BACKGROUND: In this report, we describe the clinical, macro-, and microscopic findings of a newborn zebra victim of a fatal trauma and its possible causes are discussed in detail.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A plains zebra (Equus quagga) born in a Portuguese zoo was found in hypothermia and unable to get up. The animal was admitted to the hospital 36 hours later and, after the first hour of treatment and no attempts to get up, it began to convulse and died. At necropsy, subdural hematoma and atlantoaxial dislocation were the main findings.
CONCLUSION: The inability to pinpoint the exact moment of the

The human cervical spine is a unique structure that differs dramatically from the thoracic and lumbar spine. The main differences concern the topographic anatomy of the spinal cord, anatomy and physiology of the occipito-atlanto-axial joint complex, the close course of the vertebral artery to the cervical spine and the very close relationship of the esophagus, vessels, peripheral and cranial nerves to the spine. To avoid serious complications during surgical treatment of spondylodiscitis within the cervical spine, these aspects must be kept in mind. They will be explained in detail in this art

PURPOSE: Vertebral segmentation and fusion failures are quite common and often occur as incidental findings. These anatomical variants may be associated with deformity and lead to pain and other neurological signs. They are less frequent in the cervical spine. We report three cases of rare posterior arch segmentation failure at the cervical spine and cervicothoracic junction, with an interesting pattern of laminar arrangement.
METHODS: The clinical and radiological findings of three patients with unusual anatomical variants of the posterior elements of the subaxial cervical spine and cervicot

The clinical outcomes in 112 dogs weighing less than 35 pounds that were presented with cervical intervertebral disk protrusions were retrospectively evaluated. Although the second to third cervical (C2 to C3) intervertebral space was the most common site (27%) of disk protrusion, 57% of disk protrusions presented were caudal to the fourth cervical (C4) vertebra. Dogs with cranial intervertebral disk protrusions, including the C2 to C3 and C3 to C4 intervertebral disk spaces, responded favorably to ventral slot decompression. By comparison, caudal intervertebral disk protrusions (within the C4

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this scoping review is to systematically map the extent and nature of the literature on the use of imaging for assessing cervicothoracic junction anatomical variation in patients with neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome.
INTRODUCTION: Neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome is a complex, disputed diagnosis that lacks a definitive gold-standard test, despite being the most common thoracic outlet syndrome subtype. Imaging is essential for identifying anatomical variations, such as cervical ribs, and excluding competing diagnoses. This review aims to clarify how imaging m

Spondylo-megaepiphyseal-metaphyseal dysplasia (SMMD; OMIM 613330) is a dysostosis/dysplasia caused by recessive mutations in the homeobox-co … of multiple pseudoepiphyses at all metacarpals and phalanges. Reduced or absent ossification of the cervical vertebrae leads to cervical instability with anterior or posterior kinking of the cervical spine (swan neck-like deformity, kyknodysostosis). As a result of the cervical spine instability or deformation, five of six patients in our series suffered cervical co …

Cervical myelomeningocele (MMC) is an uncommon congenital malformation of the spinal cord and accounts for a small proportion of neural tube … D CT reconstruction of the cervical spine clearly demonstrated contiguous fusions of multiple lower-cervical vertebrae and neural arches, which was consistent with Type III Klippel-Feil syndrome. The patient was advised to undergo operative treatment to prevent the progression of her neurological deficit. However, after being notified of the potential neurological r …

Patients requiring lumbar punctures (LPs) are frequently challenging or may be impossible to do through a standard lower lumbar route. Therefore, if clinically indicated, consideration of alternative anatomic access routes to the spinal subarachnoid space may be necessary. However, some of these approaches are unpopular or seldom used, may be challenging to perform, or are associated with potential significant complications especially when combined with limited operator experience. Here we review the techniques and drawbacks of multiple different approaches for percutaneous insertion of spinal
