Altered Balance of Receptive Field Excitation and Suppression in Visual Cortex of Amblyopic Macaque Monkeys.

In amblyopia, a visual disorder caused by abnormal visual experience during development, the amblyopic eye (AE) loses visual sensitivity whereas the fellow eye (FE) is largely unaffected. Binocular vision in amblyopes is often disrupted by interocular suppression. We used 96-electrode arrays to record neurons and neuronal groups in areas V1 and V2 of six female macaque monkeys (Macaca nemestrina) made amblyopic by artificial strabismus or anisometropia in early life, as well as two visually normal female controls. To measure suppressive binocular interactions directly, we recorded neuronal res…

Calibration and validation of the 2WIN photoscreener compared to the PlusoptiX S12 and the SPOT.

PURPOSE: Pediatricians are interested in the amblyopia detection ability of photoscreeners, whereas ophthalmologists ponder their value as autorefractors. The 2WIN (Adaptica, Padova, Italy) is a new device capable of estimating refractive error and ocular alignment by infrared photoscreening. METHODS: Sequential pediatric eye patients with a high (56% to 60%) prescreening prevalence of amblyopia risk factors were screened with the PlusoptiX S12 (PlusoptiX, Inc., Atlanta, GA), SPOT (PediaVision, Lake Mary, FL), and 2WIN photoscreeners before confirmatory examination adhering to American Associ…

Ophthalmological management in craniosynostosis.

INTRODUCTION: In published series, a large proportion of patients with craniosynostosis show impaired vision. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A lite … ratopathy, which requires aggressive management to avoid severe irremediable corneal complications. Amblyopia can result from optic neuropathy, corneal opacities, strabismus, or refractive errors. If undiagnosed and untreated at a young age, it results in permanent visual impairment. CONCLUSION: Children with craniosynostosis require a multidisciplinary ca …

Vision in the "good" eye of children treated for unilateral congenital cataract.

PURPOSE: The authors examined linear acuity and contrast sensitivity in the "good" (fellow) eye of children treated for unilateral congenital cataract to determine (1) whether there were subtle deficits like those described for the good eye of patients with strabismic amblyopia and (2) whether any deficits were related to the degree to which the good eye had been patched. METHODS: The authors tested patients treated for unilateral congenital cataract who had a well-documented history of patching. The good eye was physically normal with minimal refractive error. The measures were linear acuity…

Acquired Pediatric Brown Syndrome Secondary to Sinusitis.

Acquired pediatric Brown syndrome is rarely associated with sinusitis. Children may present with diplopia, elevation deficiency in adduction, and a head tilt or chin-up position. Magnetic resonance imaging can confirm the diagnosis. Antibiotic treatment is often insufficient for resolution. Surgical correction can effectively prevent amblyopia and restore binocular vision. [J Pediatr Ophthalmol Strabismus. 2019;56:e17-e19.].

Corneal superinfection in acute viral conjunctivitis in young children.

Two children suffered from corneal superinfection following acute viral keratoconjunctivitis. Group A beta-hemolytic streptococci were isolated in one child and cultures were negative in the other child. The corneal ulcers resolved with prompt antibiotic therapy, but both patients developed amblyopia. Visual outcome following corneal superinfection in acute viral conjunctivitis may be poor when it occurs in young children.

Progressive visual loss in a child with Parry-Romberg syndrome.

Progressive hemifacial atrophy in Parry-Romberg syndrome is associated with a wide variety of ophthalmologic findings. Progressive visual loss, especially in the first decade, is rare in this condition. We present a young girl originally felt to have linear scleroderma and anisometropic amblyopia, who was eventually diagnosed with Parry-Romberg syndrome as the cause of her cutaneous and ophthalmologic findings.

The amblyopic deficit and its relationship to geniculo-cortical processing streams.

Amblyopia or lazy eye is the most common cause of uniocular blindness in adults and is caused by a disruption to normal visual development as a consequence of unmatched inputs from the two eyes in early life, arising from a turned eye (strabismus), unequal refractive error (anisometropia), or form deprivation (e.g., cataract). Using high-field functional magnetic resonance imaging in a group of human adults with amblyopia, we previously demonstrated that reduced responses are observable at a thalamic level, that of the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN). Here we investigate the selectivity of th…

Pediatric ophthalmology.

In the recent pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus literature, there have been some important papers. Topics have included ocular outcomes in children born before 32 weeks of gestation, a practical correlate of Teller visual acuities and visual behavior in a real environment in a severely handicapped child, and a debate on the indications and efficacy of population screening for amblyopia. New information on the creation of refractive errors by earlier eyelid closure than used previously and a new torsionometer represent new sensory information. New information about motor adaptations in str…

Visual outcome in 879 children treated for strabismus: insufficient accommodation and vision deprivation, deficient emmetropisation and anisometropia.

PURPOSE: To identify the effect of infant hypermetropia on residual amblyopia in children remaining after treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 879 strabismic children had cycloplegic retinoscopy at the age of 6 months and later when strabismus was diagnosed. A total of 26 hypermetropes consistently wore glasses from the age of 6 months, and 305 other hypermetropes had their accommodation periodically assessed by dynamic retinoscopy before strabismus was diagnosed. The relation between the last known visual acuity after treatment and all other clinical findings was analysed using t-tests and regr…

The need for intraocular lens implantation in children.

The intraocular lens offers an additional experimental parameter to be considered for the visual rehabilitation of children with traumatic or unilateral infantile cataracts. The disadvantages of aphakic spectacles or contact lens and amblyopia have committed many of these eyes to the status of visual cripples. In this series of 41 patients, with a maximum of 24 months follow-up, it has been concluded that the IOL may be successfully implanted.

A Case of Morning Glory Disc Associated With Unilateral Retinopathy of Prematurity.

Morning glory disc anomaly is associated with serous retinal detachments, high refractive errors, amblyopia, and strabismus. There have been limited reports of an association between morning glory disc and peripheral retinal non-perfusion. The authors report a case of unilateral morning glory disc anomaly associated with markedly asymmetric retinopathy of prematurity. [J Pediatr Ophthalmol Strabismus. 2022;59(5):e55-e57.].

Multiloculated Ciliary Body Cysts and Lenticular Coloboma: A Rare Phenotypic Variation Associated With Persistent Fetal Vasculature.

A case of a 4 year-old boy with persistent fetal vasculature, lenticular coloboma, and a benign, multiloculated ciliary body mass is reviewed. The presence of ciliary body cysts in association with persistent fetal vasculature is sparsely reported. Its presence in a child can cause a diagnostic dilemma and lead to amblyopia. Persistent Corneal Edema Associated With Subconjunctival 5-fluorouracil in an Infant With Primary Congenital Glaucoma.

A 3-month-old boy with primary congenital glaucoma developed a transient corneal endothelial opacity after needle bleb revision with adjunctive 5-fluorouracil. This case presents a rare toxicity that, although transient, is concerning due to the potential of amblyopia. The authors review prior cases of corneal opacity associated with 5-fluorouracil.
