Gastric functions such as adaptive relaxation have usually been monitored in rats using a surgically inserted barostat's balloon. However, surgery causes physiological damage to the rat stomach. This study is an investigation of adaptive relaxation of the rat stomach using a slightly modified balloon, which is introduced into the stomach through the mouth of anesthetized rats without the need for balloon surgery, attached to a brostat. In this case, the balloon was placed between the fore-stomach and the fundus, but towards the fore-stomach. The balloon volume increased gradually just after an

Pathogens, and the infectious diseases they cause, have been paramount among the threats encountered by humans in their expansions throughout the globe. Numerous studies have identified immunity and host defence genes as being among the functions most strongly targeted by selection, most likely pathogen-driven. The dissection of the form and intensity of such selective pressures have increased our knowledge of the biological relevance of the underlying immunological mechanisms in host defence. Although the identities of the specific infectious agents imposing these selective pressures remain,

BACKGROUND: When suddenly immersed in cold water, humans typically exhibit the cold shock response, although training can attenuate hyperventilation. This study extends previous findings by considering the influence of physical activity to maintain buoyancy and subsequent swimming performance.
METHODS: Six inexperienced swimmers (three men and three women; mean age 22.8) received 1 wk of cold-water head-out immersions (10 x 3 min at 15 degrees C) alongside mental skills training to improve their treading water technique and to control hyperventilation upon immersion. Six inexperienced control

Aspergillus fumigatus is currently the major air-borne fungal pathogen. It is able to cause several forms of disease in humans of which invasive aspergillosis is the most severe. The high mortality rate of this disease prompts increased efforts to disclose the basic principles of A. fumigatus pathogenicity. According to our current knowledge, A. fumigatus lacks sophisticated virulence traits; it is nevertheless able to establish infection due to its robustness and ability to adapt to a wide range of environmental conditions. This review focuses on two crucial aspects of invasive aspergillosis:

Chaperone-mediated autophagy (CMA) is a selective lysosomal degradation pathway that links nutrient availability to intracellular proteostasis through the targeted turnover of selective cytosolic proteins. Through this selective control of protein quality, CMA participates in the regulation of metabolic adaptation, cellular homeostasis, and stress responses. CMA is highly responsive to nutritional cues, including caloric restriction (CR), fasting, and changes in macronutrient composition, positioning this pathway as a key mediator of cellular adaptation to metabolic stress. In cancer, CMA disp

Thyroid hormones (THs) are fundamental regulators of skeletal muscle energy metabolism and protein turnover. Instead of directly stimulating muscle growth, they create the intracellular environment required for effective adaptation to exercise. Adequate TH availability supports mitochondrial integrity, ribosome biogenesis, and coordinated protein turnover, thereby enabling the translation of anabolic signaling into structural adaptation and remodeling. Accordingly, reduced translational efficiency during hypothyroidism may blunt hypertrophic responses. In contrast, hyperthyroidism accelerates

Muscle wasting leads to reduced activities of daily living, an increased number of care-dependent individuals, and increased mortality. However, the metabolomic adaptations underlying muscle wasting remain poorly understood. Here, by comparing physiological, genetically induced, pathological, and age-related muscle atrophy, we identify the metabolites modulated by muscle atrophic stimuli, which we term "atrometabolites." Integrated metabolomics reveal that dysfunctional polyamine synthesis is a common feature of muscle atrophy. Mechanistically, we identify that adenosylmethionine decarboxylase

Motor parameters of simple, repetitive actions like tapping, pinching, or pushing a button differ as a function of their action effects - adding a consistent, immediate sound-effect to such actions leads to a decrease in applied force. This action-effect related motor adaptation occurs only, however, when the sound-effect follows actions within about 200 ms, which has been hypothesized to reflect a temporal limit of action-effect integration. Using a university student sample, the present study replicated the effect of action-sound effect delays on force application. Furthermore, given that th

To determine the adaptive capability of saccadic eye movements, and its association with enduring saccadic dysmetria in cerebellar and lateral medullary infarction (LMI), we investigated saccadic accuracy and adaptation in 15 patients with cerebellar or lateral medullary infarction, compared with those of 7 patients with diffuse cerebellar atrophy and 11 normal subjects. Saccade adaptation was elicited by a 37.5% backward target step during the primary saccade in both horizontal directions. Horizontal preadaptive saccadic gains were decreased in patients with cerebellar infarction, and contral

