Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) account for 70% of global mortality and are responsible for over 38 million deaths annually, with cardiovascular disease (CVD) constituting most of these fatalities. While traditional risk factors for CVD have long been recognized, there is growing evidence that a rising prevalence of ubiquitous environmental risk factors (ERFs) may play an increasingly significant role in the genesis and rising prevalence of NCDs. ERFs include many interconnected anthropogenic exposures with cumulative compound health impacts, including air pollution, noise exposure, artificia

The synergistic effects of accelerated climate change and anthropogenic land-use shifts increasingly compromise the functional integrity of terrestrial ecosystems. To preserve soil health and ensure global food security, a transition toward biointensive, climate-smart agriculture is imperative. This review provides a comprehensive synthesis of the multifaceted role of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) as "rhizosphere architects," bridging global biogeochemical cycles with intricate molecular and digital interventions. Microbe mediated mitigation of atmospheric stressors is evaluated

Under anthropogenic climate change, intensifying extreme climatic events are increasingly reshaping lake cyanobacterial blooms. However, their contributions remain poorly quantified and the causal pathways are unclear, limiting their integration into attribution and early warning systems and posing risks to drinking water safety. Here, we fuse 22 years of multisource daily records, build a distributed lag nonlinear model (DLNM) with counterfactual decomposition to separate the marginal effects of extremes from the concurrent normal climate load, and develop a transferable machine learning nowc

Artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) is the largest anthropogenic source of atmospheric mercury (Hg) globally, yet residential airborne Hg data and associated health impacts remain scarce in urban ASGM settings. The Atrato River basin combines intense ASGM activity with fish-dependent communities, making it a priority region for exposure assessment. We assessed (i) seasonal airborne elemental Hg (THg-Air) in urban Quibdo (QO) and rural Negua (NA); (ii) urinary total Hg (THg-U), hair total Hg (THg-Hair), and hair methylmercury (MeHg-Hair); and (iii) the relative contributions of inhalat

Hydrothermal carbonization demonstrates a potential for converting invasive plants into multifunctional carbonaceous material. Invasive plant-based hydrochar derived dissolved organic matter (HDOM) becomes an important source of anthropogenic dissolved organic matter, however, the molecular composition and bioavailability of HDOM and the controlling factors were not sufficiently revealed. Thus, in this study, a variety of invasive plants were selected to fabricate hydrochar at different hydrothermal temperatures to investigate the molecular composition via FT-ICR-MS and bioavailability based o

BACKGROUND: Synanthropic rodents are globally perceived as pests because of their adaptability to anthropogenic environments, and result in significant challenges to food and health security. Rodent control with anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) has been widely implemented to minimize economic losses, despite concerns about the impacts of ARs. This study aims to evaluate AR use and knowledge among pest management professionals (PMPs). Using an online survey, we aimed to: (i) assess PMPs' training; (ii) identify commonly used control methods; (iii) evaluate dependency on ARs; and (iv) evaluate P

Peat-forming wetlands (PFW) are crucial in the global C-cycle, yet they are increasingly threatened by various anthropogenic pressures, including microplastic (MP) pollution. We investigate the impacts of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and its additive, calcium carbonate (CaCO3) on organic matter (OM) degradation in PFW. We conducted two experiments: first, by mixing peat soil with increasing concentrations of crushed sanitary PVC-MP (0.3 %, 3 %, and 30 %) and second, by assessing the role of CaCO₃ in modulating these impacts. Our findings revealed significant alterations in peat chemical properties

BACKGROUND: Freshwater pollution with compounds used during anthropogenic activities could be a major driver of antibiotic resistance emergence and dissemination in environmental settings. Fluoroquinolones and heavy metals are two widely used aquatic pollutants that show a high stability in the environment and have well-known effects on antibiotic resistance selection. However, the impact of these compounds on antibiotic resistance maintenance in aquatic ecosystems remains unknown. In this study, we used a microcosm approach to determine the persistence of two fluoroquinolones (ciprofloxacin,

