Effects of naltrexone on food intake and body weight gain in olanzapine-treated rats.

Blockade of opioidergic neurotransmission contributes to reduction in body weight. However, how such blockade affects body weight gain (BWG) attributed to second generation antipsychotic agents (SGAs) has not yet been established. Here we examined the effects of an opioid receptor antagonist, naltrexone (NTX), on food intake and BWG associated with an SGA, olanzapine (OL). Four groups of Wistar Han IGS rats were treated for 28 days with either OL (2 mg/kg twice daily, intraperitoneal (IP)), a combination of OL (2 mg/kg twice daily, IP) + extended-release NTX (50 mg/kg, one-time, intramuscular

Pathology of benzalkonium chloride toxicity and its effect on body weight gain in broiler birds.

Four groups comprising 16 broiler birds each were given benzalkonium chloride (BC) at 100, 300, 500 and 700 ppm in drinking water for 40 days and one group of 16 birds (control) was kept on plain water. Clinical signs in higher dose groups were respiratory distress, drooling of saliva, difficulty in deglutition, inappetence, apathy, lethargy and loss of body weight. Better body weight gain was recorded in 100 ppm dose rate. At 300 ppm, no significant body weight variation was recorded, whereas, at 500 and 700 ppm dose rates, significantly poor body weight gain was recorded. Major pathological

Liver-specific Prkn knockout mice are more susceptible to diet-induced hepatic steatosis and insulin resistance.

OBJECTIVE: PARKIN is an E3 ubiquitin ligase that regulates mitochondrial quality control through a process called mitophagy. Recent human and rodent studies suggest that loss of hepatic mitophagy may occur during the pathogenesis of obesity-associated fatty liver and contribute to changes in mitochondrial metabolism associated with this disease. Whole-body Prkn knockout mice are paradoxically protected against diet-induced hepatic steatosis; however, liver-specific effects of Prkn deficiency cannot be discerned in this model due to pleotropic effects of germline Prkn deletion on energy balance

Relationship of APOA5, PPARγ and HL gene variants with serial changes in childhood body mass index and coronary artery disease risk factors in young adulthood.

BACKGROUND: Triglycerides is an independent risk factor for coronary artery disease (CAD) and is especially important in Indians because of high prevalence of hypertriglyceridemia in this population. Both genetic and environmental factors determine triglyceride levels. In a birth cohort from India, hypertriglyceridemia was found in 41% of men and 11% of women. Subjects who had high triglycerides had more rapid body mass index (BMI) or weight gain than rest of the cohort throughout infancy, childhood and adolescence. We analysed polymorphisms in APOA5, hepatic lipase and PPARγ genes and investi

HIV infection and increased food insecurity are associated with adverse body composition changes among pregnant and lactating Kenyan women.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Body composition changes markedly during reproduction. In sub-Saharan Africa, impacts of HIV infection on body composition across pregnancy and lactation in the context of Option B+ antiretroviral therapy are unknown. Therefore, we sought to evaluate the role of HIV infection on body composition during pregnancy and lactation among Kenyan women. SUBJECTS/METHODS: A cohort of pregnant women (n = 333; 50.5% HIV+, receiving ART) were enrolled at seven clinics in western Kenya. Two prenatal (mean ± SD: 23.6 ± 4.4 and 33.4 ± 2.0 weeks gestation) and three postpartum (6, 14,

FGF21 decreases body weight without reducing food intake or bone mineral density in high-fat fed obese rhesus macaque monkeys.

OBJECTIVE: Administration of FGF21 and FGF21 analogues reduce body weight; improve insulin sensitivity and dyslipidemia in animal models of obesity and in short term clinical trials. However potential adverse effects identified in mice have raised concerns for the development of FGF21 therapeutics. Therefore, this study was designed to address the actions of FGF21 on body weight, glucose and lipid metabolism and importantly its effects on bone mineral density (BMD), bone markers, and plasma cortisol in high-fat fed obese rhesus macaque monkeys. METHODS: Obese non-diabetic rhesus macaque monke

Associations among weight suppression, self-acceptance, negative body image, and eating disorder behaviors among women with eating disorder symptoms.

The present study aimed to clarify existing research that has inconsistently shown that weight suppression (differences between individuals' highest and current body weights) is associated with worse eating disorder (ED) behaviors and negative body image among women with lifetime EDs, by examining whether an understudied client-supported protective factor for ED pathology - self-acceptance - moderates these associations. Currently symptomatic women with lifetime EDs (N = 108) completed measures assessing self-acceptance and ED symptoms via an online survey. Moderated regressions examined wheth

Smoking Cessation and Changes in Body Mass Index: Findings From the First Randomized Cessation Trial in a Low-Income Country Setting.

BACKGROUND: In high-income countries, quitting cigarette smoking is associated with weight gain, which can reduce motivation to abstain. Whether smoking cessation is associated with weight gain in a low-income country context has never been investigated. We aimed to determine the post-cessation changes in body mass index (BMI) and its predictors among smokers who received a smoking cessation intervention in a low-income country setting. METHODS: We performed post hoc analyses of data from 269 smokers who participated in a two-group, parallel-arm, double-blind, placebo-controlled randomized tr

Chronic exposure to field-realistic doses of imidacloprid resulted in biphasic negative effects on honey bee physiology.

There have been many investigations on the negative effects of imidacloprid (IMD) on honey bees. IMD is known to disrupt honey bee physiology and colony health at a relatively low concentration compared to other pesticides. In this study, honey bee colonies were chronically exposed to field-realistic concentrations (5, 20, and 100 ppb) of IMD, and the body weight, flight performance, carbohydrate reserve, and lipid contents of forager bees analyzed. Transcriptome analyses followed by quantitative PCR were also conducted for both nurse and forager bees to elucidate any changes in energy metabol

Efficacy and safety of time-restricted eating in metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Time-restricted eating (TRE) may improve weight loss, insulin resistance, and body composition, which are key factors in the pathophysiology of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). However, evidence on the efficacy of TRE in patients with MASLD is limited. This study aimed to evaluate the potential benefits of TRE in patients with overweight or obesity and MASLD. METHODS: In this 16-week randomized controlled trial, patients with overweight or obesity and MASLD were randomized into three groups in a 1:1:1 ratio: standard of care (SOC), calorie r
