cognitive deficits in a Dachshund model of late-infantile neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis.

The neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses (NCLs) are autosomal recessive lysosomal storage diseases characterized by progressive neurodegeneration and by accumulation of autofluorescent storage material in the central nervous system and other tissues. One of the most prominent clinical signs of NCL is progressive decline in cognitive function. We previously described a frame shift mutation of TPP1 in miniature long-haired Dachshunds which causes an early-onset form of NCL analogous to classical late-infantile onset NCL (CLN2) in children. Dogs homozygous for the TPP1 mutation exhibit progressive neur

Differential activation patterns of occipital and prefrontal cortices during motion processing: evidence from normal and schizophrenic brains.

Visual motion perception is normally mediated by neural processing in the posterior cortex. Focal damage to the middle temporal area (MT), a posterior extrastriate region, induces motion perception impairment. It is unclear, however, how more broadly distributed cortical dysfunction affects this visual behavior and its neural substrates. Schizophrenia manifests itself in a variety of behavioral and perceptual abnormalities that have proved difficult to understand through a dysfunction of any single brain system. One of these perceptual abnormalities involves impaired motion perception. Motion

Physical load as risk factor for musculoskeletal complaints among tank terminal workers.

In a cross-sectional study, the relationship between physical load and musculoskeletal complaints was examined among operators (n = 77), office workers (n = 52), and miscellaneous workers (n = 15) in a tank terminal company. Information about history of musculoskeletal complaints, individual characteristics, and working conditions in past and present was obtained by a standardized interview. Assessment of physical load was performed by direct observation of awkward postures and forceful exertions during normal activities. Workers filled out a diary regarding the executed tasks during one shift

Learn From Examples: In-Context Learning for Camouflaged Object Detection.

Recently, new paradigms of camouflaged object detection (COD), such as referring COD (Ref-COD) and collaborative COD (Co-COD), have been proposed to enhance task performance. However, there remains a lack of in-depth exploration of how to utilize reference information more effectively. In this paper, we introduce in-context learning camouflaged object detection (ICL-COD) as a novel paradigm of COD, which leverages camouflaged image samples and their corresponding annotations as visual examples to guide the model in better perceiving camouflage and recognizing camouflaged objects. We propose th

Quantum-enhanced generative artificial intelligence: a critical review of classical limitations, complexity barriers, and hybrid quantum-classical architectures.

The rapid commercialization of generative artificial intelligence (AI), along with the maturation of quantum technologies has raised a question: can quantum-powered neural networks become the next major shift in large language model (LLM) technology? This naturally leads to another misconception that quantum systems will replace classical LLMs. In this study, both architectures are compared in a contrastive manner in terms of mathematics. The data reveals that identical dynamics that help classical systems learn natural language distributions constrain its ability to use efficient sampling of

In Vivo Kinetic and Kinematic Analysis of Healthy Iliotibial Band Biomechanics.

The iliotibial (IT) band is a complex structure of connective tissue with proximal origins at the tensor fasciae latae and gluteus maximus, with a distal insertion on the tibia at Gerdy's tubercle. Although there is established knowledge of IT band anatomy, its biomechanical function during active motion is poorly defined to date due to experimental challenges in the direct measurement of IT band function. In this study, we applied shear wave tensiometry, ultrasound imaging, and motion capture to assess the structure-function relationship of the IT band during a battery of functional tasks. We

Turing Jest: Distributional Semantics and One-Line Jokes.

Humor is an essential aspect of human experience, yet surprisingly, little is known about how we recognize and understand humorous utterances. Most theories of humor emphasize the role of incongruity detection and resolution (e.g., frame-shifting), as well as cognitive capacities like Theory of Mind and pragmatic reasoning. In multiple preregistered experiments, we ask whether and to what extent exposure to purely linguistic input can account for the human ability to recognize one-line jokes and identify their entailments. We find that GPT-3, a large language model (LLM) trained on only langua

Attention attracts action in healthy participants: An insight into optic ataxia?

