Background: Pathological angiogenesis and stromal fibrosis after ocular chemical injury are primary drivers of corneal opacification and permanent vision loss. Topical administration of anti-VEGFA antibody is hampered by rapid tear clearance and poor penetration across the corneal epithelial barrier, resulting in insufficient intraocular drug accumulation and suboptimal therapeutic efficacy. Although intraocular injection elevates local drug concentration, this invasive procedure carries risks of complications and is not suitable for long-term repeated treatment. This study constructed red cab

Recent studies have demonstrated that antioxidants like lutein considerably lower the prevalence of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), which has been connected to blindness in numerous older adults. By halting oxidation, antioxidants reduce the damage that free radicals do. However, the short residence time, low stability, and poor solubility of lutein limit their ocular bioavailability following topical application. This study aimed to develop and characterize a micelle nanogel formulation for the ocular delivery of lutein. The micelle nanogel delivery system suggests a novel therapeutic

Ocular surface inflammation due to allergy and blepharitis can lead to corneal complications and visual impairment. The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of a cyclosporin 0.1% topical treatment achieving steroid-sparing. Eighty pediatric patients with moderate and severe vernal and blepharitis-related keratoconjunctivitis were included. Symptoms (photosensitivity, itching, discharge, tearing), signs (corneal fluorescein staining, papillary hypertrophy) and patients' subjective assessment were evaluated during a 6-month follow-up. At the follow-up, all patients treated with topical

Pathological neovascularization in retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) can cause visual impairment in preterm infants. Current ROP treatments which are not preventative and only address late neovascular ROP, are costly and can lead to severe complications. We showed that topical 0.1% dexamethasone eye drops administered prior to peak neovessel formation prevented neovascularization in five extremely preterm infants at high risk for ROP and suppressed neovascularization by 30% in mouse oxygen-induced retinopathy (OIR) modeling ROP. In contrast, in OIR, topical dexamethasone treatment before any ne

INTRODUCTION: Various adjuvant therapies have been used to prevent recurrence after pterygium excision. However, no single agent has been proven to be a gold standard for completely preventing recurrence with no associated complications.
PURPOSE: This study aims to compare the recurrence rate following preoperative topical mitomycin C (MMC) and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) eye drops in pterygium excision surgery.
METHODS: In this interventional longitudinal comparative study, 90 patients with primary pterygium attending the Ophthalmology Clinic were enrolled and randomized into three equal groups o

Mucosal vaccines have the advantages of ease of administration and the induction of strong mucosal immunity and a systemic immune response. Recently, the eye mucosa has been shown to be an effective and safe alternative vaccination route against influenza, Toxoplasma gondii infection, and hemolytic uremic syndrome in mice. In this study, we showed that the commercially available human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccine, Cervarix, induced significant immune reactions in terms of anti-HPV antigen (Ag)-specific immunoglobulin G (IgG) and IgA antibody production following eyedrop (ED) vaccination in mi

Niosomes have been reported as possible approach to improve the low corneal penetration and bioavailability characteristics for many drugs. The purpose of this study was to prepare and characterize an effective ocular niosomal hydrogel containing 0.5% (w/v) atenolol which is β1 adrenoceptor blocker for treatment of glaucoma. Thin film hydration method was used for the preparation of niosomes using Span 60 and cholesterol at different molar ratios. Niosomes were characterized using laser diffraction particle size analyzer, transmission electron microscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry.

Sjögren's syndrome (SS) is an autoimmune epithelitis which usually presents with mouth and eye dryness. Although the place of systemic drugs in keratoconjunctivitis sicca treatment has been discussed, the efficacy of some topical drugs has also been demonstrated; however, there are contradictory results related to topical cyclosporine A. We aimed to investigate the efficacy of 0.05 % topical cyclosporine A in patients with keratoconjunctivitis sicca due to primary and secondary SS. This prospective study included 26 patients with a diagnosis of primary and secondary SS who visited our rheumato

PURPOSE: Topical antibacterial agents, used as an off-label indication, are frequently administered pre- and postoperatively to prevent endophthalmitis. We compared topical treatment with fluoroquinolone (FQ) anti-infectives to non-FQ antibacterial agents to prevent Staphylococcus aureus endophthalmitis. We hypothesize that FQ anti-infectives are more effective than non-FQ antibacterial agents for preventing endophthalmitis.

The treatment of primary Sjögren's syndrome (SS) is based principally on the management of sicca features and systemic manifestations. Sicca manifestations are treated symptomatically through administration of topical therapies, such as saliva substitutes and artificial tears; in patients with residual salivary gland function, stimulation of salivary flow with a sialogogue is the therapy of choice. The management of extraglandular features must be tailored to the specific organ or organs involved; however, limited data have been obtained from controlled trials in SS to guide the treatment of s
