Phlebosclerotic colitis: value of radiography in diagnosis--report of three cases.

Three cases sharing the following radiologic features are reported: (a) abdominal conventional radiography-vascular calcifications at the right hemicolon, (b) abdominal computed tomography-colonic wall thickening and venous calcifications, and (c) barium enema examination-luminal narrowing of the right hemicolon and thumbprinting. There were no clinical or laboratory findings suggestive of portal hypertension. The disease entity, "phlebosclerotic colitis," should be differentiated from ordinary ischemic colitis.

Application of intravascular lithotripsy in a case of severely calcified arteriovenous fistula stenosis: A case report and technical note.

BACKGROUND: Severe calcification-associated stenosis of arteriovenous fistula (AVF) poses a significant challenge in the maintenance of hemodialysis access. Conventional balloon dilation often faces issues such as incomplete dilation and high complication rates. Intravascular lithotripsy (IVL) has been widely applied in coronary and peripheral artery fields, but its application for AVF calcification remains limited, with only a few technical reports available. METHODS: We present a case of severe circumferential calcification and stenosis of a radiocephalic arteriovenous fistula treated with

Evaluation of calcium hydroxide-containing root canal sealers with an improved rabbit ear chamber.

An improved rabbit ear chamber was used to evaluate calcium hydroxide-containing root canal sealers on their potential to induce dystrophic calcification in connective tissue. Four sealers and two control materials were introduced into the chambers and the effects of these materials on the living vascular tissue were observed continuously under a biomicroscope up to 9 weeks. Conventional histopathological investigation and examinations with a scanning electron microscope and an X-ray microanalyzer were done to supplement the results. Sealapex and Calvital (Ca(OH)2 + iodoform) revealed almost t

Quantification of lower leg arterial calcifications by high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography.

Vascular calcifications and bone health seem to be etiologically linked via common risk factors such as aging and subclinical chronic inflammation. Epidemiologic studies have shown significant associations between low bone mineral density (BMD), fragility fractures and calcifications of the coronary arteries and the abdominal aorta. In the last decade, high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HR-pQCT) has emerged as in-vivo research tool for the assessment of peripheral bone geometry, density, and microarchitecture. Although vascular calcifications are frequently observed a…

[Functional vascular alterations associated with aortic valve stenosis].

Degenerative changes, atherosclerotic process and calcification of valvular leaflets are mostly responsible for valvular aortic valve stenosis, but congenital bicuspid aortic valve and rheumatic fever in history are also known predisposing factors. Aortic valve stenosis is frequently associated with different functional vascular alterations. The aim of this review is to demonstrate these vascular alterations evaluated by non-invasive methods and underlying physiologic and pathophysiologic processes.

Bone Specific Alkaline Phosphatase and Serum Calcification Propensity Are Not Influenced by Etelcalcetide vs. Alfacalcidol Treatment, and Only Bone Specific Alkaline Phosphatase Is Correlated With Fibroblast Growth Factor 23: Sub-Analysis Results of the ETACAR-HD Study.

UNLABELLED: Secondary hyperparathyroidism in chronic kidney disease poses a major risk factor for vascular calcification and high bone turnover, leading to mineralization defects. The aim was to analyze the effect of active vitamin D and calcimimetic treatment on fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23), serum calcification propensity (T50), a surrogate marker of calcification stress and bone specific alkaline phosphatase (BAP) in hemodialysis. This is a subanalysis of a randomized trial comparing etelcalcetide vs. alfacalcidol in 62 hemodialysis patients for 1 year. We compared the change of BAP a…

Distribution of alkaline phosphatase, osteopontin, RANK ligand and osteoprotegerin in calcified human carotid atheroma.

