Minority stress and mental health among Dutch LGBs: examination of differences between sex and sexual orientation.

Minority stress is often cited as an explanation for greater mental health problems among lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) individuals than heterosexual individuals. However, studies focusing on sex or sexual orientation differences in level of minority stress and its impact on mental health are scarce, even more so outside the United States. Performing secondary analyses on the data of a Dutch population study on sexual health, the present study examines the robustness of the minority stress model by explaining mental health problems among men and women with mostly or only same-sex sexual att

Hi-fun, homepas and incidental sex with drugs: a qualitative study developing a locally grounded definition of hi-fun (chemsex) compared to other sexualised drug use types practiced by gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men in Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men's (GBMSM) sexualised drug use, defined as taking psychoactive drugs before or during sex, is the focus of public health concern globally. 'Hi-fun' in Thailand (similar to the practice of 'chemsex' in Western settings) is a subset of sexualised drug use. Much harm reduction programming relies on Western chemsex definitions, obscuring critical variation related to local cultures, drug markets and legislative contexts. We aimed to develop, informed by transnational queer sociology, a locally grounded definition of hi-fun compared to ot

A Pilot, Randomized Controlled Trial of Dual Daily HIV and Sexually Transmitted Infection Pre-exposure Prophylaxis Using Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate/Emtricitabine and Doxycycline in Gay, Bisexual, and Other Men Who Have Sex With Men and Transgender Women: The DuDHS Study.

BACKGROUND: Men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women experience high sexually transmitted infection (STI) rates. This study evaluated the feasibility of doxycycline pre-exposure prophylaxis (doxyPrEP) for STI prevention in these key populations. METHODS: Sexually-active MSM and transgender women without human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) with prior syphilis were recruited. Participants initiated HIV PrEP with tenofovir disoproxil fumarate/emtricitabine (TDF/FTC) daily for 48 weeks and were randomized 1:1 to daily doxyPrEP for 48 weeks (immediate arm), or doxyPrEP initiated at 24

Self-reported changes in sexual behaviors and HIV prevention services utilization among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men after entering the post-pandemic era: tales of two Chinese cities with different pathways of "resume normal".

BACKGROUND: Relaxing Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) control measures and "resume normal" might have direct impacts on sexual behaviors and utilization of HIV prevention and sexual health services among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM). To address the knowledge gaps, this study aimed to compare self-reported changes in sexual risk behaviors and HIV service utilization among GBMSM in the post-pandemic era between Beijing and Hong Kong. In addition, the determinants of self-reported increase in condomless anal sex (CAS) were investigated among GBMSM in Beijing or Hon

Weekly Text Messages to Support Adherence to Oral Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) Among Gay, Bisexual, and Other Cisgender Men Who Have Sex With Men (MSM) and Transgender Women: Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial Nested in PrEP Brasil Study.

BACKGROUND: Mobile phones have become popular tools to support public health interventions (mobile health [mHealth]). Text messaging, including SMS, is a simple, low-cost approach for health communication to a large population and offers valuable tools in improving health outcomes. Despite the global advances in HIV treatment and prevention, the HIV epidemic continues to disproportionately affect certain populations such as men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women, including in Latin America. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of SMS text messaging in impro

Effect of a web drama video series on HIV and other sexually transmitted infection testing among gay, bisexual and queer men: study protocol for a community-based, pragmatic randomised controlled trial in Singapore: the People Like Us (PLU) Evaluation Study.

INTRODUCTION: Gay, bisexual and queer (GBQ) men are at disproportionately higher risk of acquiring HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STI). While HIV/STI testing rates among GBQ men are increasing worldwide, they remain suboptimal in a variety of settings. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The study is a pragmatic randomised controlled trial designed to evaluate an online video series developed by a community-based organisation in Singapore for GBQ men. A total of 300 HIV-negative GBQ men in Singapore aged 18-29 years old will be recruited for this study. Participants will subsequently be ran

Gender, sexual orientation identity, and initiation of amphetamine injecting among people who inject drugs: Examination of an expanding drug era in Montreal, Canada, 2011-19.

BACKGROUND: Amphetamine injection is expanding in North America and has been associated with male homosexuality among people who inject drugs (PWID). Applying subcultural evolution theory, we examined overall and gender-stratified trends in amphetamine injection and assessed sexual orientation as a gender-specific predictor of initiation among PWID in Montreal, Canada. METHODS: Data were from HEPCO, an open prospective cohort of PWID. Gender and sexual orientation were self-identified at enrolment. Interviewer-administered questionnaires at three-monthly (HCV RNA-negative participants) or yea

Best practices in LGBT care: A guide for primary care physicians.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people have unique healthcare needs. While all LGBT people are at an increased risk for mental health and substance abuse disorders, certain health conditions vary by group. Overweight and obesity are more common in lesbian and bisexual women, whereas sexual minority men are at increased risk for infections such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and syphilis. Breast, cervical, and prostate cancer screening should be offered to all LGBT individuals according to national guidelines and with consideration of a transgender person's natal and surgi

The Association Between Sexual Identity and Cannabis Vaping Among U.S. Adults: Exploring Differences by Serious Psychological Distress.

INTRODUCTION: Cannabis vaping has gained popularity, particularly among sexual minority individuals. Sexual minority individuals experience high levels of serious psychological distress, which might worsen cannabis vaping disparities. This study examined cannabis vaping prevalence by sexual identity and serious psychological distress. METHODS: Data were drawn from the U.S. 2022-2023 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (N=92,233). A weighted multivariable binomial logistic regression model assessed past-month cannabis vaping (no, yes) by sexual identity (heterosexual/straight, gay/lesbian,

LGB-Affirming School Climates and Sexual Health Outcomes Among U.S. High School Students 2015-2017: Differences by Sex and Sexual Identity.

PURPOSE: Lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) adolescents face disparities in sexual health outcomes compared to their heterosexual peers, which has implications for health outcomes and developmental trajectories. We examined whether adolescents living in jurisdictions with school climates that were more exclusionary toward LGB individuals engaged in higher risk sexual behaviors than those in jurisdictions with more inclusive school climates. METHODS: Data on sexual identity, age at first sex, condom use at last sex and the number of lifetime partners came from the 2015 (20 jurisdictions) and 201

Sex and orientation identity matter in the substance use behaviors of sexual minority adolescents in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Health sciences researchers are beginning to understand the differing experiences and health risks among sexual minority subgroups (i.e., those who describe themselves as homosexual/gay/lesbian, bisexual, or unsure/questioning). Such research can promote the allocation of resources to high-risk groups and the development of interventions tailored to their needs. The present study extends this line of research to substance use among adolescents. METHODS: The lifetime and/or past 30-day alcohol, tobacco, cigarette, e-cigarette, marijuana, prescription drug, and illicit drug use of s
