Perceived pubertal timing and borderline personality pathology in female adolescent inpatients.

Borderline personality pathology typically onsets during adolescence. An important consideration in understanding adolescent psychopathology is pubertal development. Perceived pubertal timing is one facet of puberty that is especially relevant to adolescent psychopathology, especially when timing is perceived to be early. Despite links between early pubertal timing and core features of borderline personality disorder, and between early pubertal timing and disruptions in the interpersonal context, perceived pubertal timing has yet to be studied in relation to adolescent borderline pathology. [Association of adolescent dating violence as victim or perpetrator with childhood maltreatment].

BACKGROUND: Childhood maltreatment extends beyond this stage of development, impacting adolescence and adulthood, and even adolescent dating violence. Adolescence is an essential transitional stage, so dating violence puts development at risk. In Chile, studies on adolescent dating violence are just emerging and still show a gap. AIM: To examine the relationship between abuse during childhood with victimization and perpetration experiences for adolescent dating violence. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The sample consisted of 242 adolescents between 14 and 19 years of age (59% females) who completed t

Parenting Behaviors, Parent Heart Rate Variability, and Their Associations with Adolescent Heart Rate Variability.

Adolescence is a potentially important time in the development of emotion regulation and parenting behaviors may play a role. We examined associations among parenting behaviors, parent resting heart rate variability, adolescent resting heart rate variability and parenting behaviors as moderators of the association between parent and adolescent resting heart rate variability. Ninety-seven youth (11-17 years; 49.5 % female; 34 % African American, 37.1 % Euro-American, 22.6 % other/mixed ethnic background, and 7.2 % Hispanic) and their parents (n = 81) completed a physiological assessment and que

Brain Similarity as a Protective Factor in the Longitudinal Pathway Linking Household Chaos, Parenting, and Substance Use.

BACKGROUND: Socioecological factors such as family environment and parenting behaviors contribute to the development of substance use. While biobehavioral synchrony has been suggested as the foundation for resilience that can modulate environmental effects on development, the role of brain similarity that attenuates deleterious effects of environmental contexts has not been clearly understood. We tested whether parent-adolescent neural similarity-the level of pattern similarity between parent-adolescent functional brain connectivity representing the level of attunement within each dyad-moderat

High Betrayal Adolescent Sexual Abuse and Nonsuicidal Self-Injury: The Role of Depersonalization in Emerging Adults.

Adolescent sexual abuse can interfere with healthy development. Sexual abuse that is perpetrated by close other(s)-high betrayal-can be additionally harmful, with sexual abuse being linked with dissociation and nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI). Depersonalization, a dissociative subtype characterized by disconnection between oneself and one's body and/or thoughts, may further explain the role of dissociation in NSSI. The purpose of the current study was to: 1) isolate the impact of adolescent sexual abuse on NSSI; and 2) examine depersonalization as a pathway between high betrayal adolescent sexu

Prevention of high-risk behaviors in adolescent women.

PURPOSE: To better delineate the impact of health risk behaviors on adolescent women's current and future health and development. METHOD: The Commonwealth Fund Survey of Adolescent Health, a national survey of adolescents in Grades 5-12 designed to better understand their health and health care needs, was used as the basis for this study. Survey data were collected in 1997 from a total of 6730 adolescents (3568 females, 3162 males). Areas examined include smoking, drinking, use of other drugs, violence, safety, reproductive risks, and the prevention of risk behaviors in adolescent women. RES

Adolescent obesity and maternal and paternal sensitivity and monitoring.

OBJECTIVE: To determine if adolescent obesity is associated with parenting characterized by lower sensitivity and lower monitoring of adolescent activities. METHODS: We used data from 744 adolescents in the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development. Height and weight were measured at age 15½ years and obesity defined as body mass index ≥ 95th percentile for age and sex. Maternal and paternal sensitivity were assessed by direct observation of a parent-adolescent interaction task. Maternal and paternal monitoring were assessed by pa

The adolescent with end-stage renal disease.

The adolescent with ESRD is frequently immature in relationship to chronological age. Growth and pubertal development are major concerns for the adolescent with ESRD. If renal failure had its onset prior to adolescence, it is likely that puberty will be delayed and ultimate adult height retarded for the patient requiring ESRD care during the adolescent period. Non-compliance with the therapeutic regimen is a major clinical problem encountered in the management of the adolescent. Significant morbidity can result from non-compliance with the dialysis regimen and non-compliance is a major cause o

Female reproductive abnormalities in mouse adolescent pregnancy.

There are around 300 million adolescent pregnancies worldwide, accounting for 11% of all births worldwide. Accumulating evidence demonstrates that many adverse perinatal outcomes are associated with adolescent pregnancies. However, how and why these abnormalities occur remain to be defined. In this study, pregnancy at different stages was compared between 25- and 30- day-old and mature female mice. We found that the litter size of adolescent pregnancy is significantly decreased from F1 to F3 generations compared to mature pregnancy. On days 8 and 12 of pregnancy, multiple abnormalities in deci

Mu or delta opioid receptor antagonists increase the expression of social conditioned place preference in early adolescent mice.

