Determination of low molecular weight alcohols including fusel oil in various samples by diethyl ether extraction and capillary gas chromatography.

Low molecular weight alcohols including fusel oil were determined using diethyl ether extraction and capillary gas chromatography. Twelve kinds of alcohols were successfully resolved on the HP-FFAP (polyethylene glycol) capillary column. The diethyl ether extraction method was very useful for the analysis of alcohols in alcoholic beverages and biological samples with excellent cleanliness of the resulting chromatograms and high sensitivity compared to the direct injection method. Calibration graphs for all standard alcohols showed good linearity in the concentration range used, 0.001-2% (w/v) …

Conversion of alcohols, thiols, and trimethysilyl ethers to alkyl cyanides using triphenylphosphine/2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyanobenzoquinone/n-Bu(4)NCN.

Triphenylphosphine and 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyanobenzoquinone afford an adduct, which in the presence of n-Bu(4)NCN converts alcohols, thiols, and trimethylsilyl ethers into their corresponding alkyl cyanides in good to excellent yields at room temperature. This method is highly selective for the conversion of 1 degrees alcohols in the presence of 2 degrees and 3 degrees ones, thiols and silyl ethers.

Chemistry of N-Boc-N-tert-butylthiomethyl-protected alpha-aminoorganostannanes: diastereoselective synthesis of primary beta-amino alcohols from alpha-aminoorganostannanes.

Reaction of N-Boc-N-tert-butylthiomethyl-protected alpha-aminoorganostannanes with n-BuLi generates the corresponding alpha-aminoorganolithiums. Reactions of these organolithiums with aromatic aldehydes provides N-protected beta-amino alcohols with diastereoselectivities up to >99:1 anti/syn; with aliphatic aldehydes, diastereoselectivities were typically 1:1. Diastereoselectivities varied depending on the amount of aldehyde used. The N-protected beta-amino alcohols could be deprotected to primary amines by treatment with NaH to generate oxazolidinones followed by basic hydrolysis. Alternative…

Enantiopure building blocks for chiral drugs from racemic mixtures of secondary alcohols by combination of lipase catalysis and Mitsunobu esterification.

The racemic alcohols 3-chloro-1-(2-thienyl)-1-propanol, 3-chloro-1-phenylpropanol, and 1-chloro-3-(3,4-difluorophenoxy)-2-propanol were converted into a mixture of one enantiomer as butanoate and the other as alcohol by lipase catalysis. Subsequent Mitsunobu esterification without separation proceeded with inversion of the unreacted alcohols to give high yield and ee of the three enantiopure butanoates. The butanoates of opposite configuration were produced in a similar manner, but starting with lipase-catalyzed hydrolysis of the racemic butanoates.

Simultaneous detection and quantitation of diethylene glycol, ethylene glycol, and the toxic alcohols in serum using capillary column gas chromatography.

Determination of toxic glycols and alcohols in an emergency setting requires a rapid yet accurate and reliable method. To simultaneously determine diethylene glycol (DEG) along with ethylene glycol, methanol, isopropanol, acetone, and ethanol, we modified a previously developed gas chromatographic (GC) method. The system used a Hewlett-Packard 6890 GC with EPC, a Gooseneck splitless liner, and an Rtx-200 capillary column (30 m x 0.53-mm i.d., 3 mm). After serum samples were deproteinized using ultrafiltration (Millipore Ultrafree-MC), 1 mL of the protein-free filtrate was manually injected int…

[The resolution of racemic sec-phenethyl alcohol on cellulose tribenzoate-based CSP: influence of different alcohols in the mobile phase].

Several primary and secondary alcohols (ethanol, 1-propanol, 2-propanol, 1-butanol) were used as the mobile phase components separately, to investigate their effects on the capacity factor and stereoselectivity of sec-phenethyl alcohol enantiomers on cellulose tribenzoate-based CSP. The chiral recognition mechanism for the enantiomeric aromatic alcohols studied may involve: (1) the aromatic portion of the solute may insert into a chiral cavity of the CSP through a hydrogen bonding interaction between the solute's alcoholic hydrogen and the ester carbonyl group on the CSP; (2) the mobile phase …

Production of Methyl Ketones from Secondary Alcohols by Cell Suspensions of C(2) to C(4)n-Alkane-Grown Bacteria.

