OBJECTIVE: Chronic otitis media (COM) is a disorder characterized by perforation of the eardrum and hearing loss following chronic inflammation of the middle ear cavity, ossicules, and mastoid cells. Eustachian dysfunction plays an important role in COM etiopathogenesis and postoperative prognosis. The determinants of postoperative prognosis are still being researched. This study aimed to research the prognostic value of acoustic rhinometry (ARM) and rhinomanometry (RMM) in COM surgery in terms of eradication of the infection after operation, graft success, and hearing gain in operated cases.

Acoustic waves are mechanical waves recently used to activate tissue metabolism by exploiting the cell permeabilization caused by their passage. We report a case of a retroauricular lipoma in a 44-year-old woman affected by multiple symmetric lipomatosis and treated with extracorporeal acoustic wave therapy. The adipose thickness of the lipoma was reduced from 35.8 to 21 mm, with increased softness at palpatory examination.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether thymoquinone has any eliminative effects against inner-ear damage caused by acoustic trauma.
METHODS: Thirty-two male rats were divided into four groups. Group 1 was only exposed to acoustic trauma. Group 2 was given thymoquinone 24 hours before acoustic trauma and continued to receive it for 10 days after the trauma. Group 3 was only treated with thymoquinone, for 10 days. Group 4, the control group, suffered no trauma and received saline instead of thymoquinone. Groups 1 and 2 were exposed to acoustic trauma using 105 dB SPL white noise for 4 hours.

INTRODUCTION: The acoustic neuroma is a benign tumour that originates in the vestibular branch of the eighth cranial nerve. The main treatment is surgery, but many authors suggest that with elderly patients or in small neuromas we can opt for watchful waiting.
METHODS: This was a retrospective study from 2007 to 2013 that included 27 patients diagnosed of acoustic neuroma that had not been treated due to the size of the tumour, age and comorbidities, or by patient choice.