Patients with optic ataxia following lesions to superior parts of the posterior parietal cortex make large errors when reaching to targets in the peripheral visual field. These errors are characterised by a contraction, or attraction, towards the point of fixation. These patients also have a reduced ability to allocate visual attention away from the point of fixation, but it is unclear whether the core symptom of misreaching is related to these attentional problems. In neurologically-intact adults, we tested the effect of an attention-demanding dual-task performed at fixation upon visually-gui

Reaching a moveable visual target: dissociations in brain tumour patients.

Damage to the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) can lead to Optic Ataxia (OA), in which patients misreach to peripheral targets. Recent research suggested that the PPC might be involved not only in simple reaching tasks toward peripheral targets, but also in changing the hand movement trajectory in real time if the target moves. The present study investigated whether patients with a lesion arising from operation for prefrontal, premotor or parietal tumours are selectively impaired in three experimental pointing conditions: (i) pointing to peripheral targets, (ii) pointing to fixatable targets, a

A multi-task learning approach for the extraction of single-trial evoked potentials.

Evoked potentials (EPs) are of great interest in neuroscience, but their measurement is difficult as they are embedded in background spontaneous electroencephalographic (EEG) activity which has a much larger amplitude. The widely used averaging technique requires the delivery of a large number of identical stimuli and yields only an "average" EP which does not allow the investigation of the possible variability of single-trial EPs. In the present paper, we propose the use of a multi-task learning method (MTL) for the simultaneous extraction of both the average and the N single-trial EPs from N

Adductor spasmodic dysphonia and muscular tension dysphonia: acoustic analysis of sustained phonation and reading.

Acoustic phonatory events were identified in 10 women diagnosed with adductor spasmodic dysphonia (ADSD) and compared to 5 women and 5 men diagnosed with muscle tension dysphonia (MTD). The three acoustic parameters examined during sustained vowel production and reading included phonatory breaks, aperiodicity, and frequency shifts. Intra- and intermeasurer correlations showed high reliability for the measures. Findings indicated that those with ADSD produced a greater number of aberrant acoustic events than those with MTD. The results suggested that: (1) only those with ADSD show evidence of p

Direct current stimulation modulates prefrontal cell activity and behaviour without inducing seizure-like firing.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has garnered significant interest for its potential to enhance cognitive functions and as a therapeutic intervention in various cognitive disorders. However, the clinical application of tDCS has been hampered by significant variability in its cognitive outcomes. Furthermore, the widespread use of tDCS has raised concerns regarding its safety and efficacy, particularly in light of our limited understanding of its underlying neural mechanisms at the cellular level. We still do not know 'where', 'when' and 'how' tDCS modulates information encoding by

Profiles of Extra-Task Workload Among Clinical Nurses and Associations With Narrative Cognitive Ability: A Latent Profile Analysis.

BACKGROUND: In addition to providing direct care, clinical nurses often undertake teaching, research, quality improvement and care coordination responsibilities. However, whether these extra-task demands form distinct workload patterns, and how such patterns relate to narrative cognitive ability, remains unclear. AIM: To identify distinct extra-task workload patterns among clinical nurses and compare narrative cognitive ability across the identified profiles. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 1081 clinical nurses at a tertiary general hospital in Henan Province, China, be

Task-oriented exercise effects on walking and corticospinal excitability in multiple sclerosis: protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a degenerative disease of the central nervous system (CNS) that disrupts walking function and results in other debilitating symptoms. This study compares the effects of 'task-oriented exercise' against 'generalized resistance and aerobic exercise' and a 'stretching control' on walking and CNS function in people with MS (PwMS). We hypothesize that task-oriented exercise will enhance walking speed and related neural changes to a greater extent than other exercise approaches. METHODS: This study is a single-blinded, three-arm randomized controlled trial con
