A Thematic Qualitative Synthesis on the Lived Experiences of Patients With Left Ventricular Assist Devices: A Journey From Vulnerability to Resilience.

BACKGROUND: Left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) are increasingly used in managing advanced heart failure. While their clinical benefits are well documented, less is known about how patients experience living with such life-sustaining devices. Understanding these experiences is essential for holistic, person-centred nursing care. AIM: To explore the lived experiences of LVAD recipients and examine how they cope with the emotional, psychological and social challenges of life with an LVAD. STUDY DESIGN: A systematic search was conducted across Scopus, PubMed and ScienceDirect using predefin

The effect of telephone-based interpersonal psychotherapy for the treatment of postpartum depression: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Substantial data indicate potential health consequences of untreated postpartum depression (PPD) on the mother, infant, and family. Studies have evaluated interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) as treatment for PPD; however, the results are questionable due to methodological limitations. A comprehensive review of maternal treatment preferences suggests that mothers favor 'talking therapy' as a form of PPD treatment. Unfortunately, IPT is not widely available, especially in rural and remote areas. To improve access to care, telepsychiatry has been introduced, including the provision of t

Expert consensus on the management of peripheral neuropathy in patients with lymphoma on brentuximab vedotin.

PURPOSE: Brentuximab vedotin (BV) represents a therapeutic advancement in the treatment of CD30-positive lymphomas, yet its clinical utility is often limited by BV-induced peripheral neuropathy (PN). Currently, evidence-based, BV-specific guidelines for the assessment and management of PN are scarce, resulting in variability in clinical practice. This study aimed to establish international expert consensus on the optimal assessment, monitoring and management strategies for BV-induced PN in patients with lymphoma. METHODS: A modified Delphi panel was conducted, engaging a total of 13 experts f

"Those eyes that look at you:" somatic modes of care in professional encounters with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis patients.

In the advanced stages of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), individuals experience a gradual and irreversible loss of speech and voluntary movement, while cognitive and emotional capacities often remain largely preserved. ALS frequently culminates in the locked-in state (LIS), where subjectivity endures despite an almost complete breakdown of expressive capacity. This article examines how professional caregivers sustain relational engagement and recognition under such conditions. The analysis draws on eleven qualitative interviews with social workers, psychologists, occupational therapists,

Holistic care in inflammatory bowel disease: is it in REACH?

There is a growing body of evidence supporting the value of multidisciplinary teams in delivering comprehensive, holistic care for individuals with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Members of this team often include gastroenterologists, psychologists, nurses, dieticians, and other specialists and allied healthcare professionals, each of whom have a significant role in the treatment of IBD and its associated complications. Common symptoms that impact quality of life include persistent abdominal pain, fatigue, urgency, sleep disturbances, and mood disorders. Holistic care models are particularl

What predicts collective dedication in health professions education? A path analysis among health and social care students.

BACKGROUND: In health professions education, cultivating commitment to collaborative practice is essential. However, collective dedication as a desired outcome in interprofessional education (IPE) often remains overlooked. Psychological factors contributing to team members' collective dedication are poorly understood within health professions collaborative learning environments. This study examined relationships among team psychological factors (interdependence, relatedness, efficacy, and potency) and their influence on collective dedication in an IPE context. METHOD: Data were from 236 under

Privileging Midwives for Abortion Care.

Since the US Supreme Court overturned Dobbs v Jackson, expanded access to abortion has been critical. Abortion is safe, and related complications are rare. The safety of abortion provision by advanced practice clinicians (APCs) is well documented. Despite the increase in targeted restrictions for patients and clinicians in many states post-Dobbs, in recent years there have been meaningful gains in recognition and codification of abortion as part of an expanded scope of practice for APCs. Thus, creating a formal written pathway for midwives to obtain privileges in abortion provision could also

Management of opioid use disorder and associated conditions among hospitalized adults: A Consensus Statement from the Society of Hospital Medicine.

Hospital-based clinicians frequently care for patients with opioid withdrawal or opioid use disorder (OUD) and are well-positioned to identify and initiate treatment for these patients. With rising numbers of hospitalizations related to opioid use and opioid-related overdose, the Society of Hospital Medicine convened a working group to develop a Consensus Statement on the management of OUD and associated conditions among hospitalized adults. The guidance statement is intended for clinicians practicing medicine in the inpatient setting (e.g., hospitalists, primary care physicians, family physic

Respiratory depression in the post-anesthesia care unit: Mayo Clinic experience.

The anesthesia recovery is a complex physiologic process as systems recover from the effects of surgery and anesthesia. Inadequate recovery of respiratory physiology can lead to severe hypoxemia-induced end-organ damage and even death. Emerging evidence suggests that signs of respiratory depression during early anesthesia recovery may portend increased risk for future severe adverse events. This article briefly reviews the Mayo Clinic research experience and advances in clinical practice. From the implementation of a step-down model of discharge criteria in the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU)

Quality of Life among Female Cancer Survivors in Africa: An Integrative Literature Review.

Quality of life (QOL) has been studied extensively among cancer populations in high income countries where cancer care resources are available to many. Little is known concerning the QOL of cancer groups residing in Africa where resources can be scarce. The integrative review of the literature explored and critically examined studies that had addressed QOL in female cancer survivors in Africa. The extent to which QOL studies incorporated a cultural perspective was also examined. Research studies published between 2005 and 2015 were retrieved from five databases: CINAHL, MEDLINE, SCOPUS, ProQue

Improving Health Equity in Hypertension Control for Black Patients.

BACKGROUND: Hypertension is a significant risk factor for cardiovascular disease, which remains the leading cause of death in the United States. Inequities in blood pressure control and cardiovascular mortality are seen across racial and ethnic groups. One health network, a not-for-profit integrated system in the Southeastern United States, identified a disparity in population-level rates of attainment of hypertension control in their Black adult patients. About 65% of Black patients achieved blood pressure goal, defined as < 140/90 mmHg, compared to 75.6% of patients in other populations. The

Where and how must we perform noninvasive mechanical ventilation?

The classic experience of mechanical ventilation (MV) has recently been integrated with the use of devices providing noninvasive ventilatory assistance in the Intermediate Intensive Care Unit (IICU), to which patients suffering from acute on chronic respiratory insufficiency may be admitted for therapy. Noninvasive mechanical ventilation (NMV) has been demonstrated to be mandatory during severe relapses of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This method of ventilation can reduce mortality, morbidity and time spent in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) when related to standard medical ther
