Losses of hydrogen used as a transportation fuel could exceed 10% from vehicles and their refueling stations. These emissions erode greenhouse gas benefits because atmospheric hydrogen itself contributes to climate change. Losses at this level are also an economic concern and exacerbate upstream environmental impacts from hydrogen production. We reviewed the literature for estimates of hydrogen emissions within the "pump to wheels" (PTW) boundaries for present day technology. Additional insight was gained from methane emissions from natural gas transportation, a similar but more mature topic.

Black carbon is an underappreciated compound agricultural stressor that simultaneously disrupts plant physiology, agroecosystem functioning, andcrop productivity, highlighting the need for realistic exposure assessment and integrated strategies for climate-resilient agriculture. Black carbon (BC), a carbonaceous particulate generated through the incomplete combustion of fossil fuels, biomass, and biofuels, is recognized as a major short-lived climate pollutant with significant implications for atmospheric processes and agricultural sustainability. Unlike engineered biochar, atmospheric BC acts

The outlook for biobased plastics in packaging applications is increasingly promising, driven by a combination of environmental advantages, technological innovation, and shifting market dynamics. Derived from renewable biological resources, these materials offer compelling benefits over conventional fossil-based plastics. They can substantially reduce greenhouse gas emissions, are often recyclable or biodegradable, and, in some cases, require less energy to produce. These characteristics position biobased plastics as a key solution to urgent environmental challenges, particularly those related

Saltwater intrusion and sea level rise (SWISLR) threaten coastal agroecosystems, yet their impact on the methanogenic food web in rice paddies remains virtually unknown. Using "double-RNA" metatranscriptomics (rRNA, mRNA), we investigated salinity effects on the methanogenic community in straw-amended slurries following different preincubation periods. Our results demonstrate that salt stress significantly inhibits methane (CH4) production, with the degree of inhibition varying by the community's successional stage. Salinity fundamentally shifted the methanogenic food web toward Clostridiaceae

In the context of global decline in old-growth forest, historical ecology is a valuable tool to derive insights into vegetation legacies and dynamics and develop new conservation and restoration strategies. In this cross-disciplinary study, we integrate palynology (Lago del Pesce record), history, dendrochronology, and historical and contemporary land cover maps to assess drivers of vegetation change over the last millennium in a Mediterranean mountain forest (Pollino National Park, southern Italy) and discuss implications in conservation ecology. The study site hosts a remnant beech-fir (Fagu

BACKGROUND: Violence in British psychiatric hospitals appears to be escalating, with nursing staff the most frequent victims of assault. There is also public concern about violence on the part of individuals with mental health problems. In this climate, assessing a patient's risk of violent behaviour has become an important part of mental health care. However, little research has been published into how mental health nurses undertake such assessments in their day-to-day clinical practice.
AIM: The study focused on how mental health nurses make assessments of risk in clinical crisis situations

Growing up in the aftermath of armed conflict puts youth at a higher risk for psychopathology-particularly in societies like Northern Ireland which continue to be characterized by intergroup tension and cyclical violence. This risk may be heightened during adolescence, when youth are beginning to explore their identities and are becoming more aware of intergroup dynamics in both their immediate communities and the broader society. It is also during this stage when youth increasingly witness or engage in antisocial behavior and sectarian activities. A series of studies in Belfast conducted by C

The COVID-19 pandemic and intensifying climate-related disasters have highlighted the necessity of integrating psychosocial health and disaster risk management strategies. In the post-pandemic context, it is important to understand the psychosocial vulnerability factors that exacerbate stress and depression in order to inform interventions that enhance resilience during disaster preparedness and recovery efforts. Self-reported stress and depression were evaluated to assess risk and protective factors using questionnaires that were completed by 340 out of 446 participants in Durán, Ecuador in 2

UNLABELLED: Amidst global climate change, the escalating atmospheric CO2 levels have intensified ocean acidification (OA), significantly impacting the structure and function of marine ecosystems. Seagrass beds, representative nearshore ecosystems, play a pivotal role in carbon sequestration, biodiversity preservation, and nearshore environmental equilibrium. Rhizosphere microorganisms within seagrass beds, essential components of the ecosystem, drive material cycling and energy flow. Their community structure and functions demonstrate heightened sensitivity to environmental variations. While p

BACKGROUND: Prolonged farrowing duration is currently one of the challenges in the swine industry, which leads to postpartum complications by increasing uterine inflammation, and interference with physiological processes after parturition. The aim of the present study was to assess the relationship between uterine involution and uterine vessel size with farrowing duration in temporarily confined sows (during the day of farrowing and for the following 3 days) under tropical climates.
RESULTS: Fourteen Landrace × Yorkshire sows were included in the study. Uterine diameter and uterine vessel siz

Rubber (Hevea brasiliensis) is a perennial plant crop grown in many parts of Africa, South East Asia, and South America, especially within the hot and humid climatic regions. Rubber seed, either as feed or food, is a useful raw material to produce edible oil and protein. Despite the huge quantity of rubber seeds produced in Nigeria and its potential as a protein source, rubber seeds still appear neglected and under-utilised as feed/food given its perception as inedible and toxic due to the high concentration of cyanogenic glycoside. Therefore, the quest for effective processing technique(s) th

The Western Ghats of India support a diverse assemblage of Ixodid ticks, including multiple vectors of Kyasanur Forest Disease (KFD), yet comprehensive data from forest-fringe landscapes outside recognised outbreak zones remain limited. To address this gap, we undertook a multi-state, cross-sectional survey across 44 forest-fringe villages distributed within seven ecological grids spanning Goa, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu during peak nymphal activity (December–February). Standardized flagging method yielded 10,350 ticks representing 24 taxa across four genera, including 12 r

The use of beneficial bacterial strains is proposed as a nature based practice to support sustainable crop production. Strains exposed to extreme environmental stress may have developed robust stress resistance and the capacity to enhance plant growth under unfavorable conditions. Our study provides the new aspect in characterising bacteria from polluted soil. The novelty of our study was isolation of bacteria from a long-term contaminated site and their testing for plant growth promoting mechanisms. The aim of this research was to characterize bacterial strains, collected from the root zone o

The Barki sheep industry is becoming increasingly important in Egypt because of the high quality of their meat and wool. This sheep breed is also commonly known for its resistance to arid and harsh environmental conditions. Such characteristics can be exploited in solving the problematic situation of inadequate animal protein for human consumption, particularly under climatic changes. However, very few studies have investigated aspects of breeding, nutrition, and susceptibility to infectious or non-infectious diseases in Barki sheep. Herein, we propose to unravel the differences in the clinica

The knowledge that the freezing process can accelerate certain chemical reactions has been available since the 1960s, particularly in relation to the food industry. However, investigations into such effects on environmentally relevant reactions have only been carried out since the late 1980s. Some 20 years later, the field has matured and scientists have conducted research into various important processes such as the oxidation of nitrite ions to nitrates, sulfites to sulfates, and elemental mercury to inorganic mercury. Field observations mainly carried out in the polar regions have driven thi
