Pigmented concealing powders for the hair loss patient.

Patients suffering from alopecia may experience low self-esteem, low self-image, and other psychological consequences. While medical and surgical options for treating hair loss exist, these may be prohibitively expensive or have an unpredictable outcome. In lieu of or in addition to therapeutic approaches, cosmetic options have long been an approach to hair loss. However, patients and clinicians alike often regard cosmetic options to be limited to hairstyling and hairpieces, unaware that newer options, namely pigmented concealing powders, may offer a more practical and seemingly natural camouf

Towards a perfect vehicle(s) for diagnostic patch testing: an overview.

The correct selection of vehicles for patch testing is crucial in evaluating suspected allergic contact dermatitis. We reviewed literature by searching Pubmed and Embase for the years 1971-2011 utilizing the subjects "vehicle," "allergic contact dermatitis" and "patch test" for advances in knowledge of vehicles." A universal optimal vehicle more efficient than petrolatum remains undiscovered. Literature provides research supporting alternate vehicles for specific allergens and insights on vehicle characteristics, such as influence on bioavailability of chemicals and subsequent percutaneous abs

Adverse reaction of topical etofenamate: petechial eruption.

Etofenamate is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). Clinical findings caused by etofenamate are uncommon. Allergic contact dermatitis is the most common cutaneous reaction reported. But petechial eruption due to etofenamate had not been reported yet. This report concerns an 11-year old male with petechial eruption after application of topical etofenamate. Physicians need to be aware that patients can develop an asymptomatic purpuric eruption when etofenamate is ordered.

Recurrence of primary aldosteronism after percutaneous ethanol injection.

Adrenalectomy is the definite treatment for aldosterone-producing adenoma (APA). Percutaneous ethanol or acetic acid injection with computed tomography (CT) guidance has been described as a safe, noninvasive, and effective alternative treatment modality in patients with high surgical risk. We report on a man who was 49 years of age and presented with treatment-resistant hypertension and was later diagnosed with APA. CT-guided percutaneous ethanol injection (PEI) was performed for this high surgical risk patient. He had aldosteronism recurrence 4 years after the ethanol injection, so a second P

Optimizing topical therapies for treating psoriasis: a consensus conference.

In 2010, an expert committee of physicians and researchers in the field of dermatology working together as the Psoriasis Process of Care Consensus Panel developed consensus guidelines for the treatment of psoriasis. As much as possible, the guidelines were evidence based but also included the extensive clinical experience of the dermatologists. Psoriasis is a lifelong disease that requires long-term treatment and 80% of psoriasis patients have mild to moderate disease. Topical therapies play an important role in the treatment of psoriasis, especially in patients with mild to moderate disease.

[Ureteral endometriosis in estrogen-treated postmenopausal woman].

A 56-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital due to gross hematuria. Cystoscopy and contrast-enhanced abdominal CT scan revealed a solid tumor at the right terminal ureter. She underwent transurethral resection of the right ureteral tumor. The ureteral tumor included proliferative endometrial stroma and glands under urothelial cells, and the histopathological diagnosis was ectopic endometriosis. Before the surgery, the patient had underwent hormone replacement therapy using estrogen patches to treat menopausal disorders, however, the dose of estrogen was five times higher than regular dose

Treatment of pain in Dercum's disease with Lidoderm (lidocaine 5% patch): a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Dercum's disease is a rare disorder characterized by multiple painful subcutaneous lipomas on the trunk and extremities. It most commonly occurs in obese, postmenopausal women. The pain associated with this condition is postulated to arise from enlarging lipomas producing pressure on peripheral nerves, thereby initiating pain and sometimes paresthesias. Treatment has been challenging due to the rarity of this condition. CASE: A patient with Dercum's disease successfully treated with transdermal lidocaine 5% patches. The patient's pain was initially rated as an 8/10. At follow-up

Cutaneous localized annular chromoblastomycosis.

Chromoblastomycosis (CBM) is a difficult-to-treat dermal mycosis characterized by the presence of round, pigmented, sclerotic bodies formed by black fungi found in polymorphic lesions. According to the morphology of a lesion, different clinical types of the disease have been described. We present three patients who each developed a single, 10-cm diameter, 8 to 15-year-old, well-circumscribed, slow-growing, annular, papulosquamous or papulosquamous-verrucous lesion, with no regression despite the use of topical antifungals. Skin scrapings and biopsies confirmed CBM and microculture defined the

Seligiline transdermal system in depression.