An overview is given on the current classification, description and treatment of chronic pain with causally relevant psychological factors. It is based on the "practice guidelines on somatoform disorders" and on a thematically related meta-analysis. The classificatory problems, especially of the demarcation of somatoform and other chronic pain, are presented. Additional descriptive dimensions of the relevant psychosocial factors are: pain description, other organically unexplained pain- and non-pain-symptoms, anxiety and depression, disease conviction and illness behaviour, personality and chi

I must ask the reader's indulgence for this article's concern with applications of the stress concept, which are distinct from, although related to clinical medicine. It has not been my object to deal with the way physicians have been aided by stress research in the practice of medicine--that information is already widely available. Rather, I have attempted to sketch briefly the history of the stress theory and to demonstrate how this information can help anyone, physician or layman, lead a more complete and satisfying life. The applications of the stress theory have been dealt with at length

Salmonella remains a leading cause of foodborne illness worldwide and imposes substantial public health and economic burdens, particularly due to its persistence in food production systems. This persistence is driven not only by antimicrobial resistance but also by adaptive survival strategies, including stress tolerance that allows the cells to endure sublethal and lethal stresses encountered across the farm-to-fork continuum. Quantitative characterization of these phenotypes is crucial for understanding pathogen survival dynamics and strain-specific variability, thereby improving food safety

BACKGROUND: Chronic exposure to sleep deprivation, insufficient recovery, inadequate energy availability, extreme environmental conditions, repetitive high-intensity exercise, and psychological threat can alter hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis function. Acute activation of the HPA axis is adaptive, whereas prolonged or repetitive activation may contribute to allostatic load, altered daily glucocorticoid exposure, and changes associated with psychological and metabolic maladaptation.
METHODS: This narrative review synthesizes evidence on adrenal steroid metabolism under extreme physic

Remorins (REMs) are plant-specific proteins known for their diverse biological functions. However, their roles in plant growth, development, and responses to abiotic stress remain largely unexplored. In this study, we investigated the function of BrREM1.4 (PQ810929), a protein isolated from the turnip (Brassica rapa) cv. Tsuda in growth, development, and resistance to saline-alkaline stress. Quantitative PCR analysis revealed that BrREM1.4 showed tissue-specific expression, with the highest levels detected in the petals. The transcription levels of BrREM1.4 in turnip seedlings (1-7 days old) w

Crop production is continually exposed to a wide range of abiotic stresses that negatively affect growth and yield, posing a severe threat to global food security. Plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) promote nutrient assimilation, activate antioxidant enzymes, and stimulate phytohormone production to mitigate abiotic stress. However, the effective application of PGPB in the field depends on host colonization, soil specificity, and susceptibility to competitive microbial communities. Recently, non-thermal plasma (NTP) has emerged as a revolutionary tool for sustainable agriculture, making it

Fungal species thrive in diverse ecological niches and must dynamically adjust their metabolism, growth, and development in response to environmental fluctuations. Transcriptional regulation plays a pivotal role in these adaptive processes, with Zn2Cys6 transcription factors constituting the largest family of fungal-specific regulators that orchestrate metabolism, development, and pathogenicity. Among these, AcuK and AcuM represent a distinct subfamily with diverse key regulatory functions. In this review, we provide a comprehensive analysis of AcuK and AcuM functions across various fungal spe

Pregnancy induces a wide range of physiological changes in the respiratory system that significantly affect pulmonary function and gas exchange. These changes are mediated by both mechanical factors-such as the expanding uterus and elevation of the diaphragm-and hormonal influences, particularly from progesterone, estrogen, relaxin, and prostaglandins. Progesterone and estrogen increase minute ventilation and reduce arterial PaCO2, while relaxin enhances ligamentous flexibility, allowing ribcage expansion to accommodate the growing fetus. Anatomical adaptations, including diaphragm elevation a

Previous studies on the effects of intensified training on sleep quality/quantity have been somewhat contradictory. Moreover, recreational athletes often track various sleep metrics, and those metrics' actual connections to training adaptations are unknown. This study explored the effects of intensified training on sleep and nightly recovery along with their associations with training adaptations. A total of 24 participants (10 females) performed a 3-week baseline training period (BL), a 2-week overload period (OL), and a 1-week recovery period (REC), which were followed by test days (T1-T3).