Nineteen new C(2) to C(4)n-alkane-grown cultures were isolated from lake water from Warinanco Park, Linden, N.J., and from lake and soil samples from Bayway Refinery, Linden, N.J. Fifteen known liquid alkane-utilizing cultures were also found to be able to grow on C(2) to C(4)n-alkanes. Cell suspensions of these C(2) to C(4)n-alkane-grown bacteria oxidized 2-alcohols (2-propanol, 2-butanol, 2-pentanol, and 2-hexanol) to their corresponding methyl ketones. The product methyl ketones accumulated extracellularly. Cells grown on 1-propanol or 2-propanol oxidized both primary and secondary alcohols…

A Review: Cytochrome P450 in Alcoholic and Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease.

Alcoholic fatty liver disease (FALD) and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) have similar pathological spectra, both of which are associated with a series of symptoms, including steatosis, inflammation, and fibrosis. These clinical manifestations are caused by hepatic lipid synthesis and metabolism dysregulation and affect human health. Despite having been studied extensively, targeted therapies remain elusive. The Cytochrome P450 (CYP450) family is the most important drug-metabolising enzyme in the body, primarily in the liver. It is responsible for the metabolism of endogenous and exog

[Early detection of alcohol use: discuss alcohol use to prevent damage].

INTRODUCTION: Health professionals do not routinely ask patients about alcohol use, although it is associated with a range of somatic and psychological problems. Therefore, alcohol use may not be recognized as the cause of a health problem, which may result in worsening of the situation, incorrect diagnosis or incorrect treatment. This is illustrated by three cases from different clinical practices: the emergency department, the hospital ward and the general practice. BARRIERS: Several factors, such as time limitations and provider beliefs, can hinder asking about and discussing alcohol use.

Liver Transplantation in Alcohol-related Liver Disease and Alcohol-related Hepatitis.

Alcohol-related liver disease (ARLD) remains one of the leading causes of chronic liver disease and the prevalence of alcohol-related cirrhosis is still increasing worldwide. Thus, ARLD is one of the leading indications for liver transplantation (LT) worldwide especially after the arrival of direct-acting antivirals for chronic hepatitis C infection. Despite the risk of alcohol relapse, the outcomes of LT for ARLD are as good as for other indications such as hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), with 1-, 5-, and 10- year survival rates of 85%, 74%, and 59%, respectively. Despite these good results,

Significance of gut microbiota in alcoholic and non-alcoholic fatty liver diseases.

Liver-gut communication is vital in fatty liver diseases, and gut microbes are the key regulators in maintaining liver homeostasis. Chronic alcohol abuse and persistent overnutrition create dysbiosis in gut ecology, which can contribute to fatty liver disease. In this review, we discuss the gut microbial compositional changes that occur in alcoholic and nonalcoholic fatty liver diseases and how this gut microbial dysbiosis and its metabolic products are involved in fatty liver disease pathophysiology. We also summarize the new approaches related to gut microbes that might help in the diagnosis

Chronic Alcohol Exposure of Cells Using Controlled Alcohol-Releasing Capillaries.

Alcohol is one of the main causes of liver diseases such as fatty liver, alcoholic hepatitis, and chronic hepatitis with liver fibrosis or cirrhosis. To reproduce the conditions of alcohol-induced liver diseases and to identify the disease-causing mechanisms at the cellular level, several methods have been used to expose the cells to ethanol. As ethanol evaporates easily, it is difficult to mimic chronic alcohol exposure conditions at the cellular level. In this study, we developed a glass capillary system containing ethanol, which could steadily release ethanol from the polyethylene tubing an
