The cognitive anchor system: a structural model of self, task selection, and latent intention in human cognition.

INTRODUCTION: Human cognition requires both stability and flexibility: individuals maintain a continuous sense of self while shifting among tasks, intentions, and contexts. Existing theories explain information processing, prediction, attention, and control, but they leave under-specified the structural layer that determines what cognition is currently organized around. METHODS: This theoretical paper develops the Cognitive Anchor System, a structural framework that distinguishes among the self anchor, the task anchor, and the anchor pool. The model is compared with major theories of attentio

Dataset on neuropsychological profile and microbiota composition in cognitively unimpaired elderly and Alzheimer's patients.

This article presents data collected from a total of 50 older adults (25 healthy controls and 25 diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease). Among the assessments performed in this sample was a comprehensive neurocognitive screening: including working memory, cognitive flexibility, perception, attention, motor coordination, inhibitory control, verbal fluency and visuo-spatial skills. The data presented also include analysis of the participants' gut microbiota using the shot gun approach in faecal samples. Finally, evaluations of the emotional state, level of functioning and adherence to the Mediterra…

Cognitive and subjective effects of psilocybin microdosing: Results from two double-blind placebo-controlled longitudinal trials.

OBJECTIVE: Microdosing psychedelics has been widely reported to enhance focus and problem-solving, sparking interest in its potential to tre … d to placebo. While some initial effects were observed in social cognition, mood, and self-reported cognitive flexibility, these did not remain significant after correcting for multiple comparisons. Regardless of condition, participants predominantly reported their subjective experiences as positive yet negative bodily feelings were enhanced in the active condition. No …

Prenatal alcohol exposure and cognition at midlife: Evidence of fluid cognition deficits in two cohorts.

Here we evaluate the cognitive abilities of … res also exhibited specific deficits in their performance on measures of inhibition, attention, and cognitive flexibility. Thus, PAE is associated with ongoing cognitive deficits in middle adulthood, which can be observed most clearly among individuals with dysmorphic features.

Chronic Intermittent Ethanol Exposure Alters Behavioral Flexibility in Aged Rats Compared to Adult Rats and Modifies Protein and Protein Pathways Related to Alzheimer's Disease.

Repeated excessive alcohol consumption increases the risk of developing cognitive decline and dementia. Hazardous drinking among older adults further increases such vulnerabilities. To investigate whether alcohol induces cognitive deficits in older adults, we performed a chronic intermittent ethanol exposure paradigm (ethanol or water gavage every other day 10 times) in 8-week-old young adult and 70-week-old aged rats. While spatial memory retrieval ascertained by probe trials in the Morris water maze was not significantly different between ethanol-treated and water-treated rats in both age gr

Relationship between executive functions and academic performance among Moroccan middle school students.

UNLABELLED: Executive functions (EF) play a central role in the development of social and cognitive skills and academic learning. OBJECTIVE … atio was balanced. The students with learning difficulties had lower performance on tests measuring cognitive flexibility, inhibitory processes and working memory compared to the control group. CONCLUSION: From these results, it can be concluded that students with learning disabilities performed poorly on the three basic components of executive functions. Therefore, t …

Photobiomodulation improves the frontal cognitive function of older adults.

OBJECTIVES: The frontal lobe hypothesis of age-related cognitive decline suggests that the deterioration of the prefrontal cortical regions that occurs with aging leads to executive function deficits. Photobiomodulation (PBM) is a newly developed, noninvasive technique for enhancing brain function, which has shown promising effects on cognitive function in both animals and humans. This randomized, sham-controlled study sought to examine the effects of PBM on the frontal brain function of older adults. METHODS/DESIGNS: Thirty older adults without a neuropsychiatric history performed cognitive

Probing the Cognitive Mechanism of Mental Representational Change During Chunk Decomposition: A Parametric fMRI Study.

Chunk decomposition plays an important role in cognitive flexibility in particular with regards to representational change, which is critical for insight problem solving and creative thinking. In this study, we investigated the cognitive mechanism of decomposing Chinese character chunks through a parametric fMRI design. Our results from this parametric manipulation revealed widely distributed activations in frontal, parietal, and occipital cortex and negative activations in parietal and visual areas in response to chunk tightness during decomposition. To mentally manipulate the element of a gi…

Assessing mental flexibility: neuroanatomical and neuropsychological correlates of the Trail Making Test in elderly people.

The Trail Making Test part B (TMT-B) is highly sensitive to age-related changes in the brain and cognitive function. However, the precise contribution of periventricular hyperintensities (PVH), deep white matter hyperintensities (DWMH), and medial temporal lobe atrophy (MTA) to task performance remains unspecified. Similarly, diminished performance may be due to deficient flexibility functions, but also to other age-related cognitive decline (e.g., mental slowing). The aim of the present study was to determine neuroanatomical (PVH, DWMH, MTA) and neuropsychological (working memory, executive f

The Effect of Aerobic or Strength Training in Elderly with Cognitive Decline: The Fit4Alz Project.

This study aimed to examine the effects of aerobic and strength training methodologies, either combined with or without cognitive training, on mitigating cognitive decline. A total of 154 subjects were recruited (72.8 ± 6.1 years, 69% females) and were divided into four groups: i) strength plus cognitive training (STCT, n = 56); ii) strength training (ST, n = 23); iii) aerobic training (AT, n = 41); and iv) aerobic plus cognitive training (ATCT, n = 34). Subjects were previously cognitively assessed and showed cognitive decline (less than 26 points on the Montreal Cognitive Assessment, MoCA).

Understanding psychological adjustment in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and their caregivers: a scoping review.

OBJECTIVE: Psychological adjustment is a major focus in the care of people with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and their caregivers, given its critical role in maintaining quality of life (QoL). This scoping review aimed to gain a better understanding of ALS patients' and caregivers' psychological adjustment, to inform future care and research. METHODS: PubMed, Web of Science, PsycINFO, Embase and CINAHL were searched for peer-reviewed studies reporting associations of psychological factors with patient/caregiver QoL. Psychological factors were categorized by type (cognitive, emotional o

Effects of Moderate and Regular Exercise on Improving Neurocognition and Preventing Neurodegenerative Diseases in the Elderly.

This study evaluated the effects of regular moderate-intensity exercise on neurocognitive function in older adults. 120 eligible elderly participants were randomly assigned to either an exercise intervention group or a control group. The intervention group underwent a 12-week structured, multicomponent moderate-intensity exercise program, incorporating aerobic, resistance, flexibility, and balance training. Six composite indices were developed: the Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF)-mediated Hippocampal Plasticity Index (BHPI), the Exercise-Induced Neuroinflammation-Oxidative Stress Inde