RATIONALE: Social behaviors undergo dramatic changes during adolescence, enabling the development of adult social abilities. These changes are intricately linked to the development of the brain reward system and the activity of endogenous opioid signaling. However, the involvement of the opioid system in the development of social behaviors still raises more questions than answers. OBJECTIVES: Here, we investigated the role of the endogenous opioid system in the rewarding effects of social contact in early and late adolescent male mice. METHODS: Social reward was assessed using the social con

Fathers of infants born to adolescent mothers. A study of paternal characteristics.

Fifty-one males and 192 female subjects participated in an investigation of the characteristics of fathers of infants born to mothers aged younger than 18 years. Fathers were categorized by age: younger than 20 years v older than 20 years. Another group of older fathers paired with older women (greater than or equal to 20 years) was included for comparison. The older fathers paired with adolescent mothers were more similar to adolescent fathers than to older men paired with older women. The major differences between the adolescent partners and older partners of adolescent mothers occurred in t

Selective screening for gestational diabetes mellitus in adolescent pregnancies.

OBJECTIVE: It is unclear whether it is cost-effective to universally screen adolescent gravidas for gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Our objective was to identify the prevalence of gestational diabetes in our adolescent population and to review risk factors that would most easily identify a subset of adolescent patients at greatest risk for the development of gestational diabetes. METHODS: Six hundred thirty-two adolescents were identified from 11,486 deliveries in our institution through International Classification of Diseases (9th edition) codes. Eleven of those adolescents had GDM. Th

Theory of Planned Behavior in School-Based Adolescent Problem Gambling Prevention: A Conceptual Framework.

Given its serious implications for psychological and socio-emotional health, the prevention of problem gambling among adolescents is increasingly acknowledged as an area requiring attention. The theory of planned behavior (TPB) is a well-established model of behavior change that has been studied in the development and evaluation of primary preventive interventions aimed at modifying cognitions and behavior. However, the utility of the TPB has yet to be explored as a framework for the development of adolescent problem gambling prevention initiatives. This paper first examines the existing empir

Fructose induces hepatic steatosis in adolescent mice linked to the disorders of lipid metabolism, bile acid metabolism, and autophagy.

The effects of excessive fructose intake on the development and progression of metabolic disorders have received widespread attention. However, the deleterious effects of fructose on the development of hepatic metabolic disease in adolescents and its potential mechanisms are not fully understood. In this study, we investigated the effects of isocaloric fructose-rich diets on the liver of adolescent mice. The results showed that fructose-rich diets had no effect on the development of obesity in the adolescent mice, but did induce hepatic lipid accumulation. Besides, we found that fructose-rich

Adolescent Binge Ethanol Exposure Confers Lasting Adult Alcohol Tolerance due to Neuroimmune Activation: Reversal by Inhibition of HMGB1.

Epidemiological studies suggest heavy adolescent binge drinking is strongly associated with later development of an alcohol use disorder (AUD). Alcohol tolerance (i.e., an acquired reduction in acute alcohol responsivity) is a universally recognized symptom of AUD, but the direct contribution of adolescent binge drinking to adult alcohol tolerance is poorly understood. To investigate the contributions of adolescent binge ethanol exposure to lasting acquisition of acute tolerance, we used our ethanol response battery (ERB) to assess intoxication rating, hypothermia, motor coordination and balan

Preventing Adolescent Pregnancy.

The problem of high rates of unintended adolescent pregnancy in the United States continues unchecked. The author discusses efforts to prevent adolescent pregnancy and to ameliorate its effects, including sex education, community outreach and clinical services, and the development of innovative local programs. Other approaches include counseling, use of social learning theory, use of developmental theory, skills building, and self-concept development.

The sex-specific role of adrenal androgens in youth psychopathology.

Adolescence is a vulnerable period for the emergence of mental health problems. Adrenarche, an early stage of pubertal development marked by rising adrenal androgens, particularly dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), may influence emotional and behavioral development. However, longitudinal evidence linking early-adolescent endocrine influences to adolescent psychopathology remains limited. Using data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study (up to N = 11 696), we analyzed whether salivary DHEA during early adolescence predicted later externalizing and internalizing symptoms durin

Involvement of brain-derived neurotrophic factor methylation in the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus induced by chronic unpredictable mild stress in male mice.

Early life stress alters brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) promoter IV methylation and BDNF expression, which is closely related to the pathophysiological process of depression. However, the role of abnormal methylation of BDNF induced by stress during adolescence due to depression has not yet been clarified. In this study, adolescent mice were exposed to chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS). Depression-like behaviors, BDNF promoter IV methylation, expression of DNA methyltransferases (DNMTs), demethylation machinery enzymes, BDNF protein levels, and neuronal development in the pref

Adolescent THC exposure in female rats leads to cognitive deficits through a mechanism involving chromatin modifications in the prefrontal cortex.

BACKGROUND: Increasing cannabis consumption among adolescents, studies that link its early use with mental illnesses, and the political debate on cannabis legalization together call for an urgent need to study molecular underpinnings of adolescent brain vulnerability. The emerging role of epigenetic mechanisms in psychiatric diseases led us to hypothesize that epigenetic alterations could play a role in causes and subsequent development of the depressive/psychotic-like phenotype induced by adolescent, but not adult, Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) exposure in female rats. METHODS: We performed
