Dyslexia: verbal impairments in the absence of magnocellular impairments.

Sensitivity to dynamic visual and auditory stimuli was assessed in dyslexic children (Grade 7) who at school entrance had suffered from the well-established double-deficit of impaired phonological sensitivity and deficient rapid naming performance. A visual magnocellular deficit was assessed by the coherent motion detection task of the Oxford group. An auditory magnocellular deficit was assessed by the illusory sound movement perception task of Hari and Kiesilä. On both tasks our dyslexic subjects' performance was similar or even better than the performance of normally reading controls. Differ

The influence of lorazepam upon pre- and poststimulus EEG during sleep in man.

Enhancement of beta power in the spontaneous EEG under the influence of benzodiazepine medication is a well known phenomenon under waking conditions as well as during sleep. On the other hand, in certain frequency bands EEG activity following external stimulation is also enhanced. Therefore, the question arises what relationship exists between pre- and poststimulus EEG under the influence of benzodiazepines. Is an augmentation of beta activity during benzodiazepine medication further enhanced when external stimulation is applied? In order to address this question we compared the spectral power

Analgesic effects of dihydrocodeine and tramadol when administered either in the morning or evening.

The aim of the study was to investigate the analgesic effects of two opioids [dihydrocodeine (DHC) and tramadol] when administered either in the morning or evening. The experimental technique used is based on chemosomatosensory event-related potentials (CSSERPs) in response to painful chemical stimuli that are applied to the nasal mucosa. Eighteen healthy volunteers participated in the experiments. The study followed a controlled, randomized, double-blind, sixfold, cross-over design. Thus, each of the three medications (90 mg DHC, 50 mg tramadol, or placebo) was perorally administered to all s

Rhythmic auditory stimulation in generalized epilepsy.

Activation of spike-wave discharges by photic stimulations (PS) and rhythmic auditory stimulations (AS) was investigated in 40 patients with generalized epilepsy and 25 controls. PS produced spike-wave discharges in 23 (55%) and AS in 12 (33%) cases. In 4 patients AS activated spike-wave discharges but PS failed to do so. AS may be occasionally used in generalized epilepsy as an activating method when standard procedures such as hyperventilation and PS fail.

Vestibular, olfactory, and vibratory responses of nucleus basalis prosencephali neurons in pigeons.

Evoked multiple unit responses were recorded through chronically implanted electrodes from the nucleus basalis prosencephali of the pigeon (Columba livia) upon vibratory stimulation of the beak-tip and airborne auditory stimulation, thus confirming earlier anatomical and physiological findings. Electrical stimulation of the olfactory nerve led to similar short latency responses. A specific directional sensitivity to rotatory vestibular stimulation was observed. Pitch motions of the head in the downward direction evoked the most pronounced multi-unit responses. These results support the suggest

Tonic, phasic and cortical arousal in Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome.

This study explored the hypothesis that Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome involves a disturbance in arousal modulation. The experimental group consisted of 20 unmedicated subjects with the Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome, and the control group of 20 subjects with chronic medical illnesses (haemophilia, von Willebrandt's disease and diabetes). There were differences between groups in the manner in which log conductance level changed over time during sound and light habituation experiments involving mild levels of stimulation with the Gilles de la Tourette group showing less change in arousal le

Postnatal development of evoked responses in the auditory cortex of the cat.

Postnatal development of the auditory evoked cortical response was investigated in the cat by laminar field potential analysis. Responses were induced by electrical stimulation of the cochlear nuclear complex and by sonic stimulation under sodium pentobarbital anesthesia. As is well known, the auditory evoked cortical response in adult cats is a diphasic positive-negative wave in the superficial cortical layers and a negative-positive wave in the deeper cortical layers. By contrast, the cortical response in neonatal kittens was a monophasic negative wave in the superficial cortical layers and

Mechanisms and Applications of Transcranial Ultrasound Stimulation in Neurological Disorders and Psychiatric Conditions.

Transcranial ultrasound stimulation (TUS) is an emerging non-invasive neuromodulation strategy with high spatial precision and the ability to target both cortical and deep brain regions. This review summarizes recent progress in low-intensity, non-thermal TUS in representative neurological and psychiatric disorders, including Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, epilepsy, ischemic stroke, depression, anxiety disorders, and schizophrenia. Current preclinical evidence suggests that TUS may alleviate disease-related pathological and functional abnormalities by regulating neurotransmitter rel

Nanophysical Antimicrobial Strategies: A Rational Deployment of Nanomaterials and Physical Stimulations in Combating Bacterial Infections.

The emergence of bacterial resistance due to the evolution of microbes under antibiotic selection pressure, and their ability to form biofilm, has necessitated the development of alternative antimicrobial therapeutics. Physical stimulation, as a powerful antimicrobial method to disrupt microbial structure, has been widely used in food and industrial sterilization. With advances in nanotechnology, nanophysical antimicrobial strategies (NPAS) have provided unprecedented opportunities to treat antibiotic-resistant infections, via a combination of nanomaterials and physical stimulations. In this r

A method for the direct electrical stimulation of the auditory system in deaf subjects: a functional magnetic resonance imaging study.

