Selection at the ABO locus in the Japanese population.

Hiraizumi et al. (1973b) concluded that maternal-fetal ABO incompatibility effect upon the frequency of prenatal deaths was totally absent in two modern Japanese cities, Ohdate and Akita. However, they found a significant heterogeneity in the frequency of prenatal deaths among 16 mating types and suggested that the viability of A-bearing fetuses was higher than that of others, hence the frequency of prenatal deaths decreased with the increasing probability of producing A-bearing fetuses. Further analyses were performed in the present study and the above suggestion was confirmed. Then, the aver

Fetal and maternal risks associated with intrauterine transfusion procedures.

Continuing follow-up observations and study of information as derived from a large cohort of fetal recipients of intrauterine transfusion (IUT) is utilized to provide estimates of maternal and fetal risks associated with the transfusion procedures, subsequent maternal complications of the pregnancy, and the health, intelligence, and behavior of the erythroblastotic recipient. The upper limit of risk of the procedure is estimated to be 7.2 per cent. Fourteen per cent of hydropic fetuses survived through the perinatal period as compared with 47 per cent of nonhydropic fetuses. One infant develop

[Perinatal hemolytic disease. Part 1: physiopathology].

Perinatal hemolytic disease is characterized by the destruction of fetal red blood cells by maternal antibodies directed against membrane antigens and can lead to immune fetal hydrops. More than 250 blood group antigens have been described. After considering the particular situation of ABO incompatibility, this article describes the classification of red blood cells antigens, with particular reference to the Rhesus system. Other antigens such as Kell, Kidd, Duffy, MNSs, P and Lutheran are also considered.

Detection of naturally occurring alloantibody by an in-clinic antiglobulin-enhanced and standard crossmatch gel column test in non-transfused domestic shorthair cats.

BACKGROUND: Blood typing for the A and B antigens is essential and crossmatching testing is generally recommended before transfusing blood to cats. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate 2 crossmatch (XM) tests. ANIMALS: Forty-nine healthy domestic shorthair cats that had not received a blood transfusion. METHODS: Prospective study. Blood samples were typed for AB using immunochromatographic and flow cytometric techniques. A gel column (GC) and a feline antiglobulin-enhanced gel column (AGC) XM tests were used for crossmatching. RESULTS: The population included 34 type A, 13 B, and 2 AB cats, with concord

Norovirus and histo-blood group antigens: demonstration of a wide spectrum of strain specificities and classification of two major binding groups among multiple binding patterns.

Noroviruses, an important cause of acute gastroenteritis, have been found to recognize human histo-blood group antigens (HBGAs) as receptors. Four strain-specific binding patterns to HBGAs have been described in our previous report. In this study, we have extended the binding patterns to seven based on 14 noroviruses examined. The oligosaccharide-based assays revealed additional epitopes that were not detected by the saliva-based assays. The seven patterns have been classified into two groups according to their interactions with three major epitopes (A/B, H, and Lewis) of human HBGAs: the A/B-

ABO Blood Group and Risk of Thromboembolic and Arterial Disease: A Study of 1.5 Million Blood Donors.

BACKGROUND: ABO blood groups have been shown to be associated with increased risks of venous thromboembolic and arterial disease. However, the reported magnitude of this association is inconsistent and is based on evidence from small-scale studies. METHODS AND RESULTS: We used the SCANDAT2 (Scandinavian Donations and Transfusions) database of blood donors linked with other nationwide health data registers to investigate the association between ABO blood groups and the incidence of first and recurrent venous thromboembolic and arterial events. Blood donors in Denmark and Sweden between 1987 an

Analysis of Titers of Immunoglobulin M and Immunoglobulin G ABO Antibodies in Group O Blood and Plateletphersis Donors at a Tertiary Care Hospital.

CONTEXT: ABO isoagglutinins, particularly anti-A and anti-B antibodies, are clinically significant in transfusion medicine due to their potential to cause hemolytic reactions in recipients of ABO-incompatible blood components. Evaluating the distribution of isoagglutinin titers in group O donors is essential for enhancing transfusion safety. AIMS: The aim of this study was to assess and compare anti-A and anti-B immunoglobulin (Ig) M and IgG titers among group O whole blood and plateletpheresis donors and explore their association with donor age and type. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-se

Impact of new myeloma agents on the transfusion laboratory.