Ectopic vascular calcification is a significant component of atherosclerotic disease. Osteopontin (OPN), Osteoprotegerin (OPG), Receptor Activator of NFκB Ligand (RANKL), and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) are each thought to play central roles in the calcification or demineralization of atherosclerotic lesions. Abnormalities in the balance of these proteins may lead to perturbations in bone remodeling and arterial calcification. The purpose of this study was to measure the distribution of these proteins in human carotid lesions and to elucidate possible mechanism(s) whereby they control the depos…

Atherosclerotic Aortic Calcification-Associated Polymorphism in HDAC9 and Associations with Mortality, Cardiovascular Disease, and Kidney Disease.

Histone deacetylase 9 (HDAC9) has recently been demonstrated as a key regulator of vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) phenotype and is associated with abdominal aortic calcification, myocardial infarction, and ischemic stroke. It is uncertain whether HDAC9 is also implicated in other VSMC-driven diseases. Our objective was to assess associations between abdominal aortic calcification-associated genetic variation in HDAC9 and VSMC-associated phenotypes. In this prospective population study of 335,146 adults enrolled in the UK Biobank, the abdominal aortic calcification-associated risk allele of

1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D deficiency is independently associated with cardiac valve calcification in patients with chronic kidney disease.

Cardiac valve calcification is highly prevalent in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Low vitamin D levels are associated with vascular calcification in CKD. However, the association between vitamin D levels and cardiac valve calcification is unknown. A total of 513 patients with pre-dialysis CKD were included in this cross-sectional study. Aortic valve calcification (AVC) and mitral valve calcification (MVC) were assessed using two-dimensional echocardiography. The associations between AVC and MVC and baseline variables were investigated using logistic regression analyses. In multiva…

Sitagliptin attenuates arterial calcification by downregulating oxidative stress-induced receptor for advanced glycation end products in LDLR knockout mice.

Diabetes is a complex disease characterized by hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia, and insulin resistance. Plasma advanced glycation end products (AGEs) activated the receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE) and the activation of RAGE is implicated to be the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetic mellitus (T2DM) patient vascular complications. Sitagliptin, a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP4) inhibitor, is a new oral hypoglycemic agent for the treatment of T2DM. However, the beneficial effects on vascular calcification remain unclear. In this study, we used a high-fat diet (HFD)-fed low-density lipopr…

Thymoma calcification: is it clinically meaningful?

Among anterior mediastinal lesions, thymoma is the most common. Thymomas are tumors of thymic epithelial cell origin that are distinguished by inconsistent histological and biologic behavior. Chest imaging studies typically show a round or lobulated tumor in the anterior mediastinum. Calcifications in thymomas are classically punctuate or amorphous, positioned within the lesion. Chest computed tomography (CT) features suggesting higher risk thymoma consist of tumor heterogeneity, vascular involvement, lobulation, pulmonary nodules, lymphadenopathy, and pleural manifestations. Imaging findings

Aortic Calcification is Associated With the Difference Between Invasive Central and Cuff-Measured Brachial Blood Pressure in Chronic Kidney Disease.

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with accelerated vascular calcification and increased central systolic blood pressure when measured invasively (invCSBP) relative to cuff-based brachial systolic blood pressure (cuffSBP). The contribution of aortic wall calcification to this phenomenon has not been clarified. We, therefore, examined the effects of aortic calcification on cuffSBP and invCSBP in a cohort of patients representing all stages of CKD. METHODS: During elective coronary angiography, invCSBP was measured in the ascending aorta with a fluid-filled catheter with sim…

Correlation of simple imaging tests and coronary artery calcium measured by computed tomography in hemodialysis patients.

Vascular calcification is associated with an adverse prognosis in end-stage renal disease. It can be accurately quantitated with computed tomography but simple in-office techniques may provide equally useful information. Accordingly we compared the results obtained with simple non-invasive techniques with those obtained using electron beam tomography (EBT) for coronary artery calcium scoring (CACS) in 140 prevalent hemodialysis patients. All patients underwent EBT imaging, a lateral X-ray of the lumbar abdominal aorta, an echocardiogram, and measurement of pulse pressure (PP). Calcification of…
