We have reviewed the clinical records and histology of 135 patients who underwent temporal artery biopsy between 1973 and 1978. Biopsies were classified histologically as giant-cell arteritis (17%), atypical arteritis (6%), healed arteritis (2%), arteriosclerosis (67%), atherosclerosis (5%), or normal (3%). Most of the histological diagnoses made at the time of biopsy were confirmed but eight cases which had originally been reported as atypical or healed arteritis were classified as arteriosclerosis when reviewed. All 33 patients with histological evidence of arteritis were accepted as clinica…

32 patients are described, who 1971-1974 were hospitalized because of temporal arteritis. The admissions diagnoses were: 5 temporal arteritis. 7 Neuroretinitis. 4 Blood vessel obstruction. 2 Cerebral tumor. 14 Vision disturbances up to sudden blindness of unknown cause. In the early stages when intermittent visual disturbances with vague headaches of older patients (average age 68 years) are present, a temporal arteritis is often not recognised. In the region of the papilla the retinal arteries show obvious luminal narrowing. The papilla is already early on somewhat blurred and oedematous. The…

Ninety patients with giant cell arteritis (GCA) were followed for 9-16 years after diagnosis. Corticosteroids were given to all but one patient. Forty-two patients died during the observation period (27 women and 15 men). The survival was compared with that in the general population and found not to be reduced among the GCA patients. In fact, we found a lower mortality than expected after five years from diagnosis (p less than 0.05). We did not see any increase in deaths due to vascular or malignant diseases in our patients.

Paratuberculosis is a chronic infectious disease of ruminants caused by Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP). MAP is transmitted primarily through ingestion of contaminated feces, milk, or water and establishes persistent infection within intestinal macrophages by evading host immune defenses. Typical lesions include granulomatous enteritis, lymphangitis, and lymphadenitis. Lymphangitis mimicking arteritis has not been reported in bovine paratuberculosis, to our knowledge. Here, we describe a case of paratuberculosis in a 2-y-old Angus cow that was found dead. Gross changes consis…

Giant cell arteritis is a systemic vasculitis that causes inflammation in medium- and large-sized blood vessels. The condition can lead to irreversible blindness if not recognised and treated promptly with high-dose steroids. Clinical manifestations typically include headache, jaw pain, fever, and fatigue. However, unusual manifestations of the disease have been reported, including pulmonary nodules, uveitis, pericarditis, and stroke. We report a case of biopsy-confirmed giant cell arteritis in a patient found to have renal cell carcinoma, exhibiting these unusual manifestations simultaneously…

An 11-year-old boy presented with erythematous plaques over the bilateral mandibular and mental regions for 2 years, accompanied by cough and dyspnea for more than 2 months. Chest computed tomography angiography revealed marked stenosis of the right pulmonary artery, irregular aortic caliber, and aortic wall thickening. Histopathological examination of the skin lesion, including immunohistochemistry and special stains, confirmed a chronic suppurative inflammation. Whole-exome sequencing was negative. A final diagnosis of granuloma faciale and Takayasu arteritis was established. Combination the…
