The patients with pulmonary tuberculosis suffer from hepatic dysfunction due to both hepatotoxic affection with anti-TB drugs and other factors (hypoxia, antioxidant deficiency, intoxication). Therefore, the aim of the research was to study the markers of cytolytic and cholestatic syndromes in cases of hepatic dysfunction in the first diagnosed patients with pulmonary tuberculosis before treatment and in two months of treatment with first-line antituberculous drugs. Three groups of persons were examined: the first group of almost healthy donors (control) - 31 persons. Also, 62 patients were ex

A 19-year-old male patient was observed due to having central diabetes insipidus (DI) for five years. He had a history of smoking 5-10 cigarettes a day for two years, but stopped smoking from the last month. The computerized tomography revealed thin-walled cystic lesions in different sizes more dominantly in the upper lobes and consolidated areas in the left upper and lower lobes. The wedge resection from the right lower lobe revealed pulmonary langerhans cell histiocytosis. Follow-up acid-fast bacteria (AFB) examinations revealed (+++) and antituberculous treatment was started. On the 40th da

BACKGROUND: Treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) focuses on microbiological cure and radiological improvement. However, many patients develop pulmonary impairment after the completion of anti-tubercular therapy (ATT), which affects their quality of life (QoL).
AIM AND OBJECTIVE: To study the occurrence and severity of pulmonary impairment after tuberculosis (PIAT), risk factors associated with development of PIAT and QoL after development of PIAT.
METHODOLOGY: 146 eligible PTB patients, who completed their ATT during January 2013 to December 2013 at National Institute of TB and Respirat

BACKGROUND: Questionnaire and spirometry were applied to post-tuberculosis indigenous and non-indigenous individuals from Dourados, Brazil, to investigate the prevalence of chronic respiratory symptoms and pulmonary dysfunction.
METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study in cured tuberculosis individuals as reported in the National System on Reportable Diseases (SINAN) from 2002 to 2012.
RESULTS: One hundred and twenty individuals were included in the study and the prevalence of chronic respiratory symptoms was 45% (95% CI, 34-59%). Respiratory symptoms included cough (28%), sputum (23%), whe

Tuberculosis and sarcoidosis share similar histopathological findings. An aetiological connection between these diseases has been discussed. We report a case of pulmonary sarcoidosis, which occurred shortly after an isoniazid (INH)-resistant spinal tuberculosis was diagnosed which was suspected to be a miliary tuberculosis. This report illustrates the need to sensitise clinicians to two possible important causes of lung parenchyma alterations under tuberculostatic therapy.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis is classified as either pulmonary or extra-pulmonary (EPTB). While much focus has been paid to pulmonary tuberculosis, EPTB has received scant attention. Moreover, EPTB is viewed as one wastebasket diagnosis, as "the other" which is not pulmonary.
METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study of all patients treated for EPTB in the state of Texas between January 2000 and December 2005, who had no pulmonary disease. Clinical and epidemiological factors were abstracted from electronic records of the Report of Verified Case of Tuberculosis. The long-term outcome, which i

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of tuberculosis remains difficult. This study aimed to assess performance of interferon-gamma release assay (IGRA) in diagnosis of active tuberculosis (ATB) with pulmonary and extrapulmonary involvements, and to determine the diagnostic role of IGRA (T-SPOT.TB) and tuberculin skin test (TST) in BCG-vaccinated population.
METHODS AND FINDINGS: Two hundred twenty-six ATB suspects were recruited and examined with T-SPOT.TB. Among them, fifty-two and seventy-six subjects were simultaneously tested by TST with 5TU or 1TU of purified protein derivative (PPD). The sensitivi

BACKGROUND: The early definitive diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) is important for control of the disease in the community. We performed this study to evaluate the additional gain of post-bronchoscopy sputum in the diagnosis of pulmonary TB.
METHODS: Bronchoscopy and bronchoalveolar lavage were performed for 126 patients suspected of pulmonary TB who either had 3 negative sputum smears for acid-fast bacilli or could not expectorate. After bronchoscopy the patients were asked to give sputum samples for 3 consecutive days. All of the obtained specimens were investigated for Mycobacteriu

Post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis is usually a sequel to visceral leishmaniasis. A 25-year-old woman presented with hypopigmented maculopapular lesions all over the body for the past 4 years without any previous history of visceral leishmaniasis. She was on treatment for leprosy and pulmonary tuberculosis for the past 2 months, but did not show any improvement. Investigations confirmed that she had post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis associated with pulmonary tuberculosis and HIV-1 infection. She was started on treatment for the triad of diseases, and showed improvement.

BACKGROUND: Few if any studies of the association between pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) and lung function loss have had access to premorbid lung function values.
METHODS: Using a retrospective cohort design, the study recruited employed South African gold miners who had undergone a pulmonary function test (PFT) between January 1995 and August 1996. The 'exposed' group comprised 185 miners treated for pulmonary TB after the initial PFT and the 'unexposed' group comprised 185 age-matched miners without TB. All participants had a follow-up PFT between April and June 2000. The outcome of interest w

The aim of the present study was to describe the clinical, biological and the chest-X ray presentations of newly diagnosed pulmonary tuberculosis. A retrospective study of 200 patients was performed from January to October 2004 in the respiratory diseases unit of Dakar's University Teaching Hospital. Among the 200 cases, 140 (70%) were male, giving a sex ratio of 2.3. The mean age of our patients was 35.5 years (range: 14-81 years). The group age of 20 to 39 years was the most affected (55,5% of patients). The median diagnostic delay was 4 months (range: 7 days to 2 years). Haemoptysis reveale

Multifocal skeletal tuberculosis is defined as osteoarticular lesions that occur simultaneously at two or more locations and is generally associated with disseminated disease. Although involvement of bones accounts for 1 to 5% of all tuberculosis cases, multifocal involvement of the skeleton is extremely rare. We present a case of active pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) with vertebral and rib involvement and multiple hypodense lytic lesions accompanied by a paravertebral mass lesion. In the differential diagnosis, metastases, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, chordoma sarcoidosis and rare spinal infectio

Paragonimiasis is an important cause of pulmonary disease worldwide. Infection in humans mainly occurs by ingestion of raw or undercooked freshwater crabs or crayfish. The disease is well known in endemic regions of Asian countries, where culturally based methods of food preparation foster human transmission. Three patients with clinical and radiological features compatible with pulmonary tuberculosis had been treated for tuberculosis without remedy despite an inability to demonstrate acid fast bacilli in sputum smears. All patients had history of ingestion of raw crabs and crayfish. The confi

Pneumothorax is an important and dangerous complication of pulmonary tuberculosis. Forty-six pneumothorax cases complicated with active pulmonary tuberculosis at National Chiba-Higashi Hospital were studied retrospectively. From Jan. 1987 to Dec. 1997, we experienced 3611 patients with pulmonary tuberculosis, and among them 46 patients (18-90 years old, 38 males and 8 females) had pneumothorax. On admission, 33 out of 46 cases (71.7%) were smear positive by sputum examination of mycobacteria and 41 out of 46 cases (89.1%) had cavitary lesions on chest X-ray. Eleven cases had mild pneumothorax,

Coombs' positive hemolytic anemia is exceedingly rare in tuberculosis. We herein report a patient with tuberculosis associated with Coombs' positive hemolytic anemia that was responded to antituberculosis therapy. She was admitted to the hospital because of recent-onset fatigue, weakness, nonproductive cough, pallor and scleral jaundice. Coombs positive hemolytic anemia and pulmoner tuberculosis was diagnosed. Following antituberculosis therapy, laboratory and clinical finding related to autoimmune hemolytic anemia disappeared.
