The use of hydroxyapatite toothpaste to prevent dental caries.

Dissolution of hydroxyapatite from the tooth structure at low pH can lead to the irreversible destruction of enamel and dentin, which if left untreated can result in pain and tooth loss. Hydroxyapatite toothpastes contain hydroxyapatite particles in micro- or nanocrystalline form that have been shown to deposit and restore demineralized enamel surfaces. As such, they are currently being explored as a fluoride-free anti-caries agent. This narrative review article aims to summarize the recent findings of the research investigating the remineralization potential of HAP toothpaste in vitro, in sit…

Postextraction Alveolar Preservation and Use of the Crown of the Extracted Tooth as a Temporary Restoration.

Ranging from the extraction of teeth from anterior sector commitment to the loss of bone and soft tissues, alveolar preservation is a regenerative technique that employs biomaterials that induce the preservation of bone tissue and minimize resorption. Placement of provisional restorations at the defect site maintains the stability of the soft tissues and aesthetics at which the definitive restoration is found. The objective of this clinical case was alveolar preservation postextraction of the anterior tooth that presented a coronal fracture, placing the clinical crown of the extracted tooth as

Managing Ridge Resorption After Tooth Extraction Using Partial Extraction Therapy.

Achieving successful long-term esthetic outcomes in implant dentistry requires that the height and width of the facial or buccal alveolar bone wall and, subsequently, the peri-implant tissues be maintained. Partial extraction therapy (PET) can be used to reduce the risk of facio-lingual collapse after tooth loss and improve the preservation of alveolar bone height and blood supply. This article demonstrates the use of PET for treatment of a hopeless tooth in the esthetic zone. After removal of the fractured maxillary central incisor, an implant was placed and restored with excellent esthetic, …

Prevalence of Periodontitis and Methodological Aspects of the 2018 EFP/AAP Classification-The Study of Health in Pomerania (SHIP-TREND).

AIM: To estimate the prevalence of periodontitis and highlight methodological issues using the Application of the 2018 Periodontal Status Classification to Epidemiological Survey Data (ACES) framework. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used data from the population-based Study of Health in Pomerania (SHIP-TREND; age 20-84 years). Periodontal status was recorded using a half-mouth protocol. We estimated the prevalence of periodontitis, evaluated changes in the assignment of stages to combinations of available complexity factors, associated periodontal status with 7-year tooth loss and illustrated agre…

Restoration of Normal Occlusion Suppresses the Risk of Dementia.

Tooth loss is associated with a progressive decline in cognitive ability. Although occlusal support after tooth loss using dentures may reverse this effect, the underlying mechanisms are unclear, hampering improved evidence-based dentistry for at-risk patients. The current experiments examined the associations of tooth loss and restoration of occlusal support with neuropathology and cognitive decline in a mice model of Alzheimer's disease (AD). A triple-mutant knock-in mouse model of AD (AppNL-G-F mice), and a single-mutant knock-in control line, (AppNL mice), were divided into three subgroups…

Trends of Oral Health Status of Older Adults by Immigration Status in the United States: 1999-2018.

INTRODUCTION: This study examined oral health trends of older immigrants in the US from 1999 to 2018 and disparities between immigrants and non-immigrants across different races/ethnicities. METHODS: Data were from the 1999-2018 National Health and Nutrition Survey (NHANES). Outcome variables were self-reported poor oral health and significant tooth loss (i.e., < 20 permanent teeth). Participants were categorized into three groups as US natives, naturalized citizens, or noncitizen residents. The analytical sample comprised 13,424 older adults (ages 60+), including 10,087 US natives, 2280 natu…

Applying oral panoramic radiography to health screening of the aging population: cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between adverse oral conditions and intrinsic capacity deficiency.

BACKGROUND: Intrinsic capacity (IC) and oral health are crucial for healthy aging and are linked to future adverse health outcomes. Panorami … Trend study (2021-2024) were used. Adverse oral conditions (caries, residual roots, periodontitis, tooth loss, and functional impairments) were assessed by manual radiograph reading. IC levels were measured at each visit, encompassing locomotor, cognitive, psychological, vitality, and sensory functions. Cross-sectional analysis used logistic regression, and …

Non-syndromic generalised hypotaurodontism in a case of Stage III Grade C periodontitis.

Taurodontism is a rare dental morphological anomaly characterised by an unusual increase in the vertical height of the pulpal chamber along with an apical displacement of the pulpal floor. The tooth lack constriction at the cementoenamel junction is mimicking a bull tooth. Taurodontism is usually observed as an isolated tooth aberration. However, it can also be associated with specific syndromes such as Down's syndrome, amelogenesis imperfecta, Klinefelter syndrome, Tricho-Dento-Osseous syndrome, Mohr syndrome, Prader-Labhart-Willi syndrome, Ellis van Creveld syndrome and Lowe syndrome. Orthodontic - Surgical management in a Class II case with idiopathic root resorption.

