Chlamydia trachomatis infections--a major concern for reproductive health. Where do we stand regarding epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis and therapy?

The current article deals with the problem of distinguishing between relapse and reinfection of genital chlamydial infections due to the chronic character of such infections. The problem of detecting and treating chlamydial pelvic inflammatory disease is considered. Factors that may affect the clinical presentation of such infections, such as hormonal therapy, are also highlighted. Observations on novel manifestations of Chlamydia trachomatis infections, such as spontaneous abortion, prematurity and intrauterine infections as well as a statistical correlation of a certain serovar to cervical c

The influence of sexual and social factors on the risk of Chlamydia trachomatis infections: a population-based serologic study.

BACKGROUND: Genital chlamydia infections often are asymptomatic, which promotes their spread in the population. In women, the possible consequences of infection are pelvic inflammatory disease and infertility. Most studies on the prevalence of Chlamydia trachomatis have been based on clinical series, and prevalences tend to vary with the clinical setting. Few seroepidemiologic studies have emerged from industrialized countries. GOAL OF THIS STUDY: To assess the prevalence of Chlamydia trachomatis using culture and serology, and its relationship with possible risk factors. STUDY DESIGN: This …

Chlamydia trachomatis genitourinary infections: laboratory diagnosis and therapeutic aspects. Evaluation of in vitro and in vivo effectiveness of azithromycin.

Chlamydia trachomatis (C.t.) cell culture represents a sensitive method for the diagnosis of chlamydial infection and the only one which makes it possible to determine the susceptibility of an isolate to antibiotics so that an appropriate drug can be selected for individual treatment. In 11 patients, affected by urethroprostatitis and suspected of treatment failure with standard drug regimens, either due to lack of compliance with therapy or antibiotic resistance, C.t. was isolated in McCoy cell culture from urethral swabs, after prostatic massage. The in vitro activity of azithromycin against

The differentiation of Chlamydia species by antigen detection in sputum specimens from patients with community-acquired acute respiratory infections.

An amplified enzyme immunoassay (IDEIA III: Dako Diagnostics Ltd) for detecting genus-specific chlamydia antigen was evaluated prospectively on 286 respiratory specimens from 275 patients presenting with community-acquired pneumonia or persistent chest infection. Nineteen patients had evidence of recent chlamydial infection, having two or more positive sputum or serological markers. Sputa from two other patients were ELISA-positive in the absence of other positive criteria and were regarded as false-positive results. When compared with a direct immunofluorescence test for chlamydial elementary

Cytologic manifestations of cervical and vaginal infections. II. Confirmation of Chlamydia trachomatis infection by direct immunofluorescence using monoclonal antibodies.

We found inflammatory patterns of transparent lymphocytes on increased numbers of histiocytes suggestive of chlamydial infection in 68 (56%) of 121 cervical cytologic smears. Chlamydia trachomatis was isolated from 36 (53%) of those with and only two (4%) of those without such inflammatory patterns. Direct stain with fluorescein-conjugated monoclonal antibodies demonstrated elementary bodies of C trachomatis in 30 (79%) of the 38 culture-positive patients, including 29 of the culture-positive patients who had an inflammatory cytologic pattern suggestive of C trachomatis infection. Thus, Papani

Erythromycin against Chlamydia trachomatis infections. A double blind study comparing 4- and 7-day treatment in men and women.

In a double-blind controlled study the treatment of erythromycin 500 mg twice daily for seven days was compared with erythromycin 500 mg twice daily for four days in 73 men and women with uncomplicated genito-urinary chlamydia trachomatis infections. At the start of the treatment, 34 of 42 men (81%) and 15 of 31 women (48%) had symptoms suggesting the presence of chlamydial infections. There was a significantly higher bacteriological cure rate with the seven-days treatment in both men and women compared with the four days treatment at the second control visit two weeks after the start of the t

Measurement of IgG antibodies to Chlamydia trachomatis by commercial enzyme immunoassays and immunofluorescence in sera from pregnant women and patients with infertility, pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy, and laboratory diagnosed Chlamydia psittaci/Chlamydia pneumoniae infection.

BACKGROUND: Screening for Chlamydia trachomatis specific antibodies is valuable in diagnosing asymptomatic pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and tubal damage following repeated episodes of PID. The assays in current use are unsuitable for screening large numbers of samples so there is a need to develop more suitable assays. AIMS: To compare the performance of several commercial C trachomatis enzyme immunoassays (EIAs) (SeroCT, C tracho(pep), Medac p-EIA, Vircell and Labsystems C trachomatis IgG EIAs) using major outer membrane protein (MOMP), an inactivated organism EIA (Genzyme Virotech EIA)

Effectiveness of Omadacycline in a Patient with Chlamydia psittaci and KPC-Producing Gram-Negative Bacteria Infection.

