In order to provide detailed documentation of faculty and staff experiences of perceived mistreatment, this article reports the findings of an institutional survey of mistreatment. From a random sample of 1,585 (11%) of one university's workforce, 810 (51%) responses were received. Of the total responses, 187 (23%) met criteria used to define cases of perceived workplace mistreatment. Equal proportions of women and men reported incidents of mistreatment. Over a 2-month period, five cases of serogroup C meningococcal disease occurred in Iowa City, Iowa. Two patients were unacquainted university students who had independently visited another university with endemic meningococcal disease. Medial meatal fibrosis is an uncommon but surgically treatable cause of conductive hearing loss. A review of 10 years experience with this entity at The University of Western Ontario revealed a total of 15 cases involving nine patients. Each of them was treated by one of four otologists. Degloving injuries are severe and frequently underestimated lesions. In a retrospective study, 65 patients treated between 1985 and 1991 were reviewed. Therapy consisted of surgical exploration as soon after injury as possible, with defatting of the avulsed skin and its replacement on the most functionally important sites. The remaining raw areas were covered with split skin grafts (SSG). This technique reduced morbidity, hospital stay and work incapacity, as compared with patients treated by other methods.

Twenty four patients were evaluated for short stature at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, Nigeria, over a seven year period. Fourteen were males, 10 were females and their ages ranged from 6 to 23 years at first presentation. We have treated 11 patients with cultured epidermal autograft (CEA) at the Indiana University Medical Center between April 1989 and January 1991. Seven of these patients had acute burns. We have followed up on five of them for at least 5 months; the remaining two are still hospitalized. In a retrospective study the surgically treated vascular injuries (n = 35) of the last 10 years were evaluated. One third of the patients had multiple trauma and in 57% of the cases vascular injury was accompanied by a fracture. With universal screening and expert evaluation of early clinical signs and symptoms of breast cancer, mortality rates can be reduced by 30% to 40%. Fifty eight patients were admitted to the University Pediatric Hospital with the diagnosis of foreign body aspiration from August 1986 to January 1991. We reviewed the charts of 476 patients admitted to a university teaching hospital to determine whether sedative-hypnotic drugs (SHDs) were being used excessively and to examine the use of SHDs as hypnotics. Enzyme-linked immunoabsorbent assays to detect chlamydial cervicitis were performed on samples from 1,320 sexually active university women. Seventy-five (prevalence 5.7 percent) had positive tests. Demographic, history, symptom, and physical examination variables were insufficient to predict infection accurately. We conclude that screening during routine visits with this population is cost-effective.

The clinical courses of 214 patients with infective endocarditis treated between 1958 and 1987 at the First Medical Hospital of the University of Kiel (FRG) were analyzed retrospectively. The reported incidence of mumps has declined dramatically since licensure of the live attenuated mumps vaccine in the United States in 1967, particularly in young children. Because administration of the vaccine was not widely practiced during the first decade it was available, there is now a cohort of teenagers and young adults who are relatively underimmunized. Limited data suggest that cesarean section (CS) may be the preferred method of delivery for triplets. Despite this, it is also felt that the third triplet is at great risk at delivery. We reviewed our experience of 14 triplet pregnancies at Northwestern University between 1981 and 1985. All deliveries were attended by neonatal teams in sufficient number to resuscitate each infant. Of the 14 pregnancies, two ended in previable loss. Thirty-six infants were born from 12 pregnancies of a mean gestational age of 33 weeks (28-38 weeks). The overall survival was 97.3%. Two women delivered vaginally.