Freshwater killifish, Aphanius stoliczkanus, were collected from industrial and non-industrial areas in Oman to assess trace element levels in muscle and liver tissues and estimate potential human health risks using the Estimated Daily Intake (EDI) and Target Hazard Quotient (THQ). Samples were obtained from Al Amarart, Al Khawd, and Surur and analyzed using Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy. Fish from Al Amarart exhibited significantly higher concentrations of toxic elements, particularly arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), and lead (Pb), suggesting a strong influence of industrial activities. China's lakes are plagued by cadmium (Cd) pollution. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) significantly regulates Cd(II) transport properties at the sediment-water interface. Understanding the effects of different DOM components on the transportation properties of Cd(II) at the sediment-water interface is essential. In this study, typical DOM from different sources was selected to study Cd(II) mobility at the sediment-water interface. Results showed that terrestrial-derived DOM (fulvic acids, FA) and autochthonous-derived DOM (α-amylase, B1) inhibit Cd(II) sequestration by sediments (42.5% and 5.8%,

As a typically anthropogenic contaminant, the toxicity effects of triclosan (TCS) were investigated in-depth from the viewpoint of m6A-pre-miRNAs modification. Based on miRNAs high-throughput sequencing, we unravelled the underlying molecular mechanisms regarding TCS-induced lipid-metabolism functional disorders. TCS exposure caused severe lipid accumulation in 120 hpf zebrafish liver and reduced their locomotor activity. Both bioinformatics analysis and experimental validation verified that TCS targeted miR-27b up-regulation to further trigger lipid-metabolism disorders and developmental malf

Coastal fish communities are under increasing levels of stress associated with climate variation and anthropogenic activities. However, the high degree of behavioral plasticity of many species within these communities allow them to cope with altered environmental conditions to some extent. Here, we combine meteorological information, data from hydroacoustic surveys, and recordings of goliath grouper sound production to examine the response of coastal fish communities to heavy rainfall events in South Florida, USA, that resulted in the release of excess storm water into surrounding estuaries an

It is well-documented that carbonyl compounds have adverse effects on human health. On the other hand, these oxygenated volatile organic compounds (OVOCs) are precursors of secondary pollutants such as tropospheric ozone or peroxy acetyl nitrate (PAN). In particular, formaldehyde, the simplest carbonyl, is the most abundant carbonyl in the air generated from the degradation of most volatile organic compounds (VOCs). This work presents for the first time the characterization and determination of levels of carbonyl compounds by passive monitoring performed from April-December 2021 in the city of

BACKGROUND: Transmission intensity for mosquito-borne diseases are highly heterogenous and multi-factorial. Understanding risk factors associated to disease transmission allow the optimization of vector control. This study sets out to understand and compare the combined anthropogenic and environmental risk factors of four major mosquito-borne diseases, dengue, malaria, chikungunya and Japanese encephalitis in Thailand.
METHODS: An integrated analysis of mosquito-borne diseases, meteorological and ambient air pollutants of 76 provinces of Thailand was conducted over 2003-2021. We explored the

Anthropogenic activities have resulted in a significant increase of reactive nitrogen (N) compounds in the atmosphere and a rise in N deposition on forest ecosystems. Increasing N loads impact forest productivity and health, altering tree physiological status and nutrient balance with possible beneficial and detrimental consequences. The impact of N deposition has received considerable attention by scientific research, covering medium and high latitudes, while experimental studies in the Mediterranean area are almost absent. The present study used a manipulative approach, through replicated N

Despite still being a matter of debate, there is growing evidence that pollutant-induced epigenetic changes can be propagated across generations. Whereas such modifications could have long-lasting effects on organisms and even on population, environmentally relevant data from long-term exposure combined with follow-up through multiple generations remain scarce for non-mammalian species. We performed a transgenerational experiment comprising four successive generations of zebrafish. Only fish from the first generation were exposed to an environmentally realistic concentration of cadmium (Cd). U

Air pollutants (either of natural or anthropogenic origin) represent a considerable environmental risk to human health by affecting the respiratory system and causing respiratory disorders. In this study, we investigate the effects of chronic exposure to hydrothermal emissions on the nasal cavity of mice since it is the first and the most exposed region of the respiratory system. This study, carried in S. Miguel Island, Azores-Portugal, used Mus musculus as a bioindicator species. Mice were captured in an area with non-eruptive active volcanism (Furnas Village) and another area without volcani
