Female LSH hamsters infected with Treponema pallidum subsp, endemicum before pregnancy or during early pregnancy transmit a form of syphilis to the fetus that is similar to human congenital syphilis. The offspring develops rhinitis, skin rash, failure to thrive, and hepatosplenomegaly. T. pallidum is detectable in their livers, spleens, and nasal secretions. Immunoglobulin M antibodies are detected in the serum.

The occurring resurgence of endemic treponematoses warrant the renewal of WHO mass campaigns. These various infections, pinta, yaws, bejel and endemic syphilis, are due to a treponema apparently identical to the venereal syphilis one. These different treponematoses do act upon epidemiology of venereal syphilis. The recent outbreak of treponematoses justify the current researches in the development of a treponemal vaccine.

In case of progressive paralysis of the insane, repeated recurrence can be explained only by the survival of pathogens inspite of optimal therapeutic conditions, the persistence of the pathogens being possibly produced by turning of the treponemas into L-type forms. The polyethylene glycol precipitation method can be used to detect immune complexes in the sera of rabbits experimentally infected with Treponema pallidum. Immune complexes are present in the serum of rabbits infected either intravenously or intratesticularly and only when syphilitic lesions were present. Immune complexes were not observed in the serum of rabbits infected intradermally with T. pallidum.

A serologic survey on 196 blood samples (20% of the present population) in a Bi-Aka pygmean population in Central African Republic. The survey demonstrated the frequency of the unquestionably positive sera: 79.4% of the studied sera. The existence of 78.5% positive sera in children and the observation of yaws lesions suggest a massive and very probably endemic infestation with Treponema pertenue.

The association of adverse pregnancy outcome with Treponema pallidum, Neisseria gonorrhoeae and herpes simplex infections is well known and specific recommendations for management have been formulated. However, other agents that are not so well known can be transmitted sexually and threaten an otherwise healthy pregnancy. We describe a 17-year-old man who developed penile annular and scrotal eczematoid syphilids with penile chancre redux. Dermoscopy showed linear-irregular and hairpin vessels with white scales in annular lesions. Histopathology displayed psoriasiform hyperplasia with perivascular lymphoplasmacytic dermal infiltrate. Rapid plasma reagin and Treponema pallidumparticle agglutination assays were positive. The lesions disappeared after intramuscular benzathine penicillin.

Syphilis is associated with increased human immunodeficiency virus acquisition and sexual transmission; we examined impact on human immunodeficiency virus mother-to-child transmission among mother-infant pairs enrolled in the India Six-Week Extended-Dose Nevirapine study. Maternal syphilis, diagnosed serologically using Venereal Disease Research Laboratory titer plus Treponema Pallidum Hemagglutination Assay, was associated with 2.5-fold greater risk.

The incidence of neurosyphilis has been increasing since AIDS has appeared but acute gummatous necrotizing progression is so far exceptional. We report a second case of "quaternary neurosyphilis" in a 29-year-old patient without serologic nor CT scan evidence of treponema. Diagnosing neurosyphilis is particularly difficult in HIV-1 infected patients, specially in spirochetes-poor injuries.

Syphilis is a multisystem infection caused by Treponema pallidum, a common sexually transmitted bacterium. The different stages and associated signs of syphilis are well characterized. We present an atypical case of syphilis in a 27-year-old female with hepatitis and gastritis. The diagnostic criteria for syphilitic hepatitis and gastritis are discussed here, along with endoscopic and clinical findings, treatment, and a brief literature review.

Yaws is an infectious, non-venereal disease of the tropical countries, which is caused by Treponema pertenue. Gangosa and goundou were seen commonly in cases of yaws in Africa, particularly in the early part of this century. After successful WHO mass treatment campaigns, these conditions are rarely seen now. A case of yaws with gangosa, goundou, and a nasopharyngeal carcinoma is presented here for its rarity.

The incidence of yaws in 533 pygmies from the Central African Republic was surveyed. It appeared that there is still an impressive incidence of yaws in pygmy children who have poor hygiene. Laboratory investigations showed that the Treponema pallidum hemagglutination assay is often negative during the first stage of the disease, while the fluorescent treponemal antibody absorption test is positive and, thus, more sensitive.

Syphilis is an increasingly common infectious disease caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. Atypical clinical presentations occur that may delay its diagnosis and treatment. Regional enlargement of lymph nodes is seen in both primary and secondary stages. Such lymph nodes very rarely become abscesses. Antibiotics should be administered in this situation; however, if this fails, the lymph nodes should be surgically excised.

We retrospectively analyzed the Venereal Disease Research Laboratory test, Treponema pallidum particle agglutination test, and toluidine red unheated serum test (TRUST) in 41 cases of HIV-negative neurosyphilis and 34 non-neurologic syphilitic patient and found that serum-TRUST titers could be the indication of lumbar puncture in syphilitic patients and a reactive cerebrospinal fluid-TRUST is considered diagnostic to neurosyphilis.

Endemic treponematoses including yaws, bejel, pinta are distinguished from venereal syphilis on the basis of epidemiological characteristics and clinical manifestations. They cannot be differentiated by morphological and serological methods. A few minor genetic differences have been identified among the subspecies (Treponema pallidum sp. pallidum, pertenue, endemicum, carateum). Although penicillin therapy is effective, these infectious diseases have yet to be eliminated.

Co-infection of Cryptococcal meningitis and syphilis is rare. We report the first case of coinfection with cryptococcus neoformans and treponema pallidum in Dakar. There was a 41 yearold senegalese man with HIV2 infection despite a CD4 count of 50 /mm3. The patient have had the history of precedent genital ulcerations and trush.