Chlamydia psittaci is one of the primary pathogens responsible for community-acquired atypical pneumonia. If not treated promptly, it can progress to severe pneumonia and may lead to multiple organ dysfunction as well as secondary infections with multi-drug-resistant (MDR) bacteria. Omadacycline, a novel aminomethylcycline antibiotic derived from tetracycline, exhibits high activity against various bacterial strains. This case report describes a patient who developed severe pneumonia caused by Chlamydia psittaci in conjunction with a MDR bacterial infection. Despite initial treatment with moxi

Development and Validation of Chlamydia muridarum Mouse Models for Studying Genital Tract Infection Pathogenesis.

Animal infection models play significant roles in the study of bacterial pathogenic mechanisms and host-pathogen interactions, as well as in evaluating drug and vaccine efficacies. Chlamydia trachomatis is responsible for infections in various mucosal tissues, including the eyes and urogenital, respiratory, and gastrointestinal tracts. Chronic infections can result in severe consequences such as trachoma-induced blindness, ectopic pregnancy, and infertility. While intravaginal inoculation of C. muridarum mimics the natural route of sexual transmission between individuals, transcervical inocula

CpoS-Inc interactions facilitate host cell modulation during Chlamydia trachomatis infection.

Chlamydia trachomatis (C.t.), the leading bacterial cause of sexually transmitted infections, replicates within a unique intracellular compartment called the inclusion, which is modified by secreted proteins known as inclusion membrane (Inc) proteins. Here, we further characterize CpoS, an Inc protein previously shown to be critical for bacterial replication and inclusion development. We demonstrate that CpoS directly binds multiple coiled-coil region-containing Incs and engages Rab GTPases at a separate site. Notably, CpoS-InaC interactions facilitate the recruitment of select Arf GTPases to

Expression activation of over 70% of Chlamydia trachomatis genes during the first hour of infection.

The obligate intracellular bacterium Chlamydia has a unique developmental cycle that alternates between two contrasting cell types. With a hardy envelope and highly condensed genome, the small elementary body (EB) maintains limited metabolic activities yet survives in extracellular environments and is infectious. After entering host cells, EBs differentiate into larger and proliferating reticulate bodies (RBs). Progeny EBs are derived from RBs in late developmental stages and eventually exit host cells. How expression of the chlamydial genome consisting of nearly 1,000 genes governs the chlamy

Epidemiology, Transmission Mode, and Pathogenesis of Chlamydia pecorum Infection in Koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus): An Overview.

Chlamydial infections pose a significant threat to koala populations. Chlamydia pecorum (C. pecorum) remains the major chlamydial species affecting koala health, both in the wild and in captivity, and chlamydial infections are considered important factors affecting the long-term survival of koalas. A clear understanding of chlamydial infections, including the epidemiology, transmission mode, pathogenesis, immune response, control, and prevention thereof, is essential for improving the management of chlamydial infections in koalas. In this study, we discuss the important advances made in our un

Peritonitis After Endometrial Cytology in a Woman With Hydrosalpinx Caused by Chronic Chlamydia trachomatis Infection.

Some women infected with Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) are asymptomatic, while others experience lower abdominal discomfort when the inflammatory process extends to the fallopian tubes. Without treatment, salpingitis can progress to pelvic peritonitis and subsequently, peritonitis in the upper abdomen, a condition known as Fitz-Hugh-Curtis syndrome, in some cases. A nucleic acid amplification assay is required for diagnosing CT infection. However, this assay may yield a negative result even in the presence of CT infection. This report presents a case of a 45-year-old woman with a history of hydro

Combination of compound screening with an animal model identifies pentamidine to prevent Chlamydia trachomatis infection.

Chlamydia trachomatis (Ct) is the most common cause for bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs) worldwide with a tremendous impact on public health. With the aim to unravel novel targets of the chlamydia life cycle, we screen a compound library and identify 28 agents to significantly reduce Ct growth. The known anti-infective agent pentamidine-one of the top candidates of the screen-shows anti-chlamydia activity in low concentrations by changing the metabolism of host cells impairing chlamydia growth. Furthermore, it effectively decreases the Ct burden upon local or systemic applicati

Chlamydia Infection Remodels Host Cell Mitochondria to Alter Energy Metabolism and Subvert Apoptosis.

Chlamydia infection represents an important cause for concern for public health worldwide. Chlamydial infection of the genital tract in females is mostly asymptomatic at the early stage, often manifesting as mucopurulent cervicitis, urethritis, and salpingitis at the later stage; it has been associated with female infertility, spontaneous abortion, ectopic pregnancy, and cervical cancer. As an obligate intracellular bacterium, Chlamydia depends heavily on host cells for nutrient acquisition, energy production, and cell propagation. The current review discusses various strategies utilized by Ch

Инфекция хламидии муридарума вызывает бронхоинтерстициальную пневмонию у мышей NOD.Cg-PrkdccidIl2rgtm1Wjl/SzJ (NSG).