Patients with root resorption and malocclusion can benefit from orthodontic treatment with or without surgery. However, orthodontics has a r … ion the first month. The clinical outcome was satisfactory with complete clinical resolution and no tooth loss. This surgery approach allowed an 'en bloc' tooth movement and induced an increased bone remodelling, which resulted in an accelerated tooth movement. The reduction of treatment time was beneficial and no aggravation of the root resorption was seen.

Endodontic treatment in submerged roots: a case report.

Alveolar ridge resorption has long been considered an unavoidable consequence of tooth extraction. While the extent and pattern of resorption is variable among individuals, there is a progressive loss of ridge contour as a result of physiologic bone remodeling. Even today, with best modalities of tooth preservation, there is a group of elderly individuals who do not benefit from modern preventive practices and who now present a dilemma in terms of maintaining the masticatory apparatus necessary for nutrition. Even with excellent dental care, such patients experience abrasion of the natural toot

Orthodontic rehabilitation for anterior teeth lost due to trauma with crowding malocclusion.

Herein, we describe orthodontic management for an adolescent girl with traumatic loss of the upper central incisors and maxillary protrusion. The central incisors were immediately replaced and fixed with application of a semi-rigid splint for 12 days, then endodontically treated. Severe root resorption and degeneration of periodontal tissue were noted after 4 years and the teeth were extracted, while the patient had also developed maxillary protrusion with severe crowding in the lower arch. The treatment objectives were to close the spaces by mesial movement of the buccal segment in the upper

Auditory function in children with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease.

The peripheral manifestations of the inherited neuropathies are increasingly well characterized, but their effects upon cranial nerve function are not well understood. Hearing loss is recognized in a minority of children with this condition, but has not previously been systemically studied. A clear understanding of the prevalence and degree of auditory difficulties in this population is important as hearing impairment can impact upon speech/language development, social interaction ability and educational progress. The aim of this study was to investigate auditory pathway function, speech perce

Pericardial actinomycosis.

A man in his 50s, with a history of night sweats and weight loss, presented acutely with dyspnoea and chest pain. Imaging revealed right middle lobe consolidation and a large pericardial effusion. The diagnosis of actinomycosis was made using endobronchial ultrasound-guided sampling from the pericardial effusion. An orthopantomogram demonstrated that the source was a large cavity in the left lower wisdom tooth. This tooth was extracted before the completion of his antibiotic course, and the patient made a full recovery. Cardiac actinomycosis is rare, and there are few case reports describing e

Clinical Approach to External Cervical Resorption in the Anterior Teeth: A Case Report Study.

External cervical resorption (ECR) is a pathology that is difficult to diagnose early, and because it is often confused with root decay, it can be treated inadequately and even result in tooth loss. Currently, treatment does not have a defined protocol, being widely varied in the literature. This article proposes that cases of ECR should be treated individually, following different criteria, based on aspects related to the patient and the tooth involved. Furthermore, this work illustrates, through a case report, how a patient can present unique characteristics that require treatment to be case…

Transreplantation:
An alternative for periodontally hopeless teeth.

The periodontal therapy of severely damaged teeth that have advanced bone loss, a significant degree of mobility, and often tooth migration and elongation, frequently exposes the dental clinician to difficult decisions regarding the appropriate therapy for the patient. Extensive rehabilitation, with the replacement of periodontally hopeless teeth, has biologic, prognostic, and financial limitations. A possible alternative in such cases is the transreplantation of periodontally hopeless teeth. Ankylosis of the tooth is induced by appropriate extraoral pretreatment and thus the mobility disappea

Stem cell-based therapy in periodontal regeneration: a systematic review and meta-analysis of clinical studies.

BACKGROUND: Periodontitis is a common and chronic inflammatory disease characterized by irreversible destruction of the tooth surrounding tissues, especially intrabony defects, which eventually lead to tooth loss. In recent years, stem cell-based therapy for periodontitis has been gradually applied to the clinic, but whether stem cell-based therapy plays a positive role in periodontal regeneration is unclear at present. METHODS: The clinical studies related to the evaluation of mesenchymal stem cells for periodontal regeneration in PubMed, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled trials (CENTR…

Immediate Implant and Customized Healing Abutment Promotes Tissues Regeneration: A 5-Year Clinical Report.

Significant alveolar bone resorption follows tooth extraction. Immediate implant placement alone is not sufficient to prevent this phenomenon. The present study aims at reporting the clinical and radiologic outcome of an immediate implant with a custom healing abutment. In this clinical case, a fractured upper first premolar was replaced by an immediate implant and a customized healing abutment designed on the perimeter of the extractive alveolus. After 3 months, the implant was restored. The facial and interdental soft tissue was maintained with appreciable success after 5 years. The pre-and
