Biochemical Variability of Nasal Cartilages: Implications in Functional Rhinoplasty.

INTRODUCTION: Nasal valve compromise is a common issue for patients presenting to an otolaryngologist. Anatomically, the dorsal septal cartilage (DSA) articulates with the upper lateral nasal cartilage (ULC). When the ULC weakens, it is prone to collapse and may result in nasal obstruction. Our objectives were to analyze histological differences between quadrangular and DSA nasal cartilages and compare histological composition of these tissues among patients with diagnosis of nasal valve compromise (NVC) versus those without NVC (no NVC). METHODS: Prospective cross-sectional study of nasal ca…

Reliability and Accuracy of the Outerbridge Classification in Staging of Cartilage Defects.

OBJECTIVE: The decision on whether or not and how to treat a local cartilage defect is still made intraoperatively based on the visual presentation of the cartilage and findings from indentations with an arthroscopic probe. The treatment decision is then usually based on grading according to established classifications systems, which, therefore, need to have high reliability and accuracy. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the reliability and accuracy of the Outerbridge classification in staging cartilage defects. METHODS: We performed an observer arthroscopic study using the Outerb…

Alteration in cartilage matrix stiffness as an indicator and modulator of osteoarthritis.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is characterized by cartilage degeneration and destruction, leading to joint ankylosis and disability. The major challenge in diagnosing OA at early stage is not only lack of clinical symptoms but also the insufficient histological and immunohistochemical signs. Alteration in cartilage stiffness during OA progression, especially at OA initiation, has been confirmed by growing evidences. Moreover, the stiffness of cartilage extracellular matrix (ECM), pericellular matrix (PCM) and chondrocytes during OA development are dynamically changed in unique and distinct fashions, rev…

Effects of auricular hematoma on propagation components of cartilage conduction.

Cartilage conduction (CC) is a method of perceiving sound via biological tissues by presenting a transducer to the auricular cartilage. Unlike conventional bone conduction through the bony section of the skull, conduction through lightweight auricular cartilage requires a weak force, thus resulting in less pain. CC has potential for hearing in clinical conditions such as ear canal atresia and auricular hematoma. Auricular hematoma, also known as cauliflower ear, is a swelling and deformation of the pinna due to internal bleeding. The bump makes it difficult to use ordinary earphones, and CC is…

The first report of the buckled thyroid cartilage in a human cadaver.

We present the first case of buckled thyroid cartilage identified in a human cadaver. This rare anatomical variant, in patients, often produces dysphonia and is a potential source for diagnostic confusion. In the cadaveric case described, the laryngeal prominence is deviated to the left without deviation of the internal structures of the larynx, such as vocal folds and vocalis muscles. The medical history of the patient is not known. Finally, a review of current literature on the buckled thyroid cartilage is presented. Such a case represents a rare opportunity to visualize this deformity via a…

Spatial and chronological localization of septoclasts in the mouse Meckel's cartilage.

Meckel's cartilage (MC) in the first branchial arch of mammals is a transient structure that disappears before birth, except for the most anterior and posterior portions. Recent studies reported that some congenital abnormalities in craniofacial regions are linked with the persistence or dysplasia of MC. However, the mechanisms underlying the resorption of MC have not been elucidated. Cartilage resorption in endochondral ossification is performed by multinuclear osteoclasts/chondroclasts as well as mononuclear septoclasts, which were newly added to the list of cartilage phagocytes. Septoclasts…

A cartilage-forming tumor of the mandibular angle: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Mandible can be the site of benign or malignant lesions of different origins, including odontogenic and non-odontogenic lesions. Cartilage-forming tumors have been rarely reported at this site. Chondrosarcoma is a rare malignant cartilage-producing neoplasm that is extremely rare in the mandible. The rarity of cartilage-forming tumor occurrence in the mandible can make diagnosis difficult for pathologists, as they do not expect this type of tumor at this anatomical site. Here we report a case of chondrosarcoma of mandibular angle. CASE PRESENTATION: A 70-year-old Moroccan male pat…

Minimum design requirements for a poroelastic mimic of articular cartilage.

The exceptional functional performance of articular cartilage (load-bearing and lubrication) is attributed to its poroelastic structure and resulting interstitial fluid pressure. Despite this, there remains no engineered cartilage repair material capable of achieving physiologically relevant poroelasticity. In this work we develop in silico models to guide the design approach for poroelastic mimics of articular cartilage. We implement the constitutive models in FEBio, a PDE solver for multiphasic mechanics problems in biological and soft materials. We investigate the influence of strain rate, …

Novel advances in strategies and applications of artificial articular cartilage.

Artificial articular cartilage (AC) is extensively applied in the repair and regeneration of cartilage which lacks self-regeneration capacity because of its avascular and low-cellularity nature. With advances in tissue engineering, bioengineering techniques for artificial AC construction have been increasing and maturing gradually. In this review, we elaborated on the advances of biological scaffold technologies in artificial AC including freeze-drying, electrospinning, 3D bioprinting and decellularized, and scaffold-free methods such as self-assembly and cell sheet. In the following, several …