Monoclonal antibody (mAb) therapy targeting CD38 and CD47 antigens expressed on cancer cells has transformed therapy options for patients with multiple myeloma as well as other haematological and non-haematological malignancies. While the on target effects of these new drugs highlight the promise of precision cancer therapeutics, the unintended, off target binding of drugs to red blood cells (RBCs) and platelets has required transfusion service laboratories (TSL) and immunohaematology reference laboratories (IRL) to innovate and rapidly set up processes and testing protocols to overcome the si

ABO Discrepancy in Multiple Myeloma Initially Suspected as a Complication of COVID-19 Vaccination.

The effect of COVID-19 infection and its vaccines on the immune system is still a subject of much research and debate. Caution is warranted to rule out known entities before considering these possibilities. We report a case of an incidentally detected ABO discrepancy initially suspected to be temporally associated with COVID-19 vaccination but diagnosed ultimately as multiple myeloma. A 52-year-old male patient presented with weakness, easy fatigability, and chest pain following the second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. His hemoglobin fell progressively, and he was advised blood transfusion. Bl

ABO and Rhesus blood group variability and their associations with clinical malaria presentations.

BACKGROUND: Plasmodium falciparum infection is associated with the human ABO blood group. However, there is a paucity of data on the role that ABO and Rhesus blood groups play in malaria clinical presentations. Therefore, the objective of this study was to assess the association of human ABO blood groups and the Rhesus blood (Rh) types with the severity of malaria. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was carried out at the Suhum Government Hospital in the Eastern region of Ghana. Conveniently, study participants with malaria, diagnosed by microscopy, were selected into the study. Subsequently

Readmission for newborn jaundice: the value of the Coombs' test in predicting the need for phototherapy.

Current practice at our hospital is to perform a direct antiglobulin test (DAT) on cord blood samples of all infants born to blood type O or Rh-negative mothers. Measurement of serum total bilirubin (STB) level and follow-up after discharge are at the discretion of the individual physician. The purposes of the present study were, first, to determine the clinical utility of performing a routine DAT and, second, to define the clinical characteristics of infants readmitted to the hospital for phototherapy. The study was done over a 1-year period extending from January 1 to December 31, 2000. A re

[HLA, blood group, secretory factor, pepsinogen I, and Helicobacter pylori in duodenal ulcer patients].

Duodenal ulcer is a multifactorial entity where a genetic predisposition and extrinsic elements seem to concur in its origin. A series of genetic and extrinsic markers were determined in 50 patients with duodenal ulcer and 50 controls matched by age, sex and socioeconomical status. HLA antigens dit not have significant differences. Blood group O Rh+ was predominant (p < 0.01). Secretor status of antigen HBO in saliva was positive in 70% of patients (p < 0.001). Serum Pepsinogen I was increased in 85% of cases (p < 0.001). Immunoglobulin G anti H. pylori was positive in 62% of ulcerous (p < 0.0

The Role of the Laboratory and Transfusion Service in the Management of Ebola Virus Disease.

The Ebola outbreak that began in 2013 infected and killed record numbers of individuals and created unprecedented challenges, including containment and treatment of the virus in resource-strained West Africa as well as the repatriation and treatment for patients in the United States and Europe. Valuable lessons were learned, especially the important role that the laboratory and transfusion service plays in the treatment for patients with Ebola virus disease (EVD) by providing data for supportive care and fluid resuscitation as well as the generation of investigational therapies such as convale

Complement receptor 1 inhibitors for prevention of immune-mediated red cell destruction: potential use in transfusion therapy.

Activation of complement cascade via the antibody-mediated classical pathway can initiate red blood cell (RBC) destruction, causing transfusion reactions and hemolytic anemia. In the present study, we have assessed the ability of a human recombinant soluble form of complement receptor 1 (sCR1) to inhibit complement-mediated RBC destruction in vitro and in vivo. Using an in vitro alloimmune incompatibility model, sCR1 inhibited complement activation and prevented hemolysis. Following transfusion of human group O RBCs into mice lacking detectable pre-existing antibodies against the transfused RB

Metabolomic profiling of genotype-derived ABO blood group, secretor status, and Lewis antigens and association with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma risk.

The ABO locus is associated with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). Potential metabolic mechanisms underlying these associations have not been investigated. We examined associations between genotype-derived ABO blood group (rs505922 and rs8176746) and 1478 prediagnostic serum metabolites in 4042 participants from 8 nested case-control studies within the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal, and Ovarian Cancer Screening Trial and Alpha-Tocopherol, Beta-Carotene Cancer Prevention Study using linear regression and fixed-effect meta-analysis. We then examined associations between the identified ABO-as
