The aim of this study was to evaluate transmission of Brucella abortus biotype 1 via sexual intercourse in rats. Male and female virgin Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were experimentally infected intraperitoneally with 1×10(9)colony forming units (CFU) of B. abortus biotype 1, a Korean bovine isolate. BACKGROUND: In August 2006, a case of leptospirosis occurred in an athlete after a triathlon held around Heidelberg and in the Neckar river. In order to study a possible outbreak and to determine risk factors for infection an epidemiological investigation was performed.

Patients with high fever and multiorgan involvement were investigated for the determination of frequency, clinical course and complications of leptospirosis in Istanbul. A latex agglutination test employing monoclonal antibody specific to a 30-kDa protein of Burkholderia pseudomallei was used to detect the organisms in blood culture specimens from 1,139 patients with community-acquired septicemia. Four technics were compared to find the most suitable screening test for the cytomegalovirus (CMV) antibody status in blood donors. One hundred thirty-five donor samples were tested by two enzyme immunoassays, EIA(Litton) and EIA(Abbott), and by latex agglutination (LA) and complement fixation (CF). The seroreactivity of the tests were judged by concordance of three or more methods. The authors found that the test performance of the EIA(Litton) could be improved with adjustment of sample color variation, which increased the test sensitivity and specificity from 48.8% and 87.2% to 83.8% and 96.

Stray dogs (n=207), suspected canine cases of leptospirosis (n=50) and rats (n=200) from the Caribbean island of Trinidad were subjected to the Microscopic Agglutination Test (MAT) for leptospirosis. A new, solid-phase enzymatic technique is proposed for the detection and measurement of rheumatoid factors (RF). Two cases of Waldenström's macroglobulinaemia have been seen at University College Hospital, Ibadan in the last four years, Case 1 was a 30-year-old soldier who presented with splenomegaly and anaemia, was treated with chlorambucil, and had a complete remission sustained for over two years. Case 2 was a 58-year-old retired civil servant who presented with very severe anaemia and also splenomegaly, and died within three weeks of admission. Both patients had most of the typical features of Waldenström's disease, including retinal changes and serum IgM levels of 4200 and 5500 mg/dl respectively.

Thirty-eight patients with fungemia were examined prospectively for development of endophthalmitis. Endophthalmitis was present in 10 of 27 (37%) patients with Candida albicans fungemia. Only one patients with nonalbicans fungemia developed endophthalmitis. Of the preselected factors studied, only hemodialysis and parenteral hyperalimentation correlated with an increased incidence of endophthalmitis.
