We describe the pathology of a unique case of Fallopian tube amebiasis, associated with hydrosalpinx, in a 21-year-old woman. She complained of lower abdominal pain, had a foul-smelling green vaginal discharge and fever during one week. There was a discrete increase in body temperature and a painful abdominal palpation at the lower right side, with signs of local peritoneal irritation. Pathological examination showed a marked dilatation of the fallopian tube and hydrosalpinx. Microscopic examination showed a poorly formed granuloma composed of large macrophages with many Entamoeba histolytica …

Amebic colitis is associated with serious complications and a high fatality rate if it progresses to its fulminant form. The purpose of this retrospective study was to determine the risk factors associated with fulminant amebic colitis. From February 1978 to February 1993, 60 adults were diagnosed with intestinal amebiasis at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital. Sixteen patients with massive bloody diarrhea, persistent systemic toxicity or signs of peritonitis were classified as having fulminant colitis, five of whom progressed to fulminant colitis after admission to the hospital. Forty-four patients…

Parasitologists from different medical institutions in Havana City carried out the external validation of ENZYMEBA, a diagnostic procedure of intestinal amebiasis developed at the "Pedro Kourí" Institute of Tropical Medicine. To this end, serial faeces specimens from 212 individuals were collected and observed on the microscope (reference test). The ENZYMEBA immunoassay (validation test) was also made. On comparing ENZYMEBA with the microscopic examination, satisfactory indexes of sensitivity and specificity were found. No cross-reactions were detected in faeces specimens, where found other pa…

Stool specimens from 89 high-risk, sexually active homosexual men were screened for enteric protozoal cysts. Patients whose specimens contained nonpathogenic cysts were investigated further by examination of fresh purged specimens. A total of 27 of the initial specimens (30%) contained protozoal cysts. Twenty-three patients (26%) harbored pathogens. There were 18 cases (20%) of amebiasis and 11 cases (12%) of giardiasis. Six men (7%) had concurrent amebiasis and giardiasis. The presence of infections correlated with a history of anilingus but not with place of birth, travel, or history of symp…

Necrotizing amebic colitis is an uncommon amebiasis complication associated with high mortality. We present a case of necrotizing amebic colitis in an old patient whose diagnosis was revealed at postmortem examination. An 81-year-old man died at home without medical attention. The postmortem examination revealed ulcers involving the entire colon and intestinal perforation. The ulcers were large, geographic, and necrotizing, extending from the cecum to the rectum. The histological examination disclosed the infectious etiology by showing amebic trophozoites at the base of the ulcers. No extra-in…

Liver abscesses are a common complication in patients with amebiasis. Rarely, these will rupture across the diaphragm causing life-threatening empyemas. Evidence justifies performing surgical debridement or decortication for their treatment, given the better overall performance in comparison to open surgeries. However, no current guideline specifies which is the best approach. This report presents the case of a 39-year-old male with clinical, radiographical and microbiological evidence of an amebic empyema secondary to an amebic liver abscess, who received treatment by video-assisted thoracosc…

Amebiasis is a parasitic disease that extends worldwide and is a public health problem in developing countries. Metronidazole is the drug recommended in the treatment of amebiasis, but its contralateral effects and lack of continuity of treatment induce low efficiency, coupled with the appearance of resistant amoebic strains. Therefore, the search of new compounds with amoebicidal activity is urgent and important. In this study, we evaluated the in vitro and in vivo antiamoebic activity of the essential oil Dysphania ambrosioides (L.) Mosyakin & Clemants. It exhibited an IC50 = 0.7 mg/mL again…

The sensing of Pathogen Associated Molecular Patterns (PAMPs) by innate immune receptors, such as Toll-like receptors (TLRs), is the first step in the inflammatory response to pathogens. Entamoeba histolytica, the etiological agent of amebiasis, has a surface molecule with the characteristics of a PAMP. This molecule, which was termed lipopeptidophosphoglycan (LPPG), is recognized through TLR2 and TLR4 and leads to the release of cytokines from human monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells; LPPG-activated dendritic cells have increased expression of costimulatory molecules. LPPG activates …

Entamoeba histolytica is an invasive intestinal pathogenic parasitic protozoan that causes amebiasis. It must be distinguished from Entamoeba dispar and E. moshkovskii, nonpathogenic commensal parasites of the human gut lumen that are morphologically identical to E. histolytica. Detection of specific E. histolytica antigens in stools is a fast, sensitive technique that should be considered as the method of choice. Stool real-time PCR is a highly sensitive and specific technique but its high cost make it unsuitable for use in endemic areas where there are economic constraints. Serology is an im…

