Incidence and risk factors of retinopathy of prematurity and utility of the national screening criteria in a tertiary center in Iran.

AIM: To determine the incidence and risk factors of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) and the sensitivity of current screening criteria in a tertiary eye center in Tehran, Iran. METHODS: In a cross-sectional observational study, neonates weighing ≤2000 grams at birth or born <34wk gestational age (GA) and all other infants at risk of ROP admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) or referred to our ROP clinic were investigated. The incidence of ROP and severe ROP (i.e. patients needing treatment) were determined. The associations between risk factors and the development and severity o

Superpixel classification based optic disc and optic cup segmentation for glaucoma screening.

Glaucoma is a chronic eye disease that leads to vision loss. As it cannot be cured, detecting the disease in time is important. Current tests using intraocular pressure (IOP) are not sensitive enough for population based glaucoma screening. Optic nerve head assessment in retinal fundus images is both more promising and superior. This paper proposes optic disc and optic cup segmentation using superpixel classification for glaucoma screening. In optic disc segmentation, histograms, and center surround statistics are used to classify each superpixel as disc or non-disc. A self-assessment reliabil

Screening for prodromal Parkinson's disease in the general community: a sleep-based approach.

OBJECTIVE/BACKGROUND: Neuroprotective therapy for Parkinson's disease (PD) is most likely to be effective if provided in its prodromal stages. However, identifying prodromal PD is difficult because PD is relatively uncommon, and most markers are nonspecific. Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (RBD) is by far the strongest clinical marker of prodromal PD, but most patients do not seek out medical attention. Developing an efficient way of diagnosing RBD from the general community may be the most practical method to detect prodromal PD. METHODS: We developed a screening strategy th

Age related macular degeneration and visual disability.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of central blindness or low vision among the elderly in industrialized countries. AMD is caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Among modifiable environmental risk factors, cigarette smoking has been associated with both the dry and wet forms of AMD and may increase the likelihood of worsening pre-existing AMD. Despite advances, the treatment of AMD has limitations and affected patients are often referred for low vision rehabilitation to help them cope with their remaining eyesight. The characteristic visual imp

Are amblyopia therapy outcomes related to socioeconomic situation for children in Greater Manchester?

BACKGROUND: Limited evidence exists around health inequalities in amblyopia therapy. This cohort study explores amblyopia therapy outcomes and socioeconomic scores by postcode, across two boroughs within Greater Manchester. METHODS: All available orthoptic records for school vision screening referrals from the academic year 2017-2018 were reviewed by one Research Orthoptist, to identify children diagnosed with unilateral amblyopia. Clinical data were extracted and the proportion amblyopia deficit corrected and appointment attendance rates over 1 year of therapy were calculated. Home postcodes…

Estimation of cycloplegic spherical refraction from non-cycloplegic clinical and biometric data in children using machine learning: a retrospective pilot study for screening triage.

OBJECTIVE: To develop and evaluate non-cycloplegic clinical and biometric models for estimating cycloplegic spherical power (DS), spherical equivalent (SE), and astigmatic power-vector components (J0 and J45) in children, and to assess their utility as a preliminary screening-triage aid rather than a substitute for cycloplegic refraction. METHODS: This retrospective pilot study included 590 children aged 2.4-14.8 years who underwent cycloplegic refraction at the Children's Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine. The children were randomly divided at the patient level into training a

Protocol for an adaptive platform trial of intended service user-derived interventions to equitably reduce non-attendance in eye screening programmes in Botswana, India, Kenya and Nepal.

INTRODUCTION: Only 30%-50% of people referred to clinics during community-based eye screening are able to access care in Botswana, India, Kenya and Nepal. The access rate is even lower for certain population groups. This platform trial aims to test multiple, iterative, low-risk public health interventions and simple service modifications with a series of individual randomised controlled trials (RCT) conducted in each country, with the aim of increasing the proportion of people attending. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: We will set up a platform trial in each country to govern the running of a series of

Incidence of open-angle glaucoma and screening of the intraocular pressure with a non-contact tonometer.

New equipment for measuring intraocular pressure have been introduced lately. One of these is the Keeler Pulsair non-contact tonometer which uses pressurized air in measurement. It is found to be safe and easy to use in practice, but it seems to give 1.5-2.0 mmHg lower reading than the Goldmann applanation tonometer. This was confirmed by the present study, where non-contact tonometry was controlled by applanation tonometry with a 2-3 week delay between the measurements. However, for screening procedures the accuracy of the apparatus can be considered as sufficient.

A Case Series of Familial Macular Drusen: Clinical, Imaging, and Diagnostic Considerations in the Spectrum Between Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) and Other Macular Disorders.

Familial clustering of macular drusen in younger adults can mimic age-related macular degeneration (AMD) but may reflect an underlying inherited macular disorder. We describe a 72-year-old Chinese woman with high myopia and advanced neovascular AMD in one eye, who presented with progressive visual decline. Despite anti-vascular endothelial growth factor therapy, vision remained poor. Concerned about familial risk, her three adult children were examined. All three adult children (aged 46, 38, and 36 years) were asymptomatic despite drusen being detected on examination. This multigenerational cl

Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis Associated Uveitis.

Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is the most common childhood rheumatic disease. The development of associated uveitis represents a significant risk for serious complications, including permanent loss of vision. Initiation of early treatment is important for controlling JIA-uveitis, but the disease can appear asymptomatically, making frequent screening procedures necessary for patients at risk. As our understanding of pathogenic drivers is currently incomplete, it is difficult to assess which JIA patients are at risk of developing uveitis. Identification of specific risk factors for JIA-ass

Proposed Classification System for Retinal Capillary Angiomatosis.

Retinal angiomas are rare tumors that develop within the vascular bed of the retina. Their occurrence may be sporadic or as part of the multisystem disorder called von Hippel-Lindau disease. It is well established in literature that retinal angiomas have a natural history of evolving as small aneurysmal dilatations and progressing to vision-threatening retinal detachments. Several approaches to the management of these angiomas have been reported in the literature, but it is difficult to decipher which modality is best suited for which type of angioma. A classification of retinal angiomas is pr
