[A histological response to antiviral therapy for chronic hepatitis C in patients who failed to achieve a sustained virological response].

The paper presents the results of combination antiviral therapy (AVT) in 2 patients with chronic hepatitis C (CHC) unresponsive to AVT. Both patients are classified as difficult to treat (genotype 1b, a high viral load, overweight). 1.5 years after the termination of a course of AVT, histological examination of biopsy specimens revealed a histological response in one patient and significant histological worsening in the other. The specific features of the development of a histological response to AVT and possible reasons for its lack are discussed by the example of the described patients.

Integrated clinical, pathologic, virologic, and transcriptomic analysis of H5N1 influenza virus-induced viral pneumonia in the rhesus macaque.

Viral pneumonia has been frequently reported during early stages of influenza virus pandemics and in many human cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 virus infection. To better understand the pathogenesis of this disease, we produced nonlethal viral pneumonia in rhesus macaques by using an HPAI H5N1 virus (A/Anhui/2/2005; referred to as Anhui/2). Infected macaques were monitored for 14 days, and tissue samples were collected at 6 time points for virologic, histopathologic, and transcriptomic analyses. Anhui/2 efficiently replicated in the lung from 12 h to 3 days postinfection

Virological pattern of hepatitis B infection in an HIV-positive man with fatal fulminant hepatitis B: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: There seem to be no published data concerning the clinical impact of populations of hepatitis B virus (HBV) in the hepatic and extrahepatic compartments of HIV-infected people with severe acute hepatitis. CASE PRESENTATION: A 26-year-old Caucasian man presenting to our hospital with clinical symptoms suggesting acute hepatitis was found to have an acute hepatitis B profile upon admission. He developed fatal fulminant hepatitis and was found to be heavily immunocompromised due to HIV-1 infection. He had a high plasma HBV and HIV load, and analysis of the partial pre-S1/pre-S2 dom

Utility of repeat genotypic resistance testing and clinical response in patients with three class resistance and virologic treatment failure.

We sought to determine the utility of repeat genotypic resistance testing (GRT) and the clinical response in HIV-1-infected patients with known resistance to three of the major classes of antiretroviral drugs. The HIV-1 genetic sequences for 20 patients who had high-level 3 class resistance demonstrated on a prior GRT (3C-GRT 1) measured during the period from November 1, 2000 through July 1, 2004 were retrospectively evaluated. At the time of 3C-GRT 1, the median CD4 count and HIV-1 RNA viral load were 168 cells/mm(3) and 4.5 log copies per milliliter, respectively. The median time to the sec

Tipranavir (TPV) genotypic inhibitory quotient predicts virological response at 48 weeks to TPV-based salvage regimens.

The virological response (VR) to a tipranavir-ritonavir (TPV-RTV)-based regimen had been shown to be associated with a number of mutations in the protease gene, the use of enfuvirtide (T20), and the TPV phenotypic inhibitory quotient (IQ). The role of the TPV genotypic IQ (gIQ) has not yet been fully investigated. The aim of our study was to evaluate the relationship between the TPV gIQ and the VR at 48 weeks to TPV-based salvage regimens. Patients placed on regimens containing two nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors plus TPV-RTV 500/200 mg twice a day with or without T20 were prospect

Experimental yellow fever virus infection in the Golden Hamster (Mesocricetus auratus). I. Virologic, biochemical, and immunologic studies.

This report describes the clinical laboratory findings in golden hamsters experimentally infected with yellow fever (YF) virus. An accompanying paper describes the pathologic findings. Following intraperitoneal inoculation of a virulent strain of YF virus, hamsters developed a high-titered viremia (up to 109/mL) lasting 5--6 days and abnormal liver function tests. YF hemagglutination-inhibiting antibodies appeared 4 or 5 days after infection, often while viremia was still present. The mortality rate in YF-infected hamsters was variable, depending on the virus strain and the age of the animals.

Virologic and clinical expressions of reciprocal inhibitory effect of hepatitis B, C, and delta viruses in patients with chronic hepatitis.

We studied 648 hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg)- and/or anti-hepatitis C virus (HCV)-positive patients to evaluate the virologic and clinical characteristics of multiple hepatitis viral infection. We defined as Case B-C an HBsAg/anti-HCV positive patient and as Case b-C an anti-HCV/anti-HBc-positive, HBsAg/anti-HBs-negative patient. For each Case B-C we scheduled as Control-B an HBsAg positive and anti-HCV negative patient and as Control-C an HBsAg/anti-HBs/anti-hepatitis B core antigen (HBc)-negative and anti-HCV-positive patient. Control group C was used as the control also for Case group

Virologic, immunologic, and clinical follow-up of a couple infected by the human immunodeficiency virus type one, group O.

The pathogenic course (virologic, immunologic, and clinical changes) of infection due to human immunodeficiency virus type one (HIV-1) group O viruses is unknown at present. To address this issue, serial HIV-1 isolates from a married couple (patients A and B) infected with a group O virus were analyzed to determine the temporal association between disease status and alterations in several parameters including plasma viral burden as measured by semiquantitative polymerase chain reaction, changes in CD4+ T cells, presence of neutralizing antibodies, and the ability to induce syncytia on the MT2

Long-term protection against Argentine hemorrhagic fever in Tacaribe virus infected marmosets: virologic and histopathologic findings.

Tacaribe virus may represent a better alternative than attenuated strains of Junin virus (JV) for immunization against Argentine hemorrhagic fever (AHF) because of possible risk of persistent infection of disease associated with live, attenuated strains. Callithrix jacchus marmosets, which suffer 100% mortality if inoculated with the pathogenic XJ strain of JV, were used to evaluate possible Tacaribe virus persistence, subclinical, or long-term disease and the duration of protection against challenge with JV. Histologic studies did not show pathogenic changes due to Tacaribe virus in primates

Morphological and virological investigations of cell strains cultured from the brain in Jakob-Creutzfeldt disease and subacute sclerosing panencephalitis.

Cell strains were established in culture from fragments of the brain from 2 cases each of Jakob-Creutzfeldt (JC) disease and subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE). After about 12 weeks strains from the former spontaneously formed persistent heaped up nodules of cells which appeared to produce reticulin-like fibrils as well as confluent sheets of rounded and spindle, fibroblast-like cells. Similar sheets of cells were obtained from the cases of SSPE but the only nodules formed were smaller and ephemeral. Attempts to detect virus in all 4 strains were made by inoculation of supernatant flui

Nutritional and hematological determinants of immune reconstitution and development of a predictive model among virologically suppressed people living with HIV.

BACKGROUND: Despite effective viral suppression achieved through antiretroviral therapy (ART), a substantial proportion of people living with HIV (PLWH) fail to achieve adequate immune reconstitution and remain at increased risk of adverse clinical outcomes. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted among PLWH in Hebei Province, China, who received long-term ART and achieved sustained virological suppression. Immune reconstitution was defined as achieving a CD4 + T cell count ≥350 cells/μL during follow-up. Kaplan-Meier analysis and Cox proportional hazards regression were performed
