[Diagnosis and therapy of laryngeal diseases in the history of medicine. I: The pre-laryngoscopic era].

BACKGROUND: ANATOMY, PHYSIOLOGY AND PATHOLOGY: Hippocrates and Aristotle did not yet have a clear idea of the anatomy and physiology of the larynx. 500 years later Galenos carried out subtle studies on animals and elaborated a fairly precise description of the different cartilages, muscles and nerves of the larynx; he was the first to demonstrate the superior and the recurrent nerves of the larynx. He performed numerous experiments on animals with temporary or permanent interruption of the nervous function and thus developed a correct opinion of the vocal physiology. However, he did not draw c

High Accumulation of Methadone Compared with Buprenorphine in Fetal Rat Brain after Maternal Exposure.

Experimental animal studies are valuable in revealing a causal relationship between prenatal exposure to opioid maintenance treatment (OMT) and subsequent effects; however, previous animal studies of OMT during pregnancy have been criticized for their lack of clinical relevance because of their use of high drug doses and the absence of pharmacokinetic data. Hence, the aim of this study was to determine blood and brain concentrations in rat dams, fetuses, and offspring after continuous maternal exposure to methadone or buprenorphine during gestation and to examine the offspring for neonatal out

Simultaneous Changes in Sleep, qEEG, Physiology, Behaviour and Neurochemistry in Rats Exposed to Repeated Social Defeat Stress.

Depression is a heterogeneous disorder characterized by alterations at psychological, behavioural, physiological, neurophysiological, and neurochemical levels. Social stress is a prevalent stress in man, and the repeated social defeat stress model in rats has been proposed as being the rodent equivalent to loss of control, which in subordinate animals produces alterations that resemble several of the cardinal symptoms found in depressed patients. Here, rats followed a resident-intruder protocol for 4 consecutive days during which behavioural, physiological, and electroencephalographic (EEG) pa

Modified thyroplasty for unilateral vocal fold paralysis using an adjustable titanium implant.

This study aimed to describe a new titanium thyroplasty implant that can be adjusted with a screw. Six Beagle dogs were randomly divided into experimental and control groups (n = 3). The titanium screw was implanted in the experimental group after the left recurrent laryngeal nerve was cut off under general anaesthesia. This procedure caused arytenoid cartilage internal shift, allowing the vocal cord to locate at the median and the glottis to close during phonation. No other operation was conducted in the control group. Each group, respectively, underwent video laryngoscopy, CT scan and histop

Effects of local anesthetic or systemic analgesia on pain associated with cautery disbudding in calves: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Disbudding is a common management procedure performed on dairy farms and, when done without pain mitigation, is viewed as a key welfare issue. Use of pain control has increased in recent years, but full adoption of anesthesia and analgesia by veterinarians or dairy producers has not been achieved. This may in part be due to the lack of a consistent recommendations of treatment protocols between studies examining pain control methods for disbudding. The objective of this systematic review was to examine the effects of these pain control practices for the most common method of disbudding, cauter

Listening for behavior: Identifying common behavior-associated call types to improve acoustic monitoring of cryptic sound-producing species.

Passive acoustic monitoring has become crucial in detecting cryptic sound-producing animals over the past two decades, but the behavioral context of different call types and the insights this information conveys have not been as widely integrated. Here, we used acoustic data alongside behavioral observations to better characterize North Atlantic right whale (Eubalaena glacialis) call type production in the context of social surface active group (SAG) behavior. Verified right whale calls collected from both archival recorders and biologging tags were grouped into discrete call types, and the pr

Mouse Vocal Fold Permeability In Vivo: Effects of Novel Low-Tech Injury and Instillation Methods.

OBJECTIVES: Vocal fold (VF) injury and instillation are emerging techniques to study laryngeal pathologies in mouse models. Most approaches require high-tech visualization and lengthy anesthesia. Intraperitoneal (IP) naphthalene (NAPH) and topical polidocanol (PDOC) are two chemical methods of injuring murine lower airways. Oropharyngeal aspiration (OA) is used for murine lung instillation. We assessed whether these simple low-tech methods could injure and instill mouse VFs, and whether injury increased in vivo VF epithelial permeability. METHODS: Mouse VFs were injured using IP NAPH at 200,

What's special about human speech? A student exercise for comparing speech production between humans and chimpanzees.

Modern humans and chimpanzees share a common ancestor on the phylogenetic tree, yet chimpanzees do not spontaneously produce speech or speech sounds. The lab exercise presented in this paper was developed for undergraduate students in a course entitled "What's Special About Human Speech?" The exercise is based on acoustic analyses of the words "cup" and "papa" as spoken by Viki, a home-raised, speech-trained chimpanzee, as well as the words spoken by a human. The analyses allow students to relate differences in articulation and vocal abilities between Viki and humans to the known anatomical di

Laryngeal Demasculinization in Wild Cane Toads Varies with Land Use.

Anthropogenic factors, including the spread of endocrine-disrupting chemicals, have been linked to alterations in the reproductive physiology, morphology, and behavior of wildlife. Few studies of endocrine disruption, however, focus on secondary sexual traits that affect mating signals, despite their importance for reproductive success. The larynx of many anurans (frogs and toads), for example, is larger in males than in females and is crucial for producing mating calls. We aim to determine if wild populations of cane toads (Rhinella marina) near sugarcane fields in Florida have demasculinized

Magnetic Control of the Glottic Opening in an Ex Vivo Sheep Larynx Model: A Preliminary Study.

OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS: So far, a number of techniques have been described for the treatment of bilateral vocal fold paralysis. These techniques were reported to be successful in maintaining an adequate airway but also found to be associated with an increased risk of aspiration, dysphonia, and granulation tissue formation at the operation site. We aimed to investigate the effectiveness of a novel mucosa-sparing technique based on the generation of a magnetic field within the larynx for the tailored lateralization of the ipsilateral vocal fold. STUDY DESIGN: This is an ex vivo experimental study

Drinking songs: alcohol effects on learned song of zebra finches.

Speech impairment is one of the most intriguing and least understood effects of alcohol on cognitive function, largely due to the lack of data on alcohol effects on vocalizations in the context of an appropriate experimental model organism. Zebra finches, a representative songbird and a premier model for understanding the neurobiology of vocal production and learning, learn song in a manner analogous to how humans learn speech. Here we show that when allowed access, finches readily drink alcohol, increase their blood ethanol concentrations (BEC) significantly, and sing a song with altered acou

Initial investigation of anterior approach to arytenoid adduction in excised larynges.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Arytenoid adduction (AA) can dramatically improve voice quality in patients with vocal fold paralysis (VFP); however, it is technically challenging. We present an anterior approach to AA, where GORE-TEX suture attached to curled wire is passed through the thyroid cartilage or cricothyroid membrane via a guide needle and used to manipulate the muscular process of the arytenoid. Performing AA via an anterior approach leads to comparable aerodynamic and acoustic outcomes compared to traditional AA in an excised larynx model. STUDY DESIGN: Repeated measures with each larynx

Graded activation of the intrinsic laryngeal muscles for vocal fold posturing.

Previous investigations using in vivo models to study the role of intrinsic laryngeal muscles in phonation have used neuromuscular stimulation to study voice parameters. However, these studies used coarse stimulation techniques using limited levels of neuromuscular stimulation. In the current investigation, a technique for fine control of laryngeal posturing was developed using graded stimulation of the laryngeal nerves. Vocal fold strain history to graded stimulation and a methodology for establishing symmetric laryngeal activation is presented. This methodology has immediate applications for

Frequency matching of vocalizations to inner-ear sensitivity along an altitudinal gradient in the coqui frog.

Acoustic communication involves both the generation and the detection of a signal. In the coqui frog (Eleutherodactylus coqui), it is known that the spectral contents of its calls systematically change with altitude above sea level. Here, distortion product otoacoustic emissions are used to assess the frequency range over which the inner ear is sensitive. It is found that both the spectral contents of the calls and the inner-ear sensitivity change in a similar fashion along an altitudinal gradient. As a result, the call frequencies and the auditory tuning are closely matched at all altitudes.

Optical and tomographic imaging of a middle ear malformation in the bullfrog (Rana catesbeiana).

Using a combination of in vivo computerized tomography and histological staining, a middle ear anomaly in two wild-caught American bullfrogs (Rana catesbeiana) is characterized. In these animals, the tympanic membrane, extrastapes, and pars media (shaft) of the stapes are absent on one side of the head, with the other side exhibiting normal morphology. The pars interna (footplate) of the stapes and the operculum are present in their normal positions at the entrance of the otic capsule on both the affected and unaffected sides. The pattern of deformity suggests a partial failure of development

Respiratory units of motor production and song imitation in the zebra finch.

Juvenile male zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata) learn a stereotyped song by imitating sounds from adult male tutors. Their song is composed of a series of syllables, which are separated by silent periods. How acoustic units of song are translated into respiratory and syringeal motor gestures during the song learning process is not well understood. To learn about the respiratory contribution to the imitation process, we recorded air sac pressure in 38 male zebra finches and compared the acoustic structures and air sac pressure patterns of similar syllables qualitatively and quantitatively. Pharmacological studies on new potential local anesthetics.

The results of the pharmacological screening of a series of new basic aminoalkyl aryl ethers are reported. The anesthetic effects of these compounds were evaluated by the guinea pig intradermal wheal test. Lidocaine was used as the standard and normal saline as the control. These were, generally, better than or as good as the standard, in terms of potency, onset of action, duration of effect, time of full recovery from complete anesthesia and lack of both apparent local and systemic side effects. The duration of action of their local anesthesia has shown a strong dependence on the substitution

The effects of several anorexigenics on monkey social behavior.

The effects of fenfluramine HCl, diethylpropion HCl, and methylphenidate HCl on social behavior were studied in a heterosexual group of stumptailed monkeys (M. arctoides). Subjects were treated concurrently (i.e., every monkey received the same treatment on a given day). The range of doses studied was: fenfluramine (1.0-10 mg/kg), methylphenidate (1.0-5.0 mg/kg), and diethylpropion (2.0-20 mg/kg). In general most drug/dose combinations produced decreases in social interactions. However, there was one notable exception; presenting was dramatically increased following dosing with methylphenidate

Laryngoscopic evaluation of arytenoid movements in pure Arabian horses.

BACKGROUND: The equine larynx can be affected by a variety of diseases that may interfere with upper respiratory tract patency. Laryngeal hemiplegia is a well-known disease in large-sized equine breeds and its occurrence in Arabian horses has not been thoroughly investigated. AIM: To endoscopically assess arytenoid movements in pure Arabian horses. METHODS: A total number of 38 pure Arabian horses were examined. When the horse was unsedated, the laryngeal arytenoid movement was assessed using a laryngoscope, and a grading score was assigned accordingly. RESULTS: Evidence of laryngeal moveme
