Isolation of Aeromonas salmonicida subspecies salmonicida from aquaculture environment in India: Polyphasic identification, virulence characterization, and antibiotic susceptibility.

This study reports the polyphasic identification, characterization of virulence potential, and antibiotic susceptibility of Aeromonas salmonicida subspecies salmonicida COFCAU_AS, isolated from an aquaculture system in India. The physiological, biochemical, 16s rRNA gene sequencing and PAAS PCR test identified the strain as Aeromonas salmonicida. The MIY PCR tests established the subspecies as 'salmonicida'. The in vitro tests showed the isolated bacterium as haemolytic with casein, lipid, starch, and gelatin hydrolysis activity, indicating its pathogenic attributes. It also showed the ability

Total mercury and methylmercury concentrations in native and invasive fish species in Shadegan International Wetland, Iran, and health risk assessment.

Human exposure to mercury (Hg) mainly occurs through consumption of aquatics, especially fish. In aquatic systems, the bioaccumulation of Hg across trophic levels could be altered by invasive species through changing community composition. The present study is aimed at measuring total mercury (T-Hg) and methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations in non-native (redbelly tilapia (Tilapia zillii)) and native (Benni (Mesopotamichthys sharpeyi) and common carp (Cyprinus carpio)) fish species throughout Shadegan International Wetland and comparing health risk of their mercury contents to the local populati

In vitro cellular uptake and neuroprotective efficacy of poly-arginine-18 (R18) and poly-ornithine-18 (O18) peptides: critical role of arginine guanidinium head groups for neuroprotection.

We have previously demonstrated that Cationic Arginine-Rich Peptides (CARPs) and in particular poly-arginine-18 (R18; 18-mer of arginine) exhibit potent neuroprotective properties in both in vitro and in vivo neuronal injury models. Based on the current literature, there is a consensus that arginine residues by virtue of their positive charge and guanidinium head group is the critical element for imparting CARP neuroprotective properties and their ability to traverse cell membranes. This study examined the importance of guanidinium head groups in R18 for peptide cellular uptake, localization, …

Current use and development of fish vaccines in China.

In the past decades, the aquaculture industry made great progress in China, which contributes more than 70% yield of the world's farmed fish. Along with the rapid growth of fish production, increased emergence and outbreak of numbers of diseases pose harm to the aquaculture industry and food safety. From the efficient, safe, environmental and ethical aspects, vaccines is definitely the most appropriate and focused method to control different kinds of fish diseases. In China, researchers have done huge works on the fish vaccines, and so far six domestic aquatic vaccine products along with one i

Metal pollution in biotic and abiotic samples of the Büyük Menderes River, Turkey.

The Büyük Menderes River (BMR) is one of the largest rivers in Turkey. This river irrigates efficient farmlands and includes tributaries of other rivers and streams and many populated towns within its limits in the Ege region. Both the estuary and Işıklı Lake serve as a sanctuary for various waterbirds. Therefore, the BMR plays a critical role both for the inhabitants and for the ecosystem organisms in its environs. In the present study, we analyzed levels of metals including iron, barium, zinc, vanadium, cobalt, chromium, cadmium, copper, nickel, aluminum, arsenic, manganese, antimony, silver

Autoantibodies in inflammatory arthritis.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a systemic chronic inflammatory disease characterized by extensive synovitis resulting in erosions of articular cartilage and marginal bone with joint destruction. The lack of immunological tolerance in RA represents the first step toward the development of autoimmunity. Susceptible individuals, under the influence of environmental factors, such as tobacco smoke, and silica exposure, develop autoimmune phenomena that result in the presence of autoantibodies. HLA and non-HLA haplotypes play a major role in determining the development of specific autoantibodies diffe

In vitro characteristics of cyprinid herpesvirus 2: effect of kidney extract supplementation on growth.

