The diagnosis and management of pulmonary hydatid disease represents an important clinical problem in areas of the world endemic to echinococcal infection. We describe a case of pulmonary bleeding and subsequent acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) in a 20-month-old female suffering from a typical postdiarrheal hemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS). Acute renal failure was treated early by peritoneal dialysis. The nematode Cyathostoma variegatum (a lungworm) was present in the distal trachea and proximal bronchi of an 8-mo-old emu that was euthanatized after fracturing the left tibiotarsus.