BACKGROUND: Emergency care is required for patients presenting dysentery and fever.
CASE REPORT: A 65-year old patient living in metropolitan France was hospitalized for watery diarrhea that had progressively worsened over the last month. Rectal bleeding was also noted. Serology tests at admission, together with parasitology examination of the fecal matter and colonoscopy led to the diagnosis of intestinal amebiasis a few hours before the patient's rapid death. Serology was positive for amebas and the diagnosis was confirmed by pathology examination of the colonoscopy biopsies.
DISCUSSION: T…

Amebiasis is an important cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, and caused by infection with the protozoan parasite Entamoeba histolytica. Metronidazole is currently the first-line drug despite adverse effects and concerns on the emergence of drug resistance. Fumagillin, a fungal metabolite from Aspergillus fumigatus, and its structurally related natural and synthetic compounds have been previously explored as potential anti-angiogenesis inhibitors for cancers, anti-microbial, and anti-obese compounds. Although fumagillin was used for human amebiasis in clinical trials in 1950s, the mode…

E. histolytica is the etiological agent of intestinal amebiasis and liver abscesses, which still poses public health threat globally. Metronidazole is the drug of choice against amebiasis. However, metronidazole-resistant amoebic clinical isolates and strains have been reported recently, challenging the efforts for amebiasis eradication. In search of alternative treatments, E. histolytica transcriptomes have shown the association of genes involved in RNA metabolism with the virulence of the parasite. Among the upregulated genes in amoebic liver abscesses are the splicing factors EhU2AF2 and a …

BACKGROUND: Enteral parasitic diseases are a public health problem in nations with low economic development and in settings with poor sanitation. Amebiasis is the second most frequent form of parasitosis, with a high burden of disease. Knowledge of the prevalence of enteroparasitoses in a given region is useful for planning clinical decision-making. Thus, the aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of enteral parasitic diseases, especially amebiasis, through analysis on stool samples from public and private laboratories in a metropolitan area in southeastern Brazil.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to diagnose amebiasis and also identify Entamoeba histolytica (E. histolytica) and Entamoeba dispar (E. dispar) in patients with gastrointestinal symptoms in an endemic region in Turkey.
METHODS: Stool samples obtained from 181 patients with gastrointestinal symptoms from the Harran University Hospital of Sanliurfa were examined for the diagnosis of amebiasis by the three methods which are as follows:- In house polymerase chain reaction (PCR) targeting the 135 base pair region located on the small-subunit ribosomal RNA (SSU rRNA) gene to differentiate E. histolytica from E…

Attenuated salmonellae represent attractive candidates for the delivery of foreign antigens by oral vaccination. In this report, we describe … HP-MBP were protected against amebic liver abscess, the most common extraintestinal complication of amebiasis. Our findings indicate that the induction of mucosal and immune responses to the amebic SREHP antigen is dependent on the level of SREHP-MBP expression in S. typhimurium and establish that oral vaccination with SREHP can produce protective immunity …

We describe case of a 75-yr-old Japanese homosexual man who was diagnosed as having amebic colitis. The present case is unique in that invasive amebiasis has occurred in a homosexual man, because Entamoeba histolytica in homosexual patients is considered to be a nonpathogenic and commensal organism in western countries, and that the patient has not complained of any gastrointestinal symptoms associated with minute colonic lesion of an isolated cecal ulcer. This report indicates that the absence of gastrointestinal symptoms does not rule out invasive amebiasis. Therefore, once the ameba is iden…

A high index of suspicion and careful application of diagnostic methods are essential for accurate diagnosis of parasitic bowel diseases. The varied clinical spectrum of giardiasis, amebiasis, and strongyloidiasis emphasizes the need to consider these pathogens when patients present with gastrointestinal complaints. Giardiasis should be suspected in patients, especially returned travelers, with unexplained increase in stool frequency, particularly with bloating, flatulence, or vague systemic symptoms. Amebiasis must be considered in the differential diagnosis of any patient who presents with p…

Amebiasis, that is, infection with Entameba histolytica, continues to be endemic in the United States, with liver abscess occurring as an infrequent but constant complication. Seven cases are reported, with epidemiologic investigation of two. Reliable findings in hepatic abscess include fever, abdominal pain, respiratory distress, tender abdomen, and large, tender liver. Anemia, elevated white count with left shift, and the radiographic findings of an elevated right hemidiaphragm are constant. Epidemiologically, amebiasis occurs in clusters in the United States with person-to-person transmissi…
