Co-localized but target-unrelated expression of vasoactive intestinal polypeptide and galanin in rat dorsal root ganglion neurons after peripheral nerve crush injury.

Expression of vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) and galanin in dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons is known to be induced by peripheral nerve injury. We investigated (1) whether VIP and galanin were co-expressed by DRG neurons and (2) whether such neurons innervated specified peripheral targets (visceral, cutaneous or muscular). An antibody to the 200 kDa neurofilament subunit (NF200) was used as a marker for large type-A cells in the DRG. VIP and galanin were respectively observed in 22% and 67% of DRG neurons at the L5 spinal level after crushing of the sciatic nerve. Most VIP-containin

Innervation pattern of malformative cortical vessels in Sturge-Weber disease: an histochemical, immunohistochemical, and ultrastructural study.

OBJECTIVE: This study was undertaken to elucidate the pattern of vascular innervation in areas of pial angiomatosis in Sturge-Weber disease … cholinesterase activity and immunoreactivity for Substance P, a calcitonin gene-related peptide and vasoactive intestinal peptide, were detected. Ultrastructural studies revealed the presence of numerous axon varicosities at the adventitial-medial border. Innervation of the thyroid. A study of the rat using retrograde tracing and immunocytochemistry.

The distribution and origin of the nerve fibers innervating the rat thyroid were studied by immunocytochemistry in experiments involving retrograde tracing and denervations. Nerve fibers containing noradrenaline (NA), neuropeptide Y (NPY), vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP), galanin (GAL), substance P (SP), and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) occurred around blood vessels and follicles. Many of these transmitter candidates coexisted with each other in different combinations in different subpopulations of neurones. Injection of the retrograde tracer True Blue into the thyroid gland labe…

Inhibition of PACAP/PAC1/VPAC2 signaling impairs the consolidation of social recognition memory and nitric oxide prevents this deficit.

Social recognition memory (SRM) forms the basis of social relationships of animals. It is essential for social interaction and adaptive behavior, reproduction and species survival. Evidence demonstrates that social deficits of psychiatric disorders such as autism and schizophrenia are caused by alterations in SRM processing by the hippocampus and amygdala. Pituitary Adenylate Cyclase-Activating Polypeptide (PACAP) and its receptors PAC1, VPAC1 and VPAC2 are highly expressed in these regions. PACAP is a pleiotropic neuropeptide that modulates synaptic function and plasticity and is thought to b

Cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript (CART) is expressed in the ovine pancreas.

Indirect immunohistochemistry was applied to demonstrate the presence of cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript (CART) peptide expression in the pancreas of the sheep. Using double immunocytochemical staining, the co-incidence of vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP), neuropeptide Y (NPY) or substance P (SP) in CART-immunoreactive (IR) nerve fibers and intrapancreatic neurons was analyzed. Immunoreactivity to CART was detected in endocrine cells predominantly localized at the islet periphery. The exocrine pancreas and blood vessels were intensively innervated by CART-IR nerve fibers.

Peripheral mechanisms for the initiation of pain following trigeminal nerve injury.

Injury to a branch of the trigeminal nerve may lead to the development of chronic pain in the affected area. The etiology of this condition is not clear, but there is strong evidence to suggest that spontaneous and mechanically induced neural discharge from the injury site plays a crucial role. In laboratory studies, we have characterized this discharge following injury to the inferior alveolar or lingual nerves and have shown a temporal association with the accumulation of neuropeptides in the damaged axons. Substance P, calcitonin gene-related peptide, and vasoactive intestinal polypeptide w

Neuropeptides in the skin of patients with atopic dermatitis.

There is increasing evidence that neuropeptides may be involved in the pathogenesis of atopic dermatitis (AD). This study examines whether neuropeptide distribution in the skin of patients with AD differs from normal controls. The distribution and density of several neuropeptides were examined in lesional and non-lesional skin of AD patients (n = 5) and in normal controls (n = 4) using indirect immunofluorescence and image analysis. Cholinergic innervation was studied using cholinesterase histochemistry. Staining with the general neuronal marker protein gene product 9 x 5 showed a subepidermal

Peptidergic innervation of arterial chemoreceptors.

The peptidergic innervation of arterial chemoreceptor organs (the rat carotid body and vagal paraganglia; guinea pig carotid body) was studied immunohistochemically. Five different populations of nerve fibres in the guinea pig carotid body could be discriminated according to their origin and their chemical coding. The innervation pattern of the rat carotid body differed in some aspects. Comparison of the rat carotid body and vagal paraganglia suggested that autonomic neuropeptide Y-like immunoreactive fibres act primarily via vascular mechanisms rather than directly on the chemoreceptor tissue

Neuropeptides in dental pulp: the silent protagonists.

Dental pulp is a soft mesenchymal tissue densely innervated by afferent (sensory) fibers, sympathetic fibers, and parasympathetic fibers. This complexity in pulp innervation has motivated numerous investigations regarding how these 3 major neuronal systems regulate pulp physiology and pathology. Most of this research is focused on neuropeptides and their role in regulating pulpal blood flow and the development of neurogenic inflammation. These neuropeptides include substance P, calcitonin gene-related peptide, neurokinin A, neuropeptide Y, and vasoactive intestinal polypeptide among others. Th
