Variations in the Visual Probe Paradigms for Attention Bias Modification for Substance Use Disorders.

Advances in experimental psychology have provided evidence for the presence of attentional and approach biases in individuals with substance use disorders. Traditionally, reaction time tasks, such as the Stroop or the Visual Probe Task, are commonly used in the assessment of attention biases. The Visual Probe Task has been criticized for its poor reliability, and other research has highlighted that variations remain in the paradigms adopted. However, a gap remains in the published literature, as there have not been any prior studies that have reviewed stimulus timings for different substance u

Visual processing speed as a marker of immaturity in lexical but not sublexical dyslexia.

A visual attention span (VAS) deficit has been widely reported in the Developmental Dyslexia (DD) literature, however, consensus regarding what underlies this problem and the nature of its relationship with reading ability remains elusive. Thirty-two children with DD (15 females) were compared with 23 age matched (12 females) and 17 reading matched controls (9 females) on the combined Theory of Visual Attention (CombiTVA) paradigm with traditional letter and novel symbol conditions. The DD group performed more slowly than the age matched controls in terms of processing speed, but similarly to

Getting "Stuck" in the Future or the Past: Relationships between Dimensions of Time Perspective, Executive Functions, and Repetitive Negative Thinking in Anxiety.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Anxiety disorders are associated with impairments in several aspects of cognitive processing. In this study we investigated three such aspects, i.e., time perspective, repetitive negative thinking (worry and rumination), and executive functioning, in persons with anxiety disorders compared to healthy controls and examined the influence of negative past and negative future time perspective and executive functioning on worry and rumination. METHOD: Thirty-six psychiatric outpatients with anxiety disorders (mean age = 30.83, SD = 11.74; 30 females and 6 males) and 44 healthy cont

Pathological buying symptoms are associated with distortions in judging elapsed time.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Pathological buying (PB) is often assumed to be related to deficits in impulse control. Distortions in judging elapsed time are one component of behavioral impulsivity. This study was set out to examine the hypothesis that PB propensity is associated with distorted time perception, such that time is perceived to pass more slowly. METHODS: The study is based on a convenience sample of 78 adults. Symptom severity of PB and related problems/disorders (substance use, borderline, depression, mania, and obsessive-compulsive disorder) as well as four dimensions of trait impulsiv…

Increased deficit of visual attention span with development in Chinese children with developmental dyslexia.

It has been suggested that orthographic transparency and age changes may affect the relationship between visual attention span (VAS) deficit and reading difficulty. The present study explored the developmental trend of VAS in children with developmental dyslexia (DD) in Chinese, a logographic language with a deep orthography. Fifty-seven Chinese children with DD and fifty-four age-matched normal readers participated. The visual 1-back task was adopted to examine VAS. Phonological and morphological awareness tests, and reading tests in single-character and sentence levels were used for reading

Impaired peripheral reaching and on-line corrections in patient DF: Optic ataxia with visual form agnosia.

An influential model of vision suggests the presence of two visual streams within the brain: a dorsal occipito-parietal stream which mediates action and a ventral occipito-temporal stream which mediates perception. One of the cornerstones of this model is DF, a patient with visual form agnosia following bilateral ventral stream lesions. Despite her inability to identify and distinguish visual stimuli, DF can still use visual information to control her hand actions towards these stimuli. These observations have been widely interpreted as demonstrating a double dissociation from optic ataxia, a

Temporal coding in the auditory cortex.

Speech is a complex acoustic signal showing a quasiperiodic structure at several timescales. Integrated neural signals recorded in the cortex also show periodicity at different timescales. In this chapter we outline the neural mechanisms that potentially allow the auditory cortex to segment and encode continuous speech. This chapter focuses on how the human auditory cortex uses the temporal structure of the acoustic signal to extract phonemes and syllables, the two major constituents of connected speech. We argue that the quasiperiodic structure of collective neural activity in auditory cortex

Motion-induced blindness continues outside visual awareness and without attention.

Visual phenomena demonstrating striking perceptual disappearances of salient stimuli have fascinated researchers because of their utility in identifying neural processes that underlie subjective visibility and invisibility. Motion-induced blindness (MIB) is appealing for such purposes because it, like a class of ostensibly related paradigms such as binocular rivalry, features periods of unequivocal subjective disappearances despite constant physical stimulation. It remains unclear, however, exactly how the mechanisms that cause MIB are related to subjectively observed fluctuations in visual aw

[Circadian regulation of sleep-wake cycles and food anticipation].