Seligiline, a monoamine oxidase inhibitor, has been previously approved by the US FDA for adjunctive treatment of Parkinson's disease. At present, it has been found to be effective in a transdermal system when administered daily in the treatment of major depressive disorder. The minimum dosage of 6 mg/24 h was effective in two trials; this dosage did not require any dietary precautions. Higher doses of 9 mg/24 h and 12 mg/24 h may also not require restrictions, however, current data is insufficient. Furthermore, a randomized 52-week prevention study found significant benefits for continuance o

Follicular penetration of topically applied caffeine via a shampoo formulation.

AIMS: Follicular drug delivery is the prerequisite for an effective treatment of androgenetic alopecia or other reasons of premature hair loss. METHODS: The follicular penetration of caffeine, applied topically in a shampoo formulation for 2 min, was measured with highly sensitive surface ionization in combination with mass spectroscopy, a selective method for the detection of very small quantities of transcutaneously absorbed substances in the blood. An experimental protocol, developed to selectively block the follicular pathway within the test area, was used. Based on this principle, a clea

Topical tacrolimus for the treatment of lichen simplex chronicus.

Owing to severe itching and scratching, the natural course of lichen simplex chronicus (LSC) is clinically characterized by typical lichenoid lesions. Topical corticosteroids are often used to treat LSC but after withdrawal a relapse will sometimes occur. Therefore, LSC can be difficult to treat over time. We report a 13-year-old boy suffering from LSC on two symmetrical circumscribed areas on the temple, whose lesions healed completely with tacrolimus 0.1% ointment within approximately 9 months. During active treatment no adverse drug reaction was observed. The patient is completely free of s

Transdermal delivery of a pineal hormone: melatonin via elastic liposomes.

Melatonin (MT) is a good candidate for transdermal delivery considering its short biological half-life, low molecular weight and a variable oral absorption. The objective of this work was to develop a novel formulation of melatonin for its efficient transdermal delivery. Melatonin loaded elastic liposomal formulation was prepared, characterized and the effect of this developed formulation on the in vitro permeation of melatonin across human cadaver skin was investigated, using a locally fabricated Franz diffusion cell. Skin permeation potential of the developed formulation was assessed using c

The use of topical azelaic acid for common skin disorders other than inflammatory rosacea.

Topical azelaic acid (AzA) is approved for the treatment of acne vulgaris and inflammatory (papulopustular) rosacea. Because of diverse mechanisms of action that correlate with potential therapeutic benefit, AzA has been used to treat several common dermatoses including acne vulgaris, inflammatory rosacea, erythematotelangiectatic rosacea, perioral dermatitis, melasma, and postinflammatory hyperpigmentation. This article reviews the therapeutic use of topical AzA for the treatment of common skin disorders other than the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved indications of acne vulgari

Transdermal androgens: pharmacology and applicability to hypogonadal elderly men.

Transdermal testosterone (T) gels have proven to be an efficacious means of delivering T to hypogonadal men. Patches, gels and creams have been used in T transdermal formulations. Patches suffered from problems either with adherence or skin irritability while gels have a potential problem of transferability from patients to partner or other family member. At present, gels have been well received by clinicians and users. There is no evidence that transdermal preparations are not suitable for treatment of older hypogonadal men; the rapid off time of both patches and gels may argue allow that tra

Safety and efficacy of fluticasone propionate in the topical treatment of skin diseases.

Fluticasone propionate - the first carbothioate corticosteroid - has been classified as a potent anti-inflammatory drug for dermatological use. It is available as 0.05% cream and 0.005% ointment formulations for the acute and maintenance treatment of patients with dermatological disorders such as atopic dermatitis, psoriasis and vitiligo. This glucocorticoid is characterized by high lipophilicity, high glucocorticoid receptor binding and activation, and a rapid metabolic turnover in skin. Although skin blanching following fluticasone propionate exceeds that of corticosteroids of medium strengt