Herpesviral hematopoietic necrosis caused by goldfish hematopoietic necrosis virus (now identified as cyprinid herpesvirus 2, CyHV-2) has contributed to economic losses in goldfish Carassius auratus culture and is becoming a major obstacle in Prussian carp C. gibelio aquaculture in China. Several reports have described difficulties in culturing the virus, with the total loss of infectivity within several passages in cell culture. We succeeded in propagating CyHV-2 with a high infectious titer in a RyuF-2 cell line newly derived from the fin of the Ryukin goldfish variety using culture medium s

Improvement of gamete quality and its short-term storage: an approach for biotechnology in laboratory fish.

In fish, in vitro fertilization is an important reproductive tool used as first step for application of others biotechniques as chromosome and embryo manipulation. In this study, we aimed to optimize gamete quality and their short-term storage from the yellowtail tetra Astyanax altiparanae, for future application in laboratory studies. Working with sperm, we evaluated the effects of spawning inducers (carp pituitary gland and Ovopel® [(D-Ala6, Pro9-NEt) - mGnRH+metoclopramide]) and the presence of female on sperm motility. Additionally, we developed new procedures for short-term storage of spe

Epidemiology of fishborne trematodiasis in Kazakhstan.

Fish borne trematodes are an important cause of morbidity in Kazakhstan. The number of human cases of opisthorchiidosis (infection with parasites of the family opisthorchiidae) reached a peak of 2521 recorded cases (17 cases per 100,000) in 2002 with a gradual decline to 1225 cases (7.4 cases per 100,000) in 2011. Most human cases are found in the north and north east part of Kazakhstan in areas drained by the Irtysh River and it tributaries. A further focus is found in the north west in the Ural river basin in the European part of Kazakhstan. The most common occupations of patients with opist

Detection of mcr-1 Gene among Escherichia coli Isolates from Farmed Fish and Characterization of mcr-1-Bearing IncP Plasmids.

The presence of the mcr-1 gene in Escherichia coli isolated from retail freshwater fish was investigated. Seven (3.65%) clonally unrelated original E. coli isolates from grass carp were positive for mcr-1 The mcr-1 genes were encoded by either chromosomes (n = 2) or conjugative plasmids (2 IncI2, 2 IncP, and 1 IncX4). The IncP plasmids were similar to other mcr-1-harboring IncP plasmids from China, though the insertion sites varied. Our report warrants further surveillance of resistance genes in aquaculture.

Antibiotic-induced dysbiosis alters stress responsiveness and neutrophil dynamics in fish.

Immune and stress responses are closely interconnected, with glucocorticoids modulating neutrophil number and activity, and cytokines influencing stress response. Neutrophils, due to their role as primary responders to infection, high sensitivity to glucocorticoid fluctuations, and critical involvement in gut microbiota homeostasis, were selected as the central focus of this study. We examined how antibiotic-induced dysbiosis affects the hypothalamus-pituitary-interrenal (HPI) axis and stress-related neutrophil dynamics in common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.). We analyzed the expression of stress-

Evolutionarily conserved mechanisms regulating stress-induced neutrophil redistribution in fish.

INTRODUCTION: Stress may pose a serious challenge to immune homeostasis. Stress however also may prepare the immune system for challenges such as wounding or infection, which are likely to happen during a fight or flight stress response. METHODS: In common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) we studied the stress-induced redistribution of neutrophils into circulation, and the expression of genes encoding CXC chemokines known to be involved in the regulation of neutrophil retention (CXCL12) and redistribution (CXCL8), and their receptors (CXCR4 and CXCR1-2, respectively) in blood leukocytes and in the f

Case studies of spinal deformities in ornamental koi, Cyprinus carpio L.

This is a study of vertebral deformities in ornamental koi based on computed radiography and skeletons cleaned by dermestid beetles (Dermestes maculatus). All koi developed gradual onset of swimming abnormalities as adults. Extensive intervertebral osteophyte formation correlated with age of fish and was associated with hindquarter paresis in one koi. Vertebral compression and fusion were the most common spinal deformities occurring at multiple sites, similar to findings in other farmed fish. Site-specific spinal deformities were thought to develop due to differences in swimming behaviour and
