Genetic analysis of the Trichuris muris-induced model of colitis reveals QTL overlap and a novel gene cluster for establishing colonic inflammation.

BACKGROUND: Genetic susceptibility to colonic inflammation is poorly defined at the gene level. Although Genome Wide Association studies (GWAS) have identified loci in the human genome which confer susceptibility to Inflammatory Bowel Disease (Crohn's and Ulcerative Colitis), it is not clear if precise loci exist which confer susceptibility to inflammation at specific locations within the gut e.g. small versus large intestine. Susceptibility loci for colitis in particular have been defined in the mouse, although specific candidate genes have not been identified to date. We have previously show

Genome-wide analysis of hydrogen peroxide-regulated gene expression in Arabidopsis reveals a high light-induced transcriptional cluster involved in anthocyanin biosynthesis.

In plants, reactive oxygen species and, more particularly, hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)) play a dual role as toxic by-products of normal cell metabolism and as regulatory molecules in stress perception and signal transduction. Peroxisomal catalases are an important sink for photorespiratory H(2)O(2). Using ATH1 Affymetrix microarrays, expression profiles were compared between control and catalase-deficient Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) plants. Reduced catalase levels already provoked differences in nuclear gene expression under ambient growth conditions, and these effects were amplified by

[The occurrence of Echinococcus multilocularis in red foxes in lower Saxony: identification of a high risk area by spatial epidemiological cluster analysis].

There is considerable interest in the spatial distribution of Echinococcus multilocularis in red foxes (Vulpes vulpes L.), because this parasite causes the zoonoses of alveolar echinococcosis which is potentially of high fatality rate. High risk areas are known from France, Switzerland and the Swabian Alb in Germany for a long time. In this work, the spatial scan statistic is introduced as an instrument for identification and localisation of high risk areas, so called disease clusters in spatial epidemiology. The use of the spatial scan statistic along with data about the distribution of the p

Expression of p34(cdc2) and cyclins A and B compared to other proliferative features of non-Hodgkin's lymphomas: a multivariate cluster analysis.

In view of recent knowledge on proteins regulating the cell cycle, we re-evaluated proliferative features of 98 diffusely growing non-Hodgkin's lymphomas. The combined use of 5 proliferation-associated variables (mitotic indices and percentages of Ki-67(+), p34(cdc2+), cyclin A(+) and cyclin B(+) cells) and their entry into a multivariate cluster analysis separated, without overlaps, the entire cohort into 3 groups (clusters) with (1) low, (2) intermediate and (3) high proliferative activity. Conversely, bivariate plots exposed considerable cluster overlaps. Multivariate stepwise discriminant …

[Subgroups of torticollis spasmodicus from the psychosomatic viewpoint. Results of a cluster analysis of 144 cases. German Study Group of Dystonia Research].

The question of subgroups in idiopathic spasmodic torticollis, which has been discussed in earlier studies in order to define etiologically heterogeneous patient populations has lost some of its relevance since with the injection of botulinum toxin an effective treatment is available. However, psychosocial distress is linked with spasmodic torticollis in a substantial number of patients. In order to define criteria for psychosocial interventions in addition to the treatment with botulinum toxin, a cluster analysis was carried out to identify high-risk populations in terms of psychological and …

Identification of novel RNA polymerase III promoters in bovine leukemia virus miRNA cluster by cross-taxa analysis of small non-coding RNAs.

BACKGROUND: Bovine leukemia virus (BLV) is an oncogenic deltaretrovirus that induces enzootic bovine leukosis. A defining feature of BLV is its viral miRNA cluster, which is transcribed atypically by RNA polymerase III via internal type 2 promoters rather than through the canonical Pol II pathway. These miRNAs accumulate to high levels within infected lymphocytes and can alter expression of a variety of host genes involved in lymphocyte proliferation and impose leukemogenic processes. RESULTS: Here, we present a comprehensive in silico characterization of new A-box and B-box promoter motifs w

Interactions between patterns of multimorbidity and functional status among hospitalized older patients: a novel approach using cluster analysis and association rule mining.

BACKGROUND: Multimorbidity (MM) is generally defined as the presence of 2 or more chronic diseases in the same patient and seems to be frequently associated with frailty and poor quality of life. However, the complex interplay between MM and functional status in hospitalized older patients has not been fully elucidated so far. Here, we implemented a 2-step approach, combining cluster analysis and association rule mining to explore how patterns of MM and disease associations change as a function of disability. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 3366 hospitalized older patients d…