The circadian clock is crucial for efficient physiological function and drives the temporal regulation of the sleep-wake state, metabolism, and behavior. The timing of food intake and the accompanying behavior are both controlled by the internal clock, which is located in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) of the anterior hypothalamus. The SCN is considered as the master clock because the circadian rhythms for most physiological and behavioral processes are terminated after SCN ablation. The molecular framework of circadian oscillations can be best studied in the SCN. A "core" set of circadian

A dual-route perspective on poor reading in a regular orthography: evidence from phonological and orthographic lexical decisions.

Impairments of the lexical and the nonlexical reading route were examined for German-speaking dyslexic readers by measuring accuracy and speed of phonological and orthographic lexical decisions. Different from English-based findings, we found little difficulty with the phonological distinction between pseudohomophones and nonwords, but a major difficulty with the orthographic distinction between words and pseudohomophones. Subtyping identified pure surface dyslexia cases but no case of pure phonological dyslexia. Dyslexic speed impairments were traced to three loci in the dual-route model: an

Word length effect in early reading and in developmental dyslexia.

Vocal reaction times were measured in Italian dyslexics and in proficient readers while they read single words. Three groups of control participants (for a total of 79) were tested. All were in the first, second or third grade of elementary school. Nine third graders with a low level of reading ability when assessed by standard reading procedures were also tested. Results indicated that vocal RTs of control participants were faster and less sensitive to word length as a function of age; also, there was a particularly marked change between first and second graders. Dyslexics' vocal RTs and erro

Dynamic, stochastic, and topological aspects of polyrhythmic performance.

Previous research on polyrhythmic performance can be broadly summarized in terms of 2 classes of models: timekeeper models and nonlinear dynamical models. In the former approach, research has been focused on patterns of covariance among time intervals, and in the latter approach, the concentration has been on pattern (in)stability and the spatiotemporal properties of oscillating limbs. It is suggested that one can achieve a more comprehensive theory that incorporates the strengths of each of these approaches by endowing timekeeper models with nonlinear dynamics or by endowing nonlinear oscilla

The disorder-salient stroop effect as a measure of psychopathology in eating disorders.

OBJECTIVES: The aim was to assess, using sophisticated experimental methods, the amount of interference on a Stroop task in patients with eating disorders, under conditions of blocked and mixed stimulus presentation. METHODS: Patients with eating disorders and non-patients named the color in which a word was displayed. Words came from an experimental category (food/eating, weight/shape, "emotion," or affectively neutral word) or from a matched set of unrelated control words. Color-naming latencies were compared in a blocked condition, with words from just one set in each block, and in a mixed

Effects of unseen stimuli on reaction times to seen stimuli in monkeys with blindsight.

In three macaque monkeys with unilateral removal of primary visual cortex and in one unoperated monkey, we measured reaction times to a visual target that was presented at a lateral eccentricity of 20 degrees in the normal, left, visual hemifield. When an additional stimulus was presented at the corresponding position in the right hemifield (hemianopic in three of the monkeys), it significantly slowed the reaction time to the left target if it preceded it by delays from 100-500 msec. The most effective delay depended on the particular experimental paradigm and perhaps on the experience of the

[Neurocognitive rehabilitation of hemi-inattention in patients with a right hemispheric lesion].

The incapacity to focus attention in the direction contralateral to cerebral lesion (hemi-inattention) significantly affects the patient's day-to-day behaviour. Recent studies have demonstrated that although spontaneous recovery may occur during the weeks immediately after ictus, a significant number of patients continue to suffer from this disorder in a chronic manner. The paper describes a rehabilitation programme which has proved to be selectively effective in reducing hemi-inattention in the majority of patients persistently affected by the disorder. The results indicate a) that improvemen

Do anticholinergics affect reaction time? A possible impact on the course of rehabilitation.

OBJECTIVE: To assess if oxybutynin and tolterodine have an effect on simple reaction time in healthy volunteers. METHODS: Simple reaction time was evaluated before and 90 minutes after the oral administration of oxybutynin and tolterodine in a cross-over design. Twenty seven healthy volunteers, aged 26 to 48 years, were included in the study. The electromyographic activity of the flexor digitorum superficialis muscle that was used for the response was recorded, and premotor time was measured. RESULTS: The mean age of the study group was 33.1 ± 7.4 years. Mean premotor times before oxybutynin
