The effect of fatigue on the muscular and postural response to sudden release of different stoop lifting loads was studied. Ten male volunteers performed a series of stoop lifting trials before and after fatigue of the erector spinae. The analysis of case records of 19,966 children operated on for acute appendicitis at the Belorussian centre of pediatric surgery for 15 years (from 1970 till 1984) is presented. A 53-year-old female visited our hospital because of cervical and abdominal pain preceding fever and upper respiratory symptoms. Severe tenderness was noted over the bilateral sternocleidomastoid muscles, the superior portion of the trapezius muscle, and the umbilical region of the abdomen. The patient reported exacerbation of posterior neck pain in the supine position and during the transition from sitting to the supine position. The diagnosis of epidemic myalgia was finally made. This case highlights the presence of the cervical variant of epidemic myalgia.

This article presents our technique of umbilical reconstruction after the repair of omphalocele and gastroschisis. We have treated 8 patients with an average follow-up period of 13 months (range, 6 approximately 24 months). No major complications have occurred; minor complications have included delayed wound healing, decreased umbilical depth, and hematoma. Our procedure is especially useful for patients who have a midline abdominal scar and relatively intact bilateral rectus abdominis muscles.