PURPOSE: To develop a safe functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) procedure for auditory assessment of deaf subjects. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A gold-plated tungsten electrode has been developed which has zero magnetic susceptibility. Used with carbon leads and a carbon reference pad, it enables safe, distortion-free fMRI studies of deaf subjects following direct electrical stimulation of the acoustic nerve. Minor pickup of the radio frequency (RF) pulses by the electrode assembly is difficult to eliminate, and a SPARSE acquisition sequence is used to avoid any effects of unintentional au

Growth hormone promotes hair cell regeneration in the zebrafish (Danio rerio) inner ear following acoustic trauma.

BACKGROUND: Previous microarray analysis showed that growth hormone (GH) was significantly upregulated following acoustic trauma in the zebrafish (Danio rerio) ear suggesting that GH may play an important role in the process of auditory hair cell regeneration. Our objective was to examine the effects of exogenous and endogenous GH on zebrafish inner ear epithelia following acoustic trauma. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We induced auditory hair cell damage by exposing zebrafish to acoustic overstimulation. Fish were then injected intraperitoneally with either carp GH or buffer, and placed in

Cochlear implantation in a child with osteogenesis imperfecta.

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a hereditary disease of connective tissue and affects bone, dentine, sclera, joint, tendon, blood vessels, heart valves, and skin. Approximately 50% of the adult patients with OI have associated hearing impairment. To date, only three cases of cochlear implantation in adults with OI have been reported, but none in children. We present a case of cochlear implantation in a congenitally deaf 6-year-old boy with OI. The Nucleus 24 Contour device was successfully implanted using the suprameatal approach (SMA). At 6 months post-initial stimulation there was no evidenc

Central dopamine hyperactivity in rats mimics abnormal acoustic startle response in schizophrenics.

Schizophrenic patients show loss of the normal inhibition of the acoustic startle response (ASR) when the startle stimulus is preceded by a weak prepulse stimulus. In rats experimentally induced to have locally supersensitive dopamine receptors within forebrain dopamine terminal regions, we find a similar deficit in "prepulse inhibition" of the ASR. Our results suggest that there are intriguing parallels between the aberrant sensory gating of the ASR demonstrated by schizophrenics and that demonstrated by rats during stimulation of supersensitive brain dopamine receptors. Thus, prepulse inhibi

[The promontory test and electrocochleography in deafness caused by mumps].

Contradictory histological findings in patients with deafness following mumps led us to conduct electrophysiological investigations. Promontory testing (PT) and measurement of cochlear microphonics (CM) enabled us to distinguish between neural and sensory deafness. On the basis of a careful history and serological tests in 19 cases of unilateral deafness we found that the hearing loss was probably caused by mumps. In all patients except one auditory sensations could be obtained by electric stimulation of the acoustic nerve whereas no CM were detectable even with strong stimuli of 100 dB tonepi

Physiological and anatomical decomposition of subthalamic neurostimulation effects in essential tremor.

Postural tremor is the leading symptom in essential tremor, but in some cases intention tremor and limb ataxia emerge and can become highly disabling features. Deep brain stimulation of the thalamus or subthalamic white matter improve tremor and ataxia; however, the underlying network mechanisms are enigmatic. To elucidate the mechanisms of deep brain stimulation in essential tremor, we pursued a multimodal approach combining kinematic measures of reach-to-grasp movements, clinical assessments, physiological measures of neuronal excitability and probabilistic tractography from diffusion tensor

Reconstruction of Vocal Fold Medial Surface 3D Trajectories: Effects of Neuromuscular Stimulation and Airflow.

INTRODUCTION: Analysis of medial surface dynamics of the vocal folds (VF) is critical to understanding voice production and treatment of voice disorders. We analyzed VF medial surface vibratory dynamics, evaluating the effects of airflow and nerve stimulation using 3D reconstruction and empirical eigenfunctions (EEF). STUDY DESIGN: In vivo canine hemilarynx phonation. METHODS: An in vivo canine hemilarynx was phonated while graded stimulation of the recurrent and superior laryngeal nerves (RLN and SLN) was performed. For each phonatory condition, vibratory cycles were 3D reconstructed from t

Relationships between the expectations based on the regularity of preceding sound sequences and the medial olivocochlear reflex.

Rhythms are the most natural cue for temporal anticipation because many sounds in our living environment have rhythmic structures. Humans have cortical mechanisms that can predict the arrival of the next sound based on rhythm and periodicity. Herein, we showed that temporal anticipation, based on the regularity of sound sequences, modulates peripheral auditory responses via efferent innervation. The medial olivocochlear reflex (MOCR), a sound-activated efferent feedback mechanism that controls outer hair cell motility, was inferred noninvasively by measuring the suppression of otoacoustic emis
